madphilosopher··on Apple Music deletes your original songs and replaces them with DRM'd versions
foobar2000 on iOS is game-changing. Thank you so much for your recommendation!

The iOS Music.app is so bad. I've suffered long enough with it.

madphilosopher··on Software I’m thankful for (2021)
redis - for simple, reliable interprocess communication

cron - gets things done on time, every time

chrony - simple, no-nonsense NTP

supervisor - keeps my processes running

tinc VPN - all my servers and services happily meshed together

Arduino - makes microcrontrollers accessible

BitTorrent - trivial, mirrored file hosting

BitTorrent Sync - simple, reliable file syncing

madphilosopher··on Windows 11 update accidentally brings the OS to older machines
There is a utility called InControl [1] that will manipulate some registry keys for you to pin your machine to a specific major version and feature update release. In other words, it can prevent automatic upgrades to a future Windows version.

madphilosopher··on Ask HN: How to move away from Google
Have a look at Opalstack [1]. They are a hosting platform for developers, and their tools include DNS hosting and email hosting. You can have your email hosted and routed in Germany. I use them for myself and about a dozen clients of mine.

madphilosopher··on Tell HN: There needs to be a “right to speak with a human”
"Our call volume is currently very high and the wait time is X minutes. Please press 1 if you would like to be put in the queue and have an agent call you."

I wish more companies did this so that I can actually get on with my day without spending it on hold.

madphilosopher··on Make Linux look like Windows 95
I grew up with a Commodore 128, and it had two screen buffers---one for 40-column mode and one for 80-column mode. I remember listing some code on the 80-column side of things so that I could edit it there and insert it into the code I had over on the 40-column side. I felt clever that day.
madphilosopher··on Is it time to remove reiserfs?
ReiserFS is my favourite Linux filesystem. I use it where most people just use the default ext4. I was originally attracted to it for the large-number-of-small-files support it had.

I appreciate the ability to shrink/grow an existing ReiserFS, which I do often enough as I add new storage to my LVM layouts.

I have never lost a ReiserFS filesystem due to corruption, so the tooling seems sufficient for me.

I hope it stays in the kernel for a long time.

madphilosopher··on Ask HN: What problem do you wish someone would solve?
I opted for a low-power FM transmitter fed by the music player daemon (mpd). Zero latency, always synchronized, works with any stereo receiver I want, plenty of clients to choose from (web-based, mobile, etc.) to control the mpd.
madphilosopher··on Graphviz: Open-source graph visualization software
I use tinc VPN [0] to connect a bunch of separated LANs together, and a built-in configuration directive

    GraphDumpFile = /etc/tinc/network/graph.viz
will generate a real-time network graph using the Graphviz DOT language. It's a cool feature that I find quite useful.

madphilosopher··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file (2020)
My choice is paper, too. For that, I really like the Pocketmod [0] system. I generate my own Pocketmod booklets using PostScript [1].

madphilosopher··on Ask HN: What is in your pocket everyday?
Olfa Touch Knife. Pocketmod PDA.
madphilosopher··on Everything you need to know about windsocks
My wife, who used to work in an airport tower, gave me this tip about reading windsocks: Imagine a tiny aircraft coming out of the mouth of the windsock---that's the direction a real aircraft will use to take off and land.
