"Google has discovered that an incorrect result is better than no result at all when it comes to keeping people on their Websites and continue to generate ad revenue."
Big eyeroll here. Returning a probabilistic match is a nefarious plot for revenue. OK...
Somewhat off topic: what happened to Mini Microsoft? It seems like he/she was intercepted and lobotomized by Microsoft PR. The open threads with wonderful discussion (one of the best venues for talking across silos) habitually wither from neglect from Mini. What's the next best place?
I don't know why this article says that Microsoft was 5 years late to the web search party. Microsoft had a search engine in the late 90's, MSN Search.
Bad memories of writing CS assignments on overtaxed Sun workstations, with that crap WM. I fetishized those expensive purple boxes until I had to use one.
I've noticed that the attacks are quite vague and consist of demanding some sort of proof that PJ is not engaged this or that (e.g. eating babies.) Also, there's some ridiculous notion that she hides behind a pseudonym because she uses her initials as her nom de plume. See: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4014768 , you might want to select the page text so you can decipher the downvoted comments.
Twitter:
* single point of failure
* one namespace for all users (remember how much AOL sucked? xXAllNamesAreTaken1998Xx)
* the service is defined by its terse 140 character limits and the core use case would degrade if this was lifted.
Sounds like a load of FUD to me. DOM elements are DOM elements, aren't they? How would Chrome's JS interpreter be able to discriminate ad content from anything else?
One of those C64 books that goes from "how to plug in cables and switch the computer on" all the way to tweaking memory values with PEEK and POKE. I read that when I was 6 and loved it. Now, computer books and manuals have a tiny fraction of the scope, and yet they still considered too complicated for many full-grown adults.
Getting blown from one framework to another so easily means you're not doing a good job of getting traction on your project. Build some positive momentum and then staying the course will become natural.
In the US, marriage makes it trivial to bring your spouse over if you are immigrating from another country. Same sex couples are split apart for very long periods of times. I have seen this happen numerous times with my LGBT friends in tech, and it frequently does bad things for their relationships (as long distance relationships often do.)
