My political views aren't inline with majority of Hacker News members. Especially on issues relating to China, Russia, India and other countries that aren't allies of the United States. I will continue to read as a non-member.

madiathomas··on How can you know what news is real?
Those in power will certainly prefer your kind of thinking. With your kind of thinking, Nelson Mandela wasn't going to be released from jail. I doubt they were even gonna send him to jail. They were going to quietly execute him. Apartheid wasn't going to be defeated, and black South Africans were still going to be treated like animals in their own country. It was reporting by British media, politicians, celebrities and ordinary citizens that put pressure on the apartheid government to end apartheid. What is happening in another country does affect you. Those people will soon be running to your country when life becomes unbearable.

Same as holocaust, I am sure Hitler was going to prefer that other countries don't report on what was happening so that he can continue to eliminate all German Jews. When he was done, he was going to move to neighbouring countries and continue until he reaches your backyard. By then, it will be too late.

What Donald Trump tweets, does affect me directly because Google Play on my Huawei phone can stop working with one announcement from him. I need to be up to date with the politics of the US. Recession in USresults in recessions all ov er the world. We are part of one global community and what happens on one corner of the world is everyone's problem.

madiathomas··on How Y Combinator Started (2012)
Sorry. I thought you were talking about Hacker News. Maybe it doesn't require HTTPS because there is no transmission of any sensitive data.
madiathomas··on How Y Combinator Started (2012)
Mine is running HTTPS. Even when I try to force it to use HTTP, it redirects me to HTTPS. I am on Chrome.
madiathomas··on RMS: GitHub has done terrible harm to our community
If it is a library, I will prefer an open source one, but if it is some software, I don't mind even when it is closed source.
madiathomas··on RMS: GitHub has done terrible harm to our community
GitHub probably did more good for the FOSS community than any other project I can think of. Before GitHub, it was so difficult to share code. Solutions available weren't anywhere close. I don't understand why he wants every little piece of software to be open sourced. GitHub was attractive to investors because it had closed source projects that have to pay in order to use it. I don't see how GitHub was going to succeed if they were purely open source and no-one was paying to use it. Those proprietary projects that he so hates are the ones who were keeping the lights on. They are the ones which were giving Investors hope than GitHub will make lots of money in future and they must invest more.
madiathomas··on Twitter CEO Endorses DuckDuckGo
Any evidence to backup your claims that they track incognito searches? They promised not to track and I don't see anything that suggests they do track me when I am incognito.
madiathomas··on Twitter CEO Endorses DuckDuckGo
The benefits of using Google far outweighs the bad side of Google. When I want to search for private things, I go incognito mode. I clean up my activity log from time to time. I only allow Google Maps to track my location when I am using it. To be sure that they don't track my location, I use iPhone, not Android. That way I know they won't sneak some way to track me without my consent.

I tried DDG a while ago and it didn't feel natural to me. It will be so hard for me to change a search engine after using Google for 20 years. I am too attached to this search engine and it is good enough for my needs. I rarely change things that are working for me. It feels strange for me when I am using other search engines. I feel like I am cheating on my spouse. The first thing I do when I buy an iPhone is to hide Safari and download Google Chrome. Same thing when I buy a new Windows laptop, or reinstall Windows, I use IE/Edge to download Chrome and never use IE/Edge again. Chrome is the main reason I haven't switched to another search engine. It works better with Google apps and I rely on Google apps a lot.
madiathomas··on Excite CEO: Why Excite didn't buy Google (2014) [audio]
"Fast, clean and no ads" was a big deal for me. Internet was very slow when I starting using it. When I discovered Google, it was a breath of fresh air to my life. For a change I was using a search engine that loaded fast.
madiathomas··on Shrinkflation
Coca-Cola South Africa reduced the size of a can from 340ml -> 330ml -> 300ml. Their justification was that the government introduced sugar tax to fight obesity. Yep. We do have African countries with obesity problems. Price has always gone up. Anyway, it is a healthy move. They must reduce it further and we will have a healthy nation.
madiathomas··on TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship
I feel a downvote must only be used for a comment that has vulgar, strong language or anything that isn’t in the good spirit of a good debate. Downvotes must be used only to flag comments violating guidelines, not as a way to silence those who share differing views. If you disagree, write a comment. I realised most people use downvotes powers to silence those who disagree with them.
madiathomas··on Tell HN: Google should drop Quora from search results
All I want is a button that allows me to block a website from appearing on my search results. They can keep it for others. I know I don’t want articles from Quora, Pinterest, and paywalled news sites when I am searching for something on Google.
madiathomas··on Japanese hotel room costs $1 a night, but you have to livestream your stay
That’s why I said sometimes. It isn’t all the time that you need to protect people but kids needs to be protected. People who are mentally ill must be protected from themselves. In some cases, even forcefully put them in mental hospitals. There is always a grey area.
madiathomas··on Japanese hotel room costs $1 a night, but you have to livestream your stay
> "Nobody knows better than me what is better for myself and mine."

