Looks more like a Google product.
mads··on Ask HN: What should be taught in high school?
That would have been super useful to me. I am not in America, but in the country, where I am staying, letters from the tax office is always a source of some sort of anxiety because I simply don't understand the numbers and the consequences of what they are writing to me.

Probably too late for me now. I hired an accountant a few years ago, but I would like to be on top of that stuff myself.

Funny how I can build complicated big data analysis tools, but when I am presented with a single page of tax numbers, I just shut down. I have often thought if there is some sort of medical term to describe this thing.

mads··on Hong Kong protest safety app banned from iOS store
Yeah, that was the last straw. No more Apple products for me.

I hope they will enjoy all their rich Chinese customers.

Am I the only one who finds the design with all those cameras unsettling in some weird way?
mads··on A Gambler Who Cracked the Horse-Racing Code (2018)
Completely agree. Made in China is not for me anymore.
mads··on Children of a Thailand tribe who see with clarity beneath the waves (2016)
I remember being able to see clearly under water, when I was a kid. I was however sure this was not a correct memory, but maybe it was anyway.

Grew up near the ocean and swam almost every day.

mads··on Why Good Developers Are Promoted into Unhappiness (2007)
I used to have the same idea about those small teams given autonomy to hack and get some clear objective done whatever it takes. I think a lot of corporate environments is really missing this option.

In my mind they were called "swat teams".

mads··on Major survey finds worms are rare or absent in 20% of fields in England
Might be it.. Ford Mondeo back then and an Opel Meriva today.
mads··on Major survey finds worms are rare or absent in 20% of fields in England
Around 1.5 hours today each direction, but I am commuting to a different country and have to cross a bridge.

Back then it was 1 hour or so - maybe a little less if traffic was good.

mads··on Major survey finds worms are rare or absent in 20% of fields in England
Also did anyone notice that they don’t clean off insects off their car as often as before? Just 10 years ago, when I used to commute 170km every day in my car, I would have to clean the windshield regularly. I think I cleaned it once the last year and I even travel further today...
mads··on Foxconn Expands Operations in India, Vietnam Amid Trade Tensions
Not the enterprise way, I know, but if they really really wanted those screws couldn't they just have gotten on an airplane and hand carried them back to the manufacturing site? Probably could fit into a standard luggage container.
mads··on An Estonian company developing unmanned weaponized ground vehicles
My Father was in Africa and in the middle east in the 50'ies and 60'ies. I remember him telling about how arabs would usually take off their boots and flee the scene in combat situations. I assumed he was joking, but maybe not...

mads··on "Sonic attack" may have been two ultrasonic signals accidentally interfering
Yes, the sound emitted from the soundbar during calibration was almost the same sound as in that video.
mads··on "Sonic attack" may have been two ultrasonic signals accidentally interfering
I had a Yamaha soundbar some years ago, which could be calibrated via a small microphone, that you would place in the location in the room, where you wanted the sound to be beamed. During calibration it would create some beeping and whooping sounds, I guess to learn about the room it was in and you could then sort of have a sound bubble in your sofa, when watching a movie late at night.
mads··on The world of Linux Handhelds in 2018
Building a phone isn't easy (obviously ;)). Been there myself and it may not even be due to incompetence from Purism's side. Your leverage as a small manufacturer with low quantities is just almost non-existing. Their main problem is probably not going to be on the software or hardware design and I think they can probably get a good working dev-kit out in Jun-2018 as they state. Their main challenge is probably going to be on the mechanical design, if they want to mass produce something that is on par with other phones out there quality wise.

I don't know anything about their team and their experience, but that Jan-2019 release date could shift quite a bit. Especially if they need custom tooling or non standard parts. 6 months will evaporate really really fast, when retooling or changes in material is involved.

I love the project though and I hope they succeed. I have been looking for something like this and I will surely buy one, if they can deliver.

mads··on Carve your own spoon (2014)
Am I weird because this sounds really appealing to me for some reason? Didn't do any wood work since sløjd in school :D
mads··on Ask HN: Best time series database currently
I recently built a system capable of handling this load, but is was based on MongoDB and thats not an option in this project because of hardware constraints.

Cassandra may be an option. I will look into it.

mads··on Ask HN: Traveling to China for the first time. Would love some advice
If you are not planning to spend time in countries, where VPN is required, then I would just buy a VPN service. Too much hastle with setting it up and the established providers are very good and easy to setup.

I will send you an email :)

mads··on Is Filecoin a $257 million Ponzi scheme? [pdf]
I agree, but those cars and the attention is just so tempting. And then in Thailand. Imagine kite surfing, drinks, anything you want for small cash. Hell, you could even contract someone to write that damn file system people are whining about.
mads··on Is Filecoin a $257 million Ponzi scheme? [pdf]
In the long run, I think driving Ferraris would get old much quicker than writing file systems, so yes, I tend to agreee, but in the short run, I doubt it.. Hell, park a Ferrari in my drive way and I would abandon my customers here for at least 3 days.. :D ... But thats just me..
mads··on Is Filecoin a $257 million Ponzi scheme? [pdf]
Heh.. Yes, probably is now.

I dont know if the founders started out to make a Ponzi, but once the dollars started rolling in, I can imagine, they probably got "different ideas".

Who am I to judge, but if I was a founder of this, I would be driving my Ferrari in Thailand instead of slaving away trying to build some stupid file system. Who the hell cares about file systems :P

mads··on Ask HN: Best time series database currently
Cool thanks. I will check it out.
mads··on Ask HN: Best time series database currently
My main concern for now is to be able to store/write the data collected from a million IoT devices in a scalable fashion, so there is not really a requirement for what to do with it other than, when the data is there it will be analyzed on an adhoc basis and then we will see what we can do with it.

I used Streisand for a while and I can confirm, that it works very well in China. VPN galore.
mads··on Ask HN: Traveling to China for the first time. Would love some advice
Been living in China for 4-5 years. Back home these days.

1) I used ExpressVPN while I was there and never really had a big problem. We also used the GSuite for our company. Once in a while I had to change the protocol or a different country to connect through. Just make sure you configure your laptop and phone before you arrive in China - otherwise it will be a pain to download the clients for your VPN. In emergency you should be able to connect with data services on your foreign SIM, but that will cost you of course.

2) See my answer for 4

3) Google Translate was always useless for me to communicate , so I had to learn Chinese in the end.. Back in those days nobody spoke English, but I would probably download the Pleco app and use that. It will not translate complete sentences, but you can translate single words and then show that, if you get stuck in a conversations. These days, many people will probably be able to communicate with you in simple English and especially young people will be very good in English because they grew up with American TV shows and movies. They even sound like Americans some of them because they really pay attention to the pronunciation of words due to the Chinese language being a tonal language, I guess.

4) I would go to Shenzhen, if I had the time. It is 3 hour plane trip from Shanghai, I think. Go take a look at the electronics market at HuaQiangBei and go have lunch or dinner in Shekou. In Shenzhen there are a lot of maker communities, you can go check out, if you do a bit of research before hand.

5) Dont give a green hat, 4 bottles of wine or a clock as a gift. Otherwise you should be fine :D .. Also toilet paper. And if you plan to make any Chinese acquaintances you should probably install WeChat. You can use it to pay for stuff also - its a pretty good app.

I might be in Shenzhen soon for some business in fact. If it fits, we can go have a coffee and check things out together. Let me know :)
