madlynormal··on Ask HN: Is my software stack choice sound?
It does. The react native metro server will watch for file changes and hot reload the javascript bundle.
madlynormal··on Ask HN: Is my software stack choice sound?
They do. With the caveat that only the js bundle can be pushed via ota. If your app changes that touch the native implementation requires a traditional review. Check out Expo publish and Microsoft Codepush.

Give serious thought about using React Native over Flutter: 1) You can use JavaScript/TypeScript instead of learning another bespoke language (Dart). 2) With React Native you have the option of deploying OTA updates, this allows you to deploy fixes and basic updates without going through the app store review process.

madlynormal··on $499 AMD Ryzen 9 3900X Almost as Fast as $2000 Intel Core I9-9980XE
I game with a 2600x / 2080ti @ 1440p/165hz, on average I see 150 FPS in Apex Legends. Not an optimal setup, but not too shabby either. Planning on upgrading to the 3900x once it's released.
madlynormal··on AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is the fastest processor on Geekbench
Actually, with a BIOS update, the new Zen 2 CPU's are indeed compatible with most x470, b450, and even 300 series motherboards.
madlynormal··on Choosing Ruby on Rails for web development project in 2019
Similar experience at the company I work for, though we're mostly using Angular for FE.
madlynormal··on Git rebase in depth
Is there a benefit to rebasing vs merging, specifically if your flow is to squash commits before merging back into base?
madlynormal··on Professional Software Development
This is a great read, not only Software Developers, but also Product Managers, and Owners, who would like a better understanding of the development cycle they're working within.
madlynormal··on It is fast or it is wrong
> Lately I have been building applications in Python/tkinter and I still can't get over how fast it is on both my mac and PC both to start up and when running.

Has the GUI of tkinter apps improved over the past couple of years? I have yet to see an interface built with tk that doesn’t look like it was meant for Win95.

madlynormal··on John Giannandrea named to Apple’s executive team
> Is it? Is the $30 puck better than the Home assistant or does it just suck that much more in French than it does in English? (Not being snarky, genuinely asking)

Absolutely it is. In general, my Siri usage is limited to opening Google Assistant, that's how bad it is. Also, "Hey Google" works as a command on most devices.

madlynormal··on Leaving NYC for Nashville
There are neighborhoods in Queens to consider: Forest Hills, Astoria, Kew Gardens, Long Island City.
madlynormal··on Is front-end development having an identity crisis?
Where and how do you then draw the line? Should I expect you to also know Mobile Development?
madlynormal··on Tech takes over: New York is the sector's second city
This past year I moved from NYC (Queens) to Central NJ and it's been a positive experience. It's surprising how beautiful this state really is. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), those who's experience with NJ solely consist of driving along the Turnpike, or landing in EWR, really have no idea.

madlynormal··on Redoing all my home networking
Being that these products are catered more towards enterprise, and pro-sumer users I would think they'd be inclined to release patches in a timely manner. After taking a quick peek at their software change logs going back to ~2013, they consistently release monthly patches.
madlynormal··on Redoing all my home networking
I'm a huge fan of using UniFi products in the home. I run a UniFi Switch 8 and UniFi UAP-AC-Pro, covering around 2300sqft. The setup cost around $250.

madlynormal··on San Jose and Oakland area job markets tumble
There is a significant difference within different roles in I.T. As someone who's worked in the cost center side of the industry, I can relate with the author. It's a problem not limited to Oakland or San Jose. Helpdesk, Desktop Support, and related jobs are commonly temp to perm with horrible pay for the amount of stress.
madlynormal··on A story of a designer learning math
Order. After a quick scan, the Authors text seems raw and unfiltered. I'm all for multiple approaches to learning.
madlynormal··on A story of a designer learning math
A quick search turned up multiple job postings with Engineering titles (Software, Test, QA) in Canada. These companies list requirements being a CS/Engineering degree or equivalent experience. Apparently, these companies value production over title semantics.

I'm interested in knowing what you consider the meaning of Engineer to be.

madlynormal··on A story of a designer learning math
I'm a self-taught Software Engineer who struggled with basic Math. It's my goal now to go back and learn Mathematics on a deeper level. I'm reading the Book "A Mind for Numbers" by Barbara Oakley. In one of the chapters she goes into detail about how using your minds visual senses can help with grasping abstract mathematical concepts on a deeper level. Your experimentation with Math and Design, to me, is a perfect example of what Barbara was talking about.

madlynormal··on Ask HN: Does anyone here have an art degree?
I was headed towards a BFA in Fine Art/Computer Graphics in the early 2000's. I dropped out during my second year, mainly for monetary reasons. I also wasn't focused enough on my studies.

During High School, I loved 3D Modelling, Computer Music Creation, and Web Development. I thought about the possibility of majoring in CS, but like many, was discouraged by the amount of Math.

After my stint in College, it wasn't difficult for me to find a Technology related job. For eight year's I worked a mix of Support and System Admin roles, I became fed up with the "Cost Center" side of the industry. I decided it was time to pursue Software Development full-time.

I choose Web Dev as a way into the industry. I hunkered down and studied the "MEAN" stack, learned Python, experimented with C, and C#. Many interviews later, I found a Startup crazy enough to give me a chance. My life was changed forever. I was now a Full-Stack Developer.

I'm amazed by how much I've learned since then. About proper architecture, testing, general CS. I've been able to work with Angular, React, iOS, Android, Rails, Node, Spring, the list is endless. That Start-up has since been acquired, and I now work for larger Corporation, but I couldn't be happier.

I believe my time in Art school was invaluable. You learn creativity, expression, and not to fear critiqued.

While going back to school for CS is on the back of my mind, I have no regrets with the path I've chosen.

This is a nice to have, but I would love to see integration with Jira and/or Pivotal Tracker.
madlynormal··on Review: The NES Classic Edition and all 30 games on it
I too recently went down this route, while my experience with Retropie was relatively smooth, I'd would recommend also giving Recalbox and Lakka a try, I feel they're a bit more polished atm (at the cost of limited configuration). Recalbox uses EmulationStation simular to Retropie, while Lakka uses libretro. I settled on Recalbox.