Smokers and anti-vaccination also use the same argument. Even though their actions are also dangerous to other people(kids). I am sure they felt oppressed when public smoking was banned. Smokers will tell you that smoking isn’t different to dangerous sports or unsafe sex. Yet, dangerous sports/unsafe sex isn’t banned.

madiathomas··on Japanese hotel room costs $1 a night, but you have to livestream your stay
But even countries which aren’t under dictatorship have laws to protect people against themselves. Even those who are on top of the list of most democratic countries.
madiathomas··on Japanese hotel room costs $1 a night, but you have to livestream your stay
That’s why society as a whole makes that decision about what they consider correct and what they consider incorrect through laws and ethical standards. Unless you are in a dictatorship, laws and ethical standards are representative of the majority.
madiathomas··on TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship
Thanks for clarifying. I am in the same boat. Whenever I go against ideologies of HN, I am always prepared to lose some karma also. I refuse to use a throwaway account.
madiathomas··on Japanese hotel room costs $1 a night, but you have to livestream your stay
They must get some credit for full disclosure and giving you a discount for it. Unlike Airbnb which is charging you normal fee and still live-stream your stay. The other thing good about this hotel is that you can put measures in place to minimise exposure of your genitals because you know it is livestreamed.
madiathomas··on Japanese hotel room costs $1 a night, but you have to livestream your stay
People need to be protected from themselves sometimes. Just because someone is an adult, doesn’t mean they will always make correct decisions. Plus, you are never sure if they are doing it without being coerced and silenced at the same time by some powerful mafia.

This part made me to ask that question -> “HN notwithstanding”. it made me think he is excluding Hacker News from Ideologically/politically biased social networks.

The tools that I have already learnt are working perfectly for me. I feel these days we are just adding tools for the sake of adding new tools. Instead of spending time to perfect what I already know, I have to spend time learning how to use tools I will never need.

Is he a GP or a Specialist? From what I know, the list of best Doctors is full of specialists, not generalists. I am yet to hear someone recommending a General Practitioner because they have broader knowledge. It is always Specialists who are focused on one domain and one domain only. Not saying specialists don't have knowledge about other things medical-related. They do but their knowledge is limited. Just like my knowledge about firewalls and networking is limited because I focused on development.
madiathomas··on Developer Roadmaps
You learnt all that without any previous background in JavaScript, HTML, HTTP etc? That is impressive if that was the case. Very impressive.

CSS is hard. Even for people who have been doing it for decades. I am one of those people who can do whatever can be done on Bootstrap, but from time to time, I still struggle with CSS. It is getting better these days because browsers are co-operating and don't have their own flavour of CSS just to break other browsers.

I feel our craft is just too demanding. There is just too much to learn. If you stop learning for just one year, your knowledge quickly becomes redundant and you become unhireable.
madiathomas··on Developer Roadmaps
One thing I have realised is that most tools developed by big tech companies were built to solve their unique problem. Majority of applications will never reach scale of Google or Facebook but people still use whatever is being used or marketed by those companies.
madiathomas··on What skills are most crucial for running small internet companies?
I always try to find at least one client who has a problem I want to solve and ask them to fund development of version 1. If no-one is ready to pay for development of version 1, it is a sign that I don't have a market and shouldn't waste time developing. So far, I have developed two profitable products using this strategy. Even if it doesn't work, at least you were paid for your efforts.

5-10 years is too little considering the fact that they spent first 2-3 years gaining momentum. Even worse for Angular because it was completely changed along the way. JavaScript knowledge is still relevant even after 24 years. Whatever is on those libraries and frameworks will one day make its way into JavaScript and that will be theur end. Frameworks will come and go. Even the most successfull JavaScript library ever, jQuery, is on the decline because of newer frameworks and features like querySelector.

Maybe we need to see those skills map. I can't wait for CEOs to disagree that you don't need those skills. Most CEOs became CEOs because they started the company or are connected to the owners of the company. Most CEOs are just political leaders of a business. They didn't need to learn HR, Finance, IT etc in order to run the company.
madiathomas··on Developer Roadmaps
The best people in every field are people who are focused on one aspect and one aspect only. Linus Torvalds only focus on C programming and kernels. If you judge him based on these lists, he will be regarded incompetent because he can't do UI and is proud of it. He doesn't even try to learn the basics about it because he has his speciality and do it very well.

Lionel Messi doesn't try to be the best header or best defensive midfielder. He focuses on dribbling and scoring goals.

madiathomas··on Developer Roadmaps
All doctors, lawyers and real engineers I know only focus on one aspect. They are specialists. I know lawyers who specialises in rape cases, conveyancing, ligitation, but I have never met a lwayer who is expected to solve a rape case today and register a bond tomorrow. Same with doctors. They specialise and only focus on one domain. I was talking about skills when I included CEO, not about risk. When there is lots of money involved, almost everyone will accept to assume that risk and collect rewards.
