My political views aren't inline with majority of Hacker News members. Especially on issues relating to China, Russia, India and other countries that aren't allies of the United States. I will continue to read as a non-member.

madiathomas··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
...and once you are on Windows 10, you will need a degree in Computer Science to disable updates :). I was forced into Windows 10. To turn off updates, I had to disable the Windows Update service. There is no user friendly option to turn them off.
madiathomas··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
In my case, it is simply too expensive to download updates. I live in a country which is notorious for expensive data prices. I don't mind interruptions. That's a good problem to have. The choice for me is between spending a week's worth of groceries to download updates periodically or spending that money to buy food and risk getting my PC infected.
madiathomas··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
Majority of people who write these articles aren't in touch with what is happening in the rest of the world. Where I stay, it is fast but expensive. Lack of competition keeping prices artificially high.
madiathomas··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
Satellite isn't an option. Satellite here is used for digital TV only.
madiathomas··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
I would like to keep my Windows Update on, but I just can't afford it. Data bundles are too expensive where I live. I can buy a week's worth of groceries with the amount I spend buying just 2GB data bundle. Not everyone lives in a country with cheap data bundles.
madiathomas··on Apple has damaged the perceived value of software
Software needs to be maintained. You don't create it and stop updating it. Last time I checked, people who develop sofware cost a lot of money in salaries and other demands. Servers which hosts the system also need to be up 24/7. That's another cost. Maintenance of software costs more than the building phase.
madiathomas··on Ask HN: Self Hosted vs. Gmail / Outlook?
I chose Google GSuite to avoid non-delivery of emails which was happening when I was still on self-hosting. Most emails I send used to be marked as spam and blocked. Not anymore. Fee I pay every month is very low compared to the time I used to spend managing my own servers.
madiathomas··on Ask HN: Best business advice for software developers
I am able to deliver features and fix bugs faster when programming in C#.NET and ASP.NET MVC. I am able to administer MS Windows Server with my eyes closed. SQL Server too. That's why I chose MS technologies for my startup. That's what I know best. Use technology that you know best. You wouldn't use a language you hardly know to write a book. You wouldn't want to experience with a second language. Why on Earth would you want to use a sexy and cool tech that you hardly know?

The most useful piece of software that is used by almost all Software Developers around the world was created using Microsoft.NET -> That piece if software is StackOverflow.com. Microsoft .NET is not a sexy and cool tech. Solving problems is hard enough. Don't make it even harder by chosing technology you hardly know.

madiathomas··on Who will remember you in 100 years?
Living your life with a goal to be remembered in 100 years sounds more like living life to impress people you aren't even sure will regard what you are doing as important. Politicians, whether they changed the world for good or bad, are more likely to be remembered that 99% of who are contributing positively to this world.
madiathomas··on Remove United from your flight results
You are a life saver. Thank you. Let me start excluding them from my search results.
madiathomas··on Remove United from your flight results
I need this kind of extension for companies I don't want to do business with. Also need it for news sites with Adblock blockers. I don't want to see news sites like forbes when searching for news. Is there a plug-in that removes certain sites from my google search results?
madiathomas··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
My mental health improved dramatically when I deactivated facebook. I use instagram and Twitter sparingly these days. For some reason, I am unable to use facebook sparingly. When I am active, it is the first thing I check in the morning. I only use facebook after writing exams and deactivate as soon as I register for a new semester.
madiathomas··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
I have seven folders of bookmarks. Each for different topic/subject. Whenever I come across a new link which I will need to refer to in future, I store it so that I can open it from the bookmark. If I am not going to need the bookmark or no longer interested in a certan subject, I delete the bookmark or the whole folder. Some of the bookmarks have been there since 2010 because they are of the tools I still use.

I use Chrome. I like the fact that the bookmarks are synced to my Android phone and work computer. That way they are available whenever I want to use computer.

madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Inventors of transistor, led by William Shockley, already won a Nobel prize in Pysics for their invention of transistor. All 3 of them.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Looks like if you want to be famous, you have to be loud. Maybe that explains why he has been vocal against walled gardens lately.

Thanks for the recommendation. Let me check it out. Let me search for it. WWW is very important to my life.

madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Yes they are very useful. I was only counting computer related contributions since Turin award only recognise people who contributed to computing community.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Same here. I will rather win that prestigous award.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Let's hope he will be awarded one day, posthumously.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Odds of becoming a US dollar billionaire are higher than odds of winning it in your lifetime.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Fixed. Thanks.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
Fixed. 20th century.
madiathomas··on Tim Berners-Lee wins Turing Award
This goes to show how hard winning Turing award is. One would have expected someone who invented the most useful invention of the 20th century to have won this award long time ago. Maybe I am just overvaluing www because of the impact it had on people's lives.

EDITED: 20th century, not 19th.

madiathomas··on Dropbox Secures $600M Credit Line Ahead of Expected IPO
Hacker News has always been negative towards Dropbox. Dropbox was dismissed since day one around here. Still they continue to grow in leaps and bounds. At some stage, we must just admit that we don't understand Dropbox as a business. They are solving a problem that we take for granted because we are techies. I also wish they continue to succeed.
madiathomas··on C# 7 Features Worth Knowing
Author probably forgot to remove that declaration statement when he copied and pasted the new way of doing it.
madiathomas··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
I was a Delphi Developer when I started developing software professionally. I loved programming in it. I jumped ship when Anders Hejlsberg, the Chief Architect of Delphi moved to Microsoft to be a lead architect of C#.NET. I used Delphi 6 and 7. When it was time to move to Delphi 8, Borland decided to target .NET.

The choice was between learning Delphi 8 for .NET or learn Visual Studio .NET. I chose MS.NET because MS is the custodian of the .NET Framework. They are the ones on the driving seat, not Borland.

Looking back, I don't regret the move because Delphi is dying. Posts requiring Delphi are nowhere to be seen on job sites in South Africa.

madiathomas··on NSA contractor indicted over mammoth theft of classified data
Intelligence agencies are always years ahead of us in terms of technology. They probably had access to 2TB hard drives 5-10 years before us.
madiathomas··on What Killed the Linux Desktop (2012)
I have just installed Fedora Linux 25. So far so good. Only thing stopping me from switching completely to Linux is MS Office. If Microsoft can create a Linux version of Office, I am switching completely. Until then, I will keep on going back to Windows whenever I want to compile documents.

I have lots of Office documents. Alternatives are just awful. If focus of the open source community can be diverted to making LibreOffice better, Linux will win some decent Desktop market. Having 100 different distros won't help.

madiathomas··on The .NET Language Strategy
Existence of VB.NET doesn't bother me at all. I develop exclusively in C#.NET but there is a lot of VB.NET language features I wish were available in C#.NET.
madiathomas··on Ask HN: What are good software architecture interview questions?
Do you first ask them if they have personally used the service X first or you assume they know and have used it because it is "widely known"?
madiathomas··on Ask HN: The WSJ paywall workaround no longer works. Why are their links allowed?
I don't mind seeing paywalled articles on the front page but I feel I must be warned that it is a paywalled link. The same way we are warned when content is a PDF. That way I won't waste my time opening the link. I don't even want to use workarounds. If it is paywalled and/or requires me to disable AdBlock, I don't want to waste my time on it.
