magicbuzz··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking Freelancer? (December 2019)
SEEKING WORK | New Zealand | Remote Senior Front-End Engineer

I build solid web applications. I've been a front-end lead and I've shipped products that have later been sold to other companies. My portfolio includes onboarding flows, dashboards, large multipage data captures, web mapping apps, visualizations, Shopify (Polaris React) plugins, amongst others. I'm not a designer but I have UI/UX sensibilities (color impact, eye levels, etc.). My JS experience goes back to 2014 when I wrote a JS FTP/SFTP plugin for Atom and I create in modern, functional ES6+. My CSS knowledge is near encyclopaedic.

Technologies I've worked with: ES6+, React, Redux, NodeJS, GraphQL(Apollo), REST, D3.js, Material-UI, Leaflet, Vue.js, Postgres, SVG, Linux, NGINX, Lua, Python (pre-2016 FTE Python dev), Redux-saga, Express, Webpack, git, Netlify, Firebase, GAE, AWS, Docker, Three.js to name a few. Also interested in pure functional langauges: F#, OCaml

My timezone is 3 hrs after the west coast and 2 hrs before Sydney.

I love bringing interesting ideas to reality!

magicbuzz··on Ask HN: How can I become a different type of developer?
I was a full time Python dev but the complexity of the work required wasn’t interesting enough for me. I wanted to move into web dev. So in 2014 I sat down and wrote an FTP/SFTP client in 100% Javascript (a plug-in for an editor). It impressed enough people that I eventually moved into a web dev role. If you write something that seems involved/complex enough, people will credit you as being capable in that language.
magicbuzz··on Teaching Rats to Drive Tiny Cars
It’s a rat race :-b
magicbuzz··on Ask HN: Who's Looking for a Co-Founder?
Front end focused dev who is always interested in building interesting things. I built a geocoder (API->NLP->NodeJS->Postgres/PostGIS) and sold it earlier this year. Been working mostly on React/GraphQL incl mapping for US dev shop this year. My timezone is 4 hrs after US west coast.

magicbuzz··on A Code Glitch May Have Caused Errors in More Than a Hundred Published Studies
Most developers look at the result from a function call rather than looking at the documentation.
magicbuzz··on A Code Glitch May Have Caused Errors in More Than a Hundred Published Studies
IIRC glob.glob() is a wrapper around os.listdir(). I used to develop code on an OS X laptop then push to a Linux box for the actual computational result (big dataset). And discovered at one point that one OS returns a sorted result, the other does not. Sorting is important if you want track/analyse instrument data over the days in a year.
magicbuzz··on Uber Go Style Guide
Yes, it's great. I know a few folks working on Go backends - I'm going to point this out to them. And I think like you, it raises the question of 'Is there a guide like this for what I'm working in?'

In my early React years, I had a lot of conversations about good vs bad as we got used to working in a declarative component hierarchy rather than the old imperative (tweak that DOM!) way. I still come across projects where people write html + bootstrap translated into a render method rather than using the power that is components.

I'm posting in the Linux thread because it's probably annoying to some to see 'but I moved to Linux' threads throughout this comment.

But the original post is very sobering.

I left OS X a few years back when the new laptop came out. Partly the whole USB-C thing I suppose, but I felt that there was pretty good hardware around and the new MBP didn't really shine (and was fiercely expensive). So I made the move to Ubuntu on some new Lenovo hardware (Carbon X1).

I really look forward to the twice-yearly Ubuntu releases. More of the same, rarely any huge new surprises and just generally more polish. I upgraded to Ubuntu 19.10 immediately once the 19.10beta came out and it seems speedier.

I'm sorry to see Mac users get so badly burnt but I'm very glad I made the decision to leave when I did.

You should probably clarify that your codebase seems primarily PHP.
magicbuzz··on Hong Kong protest safety app banned from iOS store
The ‘1984’ ad should be re-edited so that the protestor running down the aisle with their hammer stops running when they realise that Apple disabled their hammer.
magicbuzz··on The curious economics of being ripped off on holiday
Agreed. It’s mostly a non-issue in Australia too because of the law (which includes airline tickets) - https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-surcharges-receipts...
magicbuzz··on Ask HN: How do you take care of your hands?
I spent a few weeks doing a long hike.. and found, to my surprise, my arms and back were much more flexible and some difficulty I had with stretching my left arm had completely gone. I think that just the movement of my arms while walking each day had been very beneficial.
magicbuzz··on American Phrase Book
Looks like a third of the country has watched that video. The others were all on smoko.

magicbuzz··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer
Veggie ipsum is great!
magicbuzz··on Japanese addressing system
Without smartphone was tough in Japan. But streetview was great. I’d put an address in, then look at each corner to ensure I knew what each turn looked like after arriving at the local station to get to the specific address.
magicbuzz··on Legacy of Australia’s National Broadband Network: How Not to Run Infra Projects
Over the years, the proposed build for my area went from fibre to wifi to satellite. Moved to New Zealand. At my new property, being offered a gigabit connection. AFAIK there’s nowhere on the NBN that supports that.
magicbuzz··on Bill Gates on making “one of the greatest mistakes of all time”
Interesting to contrast this with the current HN article link to the Washingtonian about Amazon choosing Virginia for the HQ2 location. That article references Moretti’s “The New Geography of Jobs” - companies now seek human capital rather than accumulating physical capital.
magicbuzz··on The State of CSS 2019
Doing metric print stylesheets.
magicbuzz··on Farmed salmon isn't naturally pink or red

There was a longer report I think the above article was based on. I recall watching the section where a low-level employee talked about adding the chemical that makes the flesh go pink. The reporter asked whether that was any concern. The response was “Well, doesn’t everything have chemicals in it these days?”

magicbuzz··on Preventing the Collapse of Civilization [video]
He obviously uses Windows for his anecdotal examples, but I don’t think you can point the finger at Windows specifically. I think it’s consistent throughout OSes. I see regressions in iOS since the earlier versions, as well as in Linux and the applications I use.

My IDE stopped providing menus. It’s open source so I just shrug and track the issue in Github.

magicbuzz··on Microsoft Launches React Native for Windows
As a long-time React dev, I booted Windows and started looking thru the "vnext" setup. But then took another look and saw this:

System Requirements: Visual Studio 2017

Oh. Well, sorry but I'm not going to drop my current IDE (i.e install and run a branch new IDE rather than my everyday tool I've customized greatly).

magicbuzz··on 500 days of Duolingo: What you can and can’t learn from a language app
Learning a language teaches you deeply about that culture and gives you perspectives on your own culture from the standpoint of another.
magicbuzz··on Changes to Models S and X allow them to travel longer without larger batteries
Actually they're quoting 660km on https://www.tesla.com/en_AU/models/design#battery
magicbuzz··on Changes to Models S and X allow them to travel longer without larger batteries
For metric folks, this equates to nearly 600km.

That's about as much as I want to drive in the space of a single day. Conceivably however, automated driving could mean doing longer distances. And at a cost much less than an airfare - just a lot more in time.

magicbuzz··on Changes to Models S and X allow them to travel longer without larger batteries
Which you can't actually buy. At least in Australia.
magicbuzz··on How Venice Works [video]
Yes. Great drawings/animations too that show a lot of thought and effort being put in. Cheers for the links.

Do you need a licence to operate a boat in Venice? Update - it appears you do and it's pretty tightly controlled.
