madsushi··on Threes: The Rip-offs and Making Our Original Game
I have been playing Threes for quite some time, so it came as a surprise to me when several commenters on HN assumed that 2048 was the original and Threes was the derivative.
madsushi··on Pending Comments Update
I like the idea of a hidden karma threshold, because it prevents any obvious attacks like "get to 50 karma and then approve bad comments".
madsushi··on The Meteoric Rise of DigitalOcean
I like DO for backup/secondary purposes, but until they allow more than 1 public IP per droplet (even for a fee!), I won't use them for any serious production.
madsushi··on DigitalOcean Raises $37.2M From Andreessen Horowitz to Take on AWS
* only have the option of 1 IP address per droplet (no plans to change)
madsushi··on Say Hello to Cortana, Microsoft’s Siri Equivalent
I can see it now.

"OK, Cortana, show me how to get to Mars."

madsushi··on Apple CarPlay
I think that making it an extension of an existing phone was a good choice. When I heard that Apple was planning some sort of device for cars, I was imagining how much of a pain it would be to update apps and keep things in sync with a device in the car. Sounds like it's essentially a second-screen for the iPhone (plus some built-in controls).
madsushi··on Harold Ramis dies aged 69
His character in Ghostbusters 2 was a tech role model for me too. The idea that science and engineering could solve practical problems was eye-opening as a kid.
madsushi··on College considers basing president’s salary off that of cleaning staff
Ben & Jerry's used to have a similar policy, except it was "no more than 5x". Lasted until they picked up a CEO that wanted more than $150k/yr.
madsushi··on Show HN: ThreesJS – iOS game Threes for the browser
This feels just like the real game. I am just missing the predictive/"test" move that lets you see what would happen without actually moving the tiles.

Bow in the presence of a great acquisition.

madsushi··on Ask HN: What are some alternatives to HN?
One more.
madsushi··on Show HN: RTFA, a Chrome extension to hide HN comments until you read the article
I agree. The order I use: read the comments, read the article, and THEN post a comment if I have something to add.
madsushi··on Dataset: Ten Years of NFL Plays Analyzed, Visualized, Quizzified
I like your username.
madsushi··on Ask HN: Best big companies to work for?
I'd look at NetApp. They're consistently listed as one of the top places to work (in the US and worldwide) and have a variety of software projects (hardware/firmware work to web management tools).
madsushi··on iPhone 5 with iOS 7 randomly shuts off
It's not that it randomly shuts off, it's that the batteries drain incredibly quickly and the battery % indicator becomes inaccurate. I often see my 5 go from 60% to 40% to 15% to off in less than 60 seconds. The Apple site ran diags on my phone and confirmed the battery had reached "failure" status, but without AppleCare, the warranty only lasts 1 year and the service is nearly $100.

The iPhone 5 is sort of a reverse antenna-gate: instead of realizing how badly made the phone was at launch, we didn't realize it until the iPhone 5S was out, and nobody cares if the "old" model has issues.

madsushi··on Taking PHP Seriously
Well, it doesn't support mysqli_, which is a very common family of functions, especially since mysql_ is being deprecated. But a lot of stuff does run, as long as it doesn't need mysqli_.
madsushi··on No more time limits on Spotify
The killer feature of Spotify over Rdio is the ability to sync and integrate your personal music collection. With Spotify, I can make playlists that combine their material with my own MP3s, and it all syncs seamlessly to my phone. Rdio locks you into their collection, while Spotify letse combine their collection with mine.
madsushi··on Despite excellent credit, it's still possible to be turned down for a mortgage
Banks have no obligation to lend someone money if they don't think they can repay. Loans aren't a privilege, or a right. The banks reserve the right to refuse anyone.
madsushi··on Must-have Django packages
Ableist is the word he was looking for.
madsushi··on More Than 300 Sharks In Australia Are Now On Twitter
They actually have car whistlers that you can attach to your hood that are supposed to deter wildlife.
madsushi··on Amazon’s holiday success and UPS’ holiday fail
These are the same people that were going to the mall on the 24th (pre-Amazon) and complaining that everything was out of stock.

We are nowhere near instantaneous transportation, so there will always be logistical delays. Planning your holiday purchasing around those delays is smart, assuming that 2-day shipping is always guaranteed and waiting until the last moment is playing with fire.

madsushi··on What are you building over the holidays?
I'm taking it easy and just rebuilding by Linode with 64-bit Ubuntu (instead of the 32-bit Ubuntu I picked years ago) so I can try out HHVM. HHVM seems interesting, but there's no 32-bit build, so I need to document and migrate to a new server instance.
madsushi··on A basic guide to when and how to deploy HTTPS
StartSSL will let you do a multi-domain wildcard cert for $75 for 2-years (with identity verification). You toss all of your root domains on a single cert as wildcards, and use it everywhere. Cert lasts for 2 years and can be updated at any time to add new wildcard domains to it. You could in theory get 4 years out of it by adding a domain on the last day if your identity verification 2-year cycle, which refreshes the 2 years on the cert.

I use this method and it is awesome. One big multi-domain wildcard cert for everything.

madsushi··on Bing is blank?
We found him: timthelion is the one person that actually uses Bing.
madsushi··on Spotify Examined: What Their Report Really Says
In addition to having most music everywhere, I find that the Spotify sync experience is amazing. I make playlists of Spotify songs and my personal MP3s, and Spotify syncs the entire playlist to my phone. The ability to mix Spotify content with my own content, and have it all synced easily, is what really sold me on the premium subscription.
madsushi··on Open-source blogging platform Ghost begins rolling out its fully-hosted service
I like the idea, but it was the Dashboard (and stats) on their landing page that sold me, and sadly that feature is not even in the build yet.
madsushi··on Show HN: Meet Sid, our Raspberry-Pi-powered office robot
I managed to hit 160. The reason 240 is the max score is that you only have enough time to get a maximum of 3 drops (2 is more likely) so you have to aim for the 80 with all 3 drops.
madsushi··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
Spotify premium lets you do this, including sync to mobile.
madsushi··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
I should've said "EVERYTHING.... that I like to listen to". There are definitely gaps.
madsushi··on Spotify Raises $250 Million, Valued Above $4 Billion
Spotify makes an amazing product. I went from spending hundreds a year on CDs and MP3s to just paying their subscription fee. It's like Netflix for music, except they actually have EVERYTHING you want and it's there the minute it comes out in stores.
