madethemcry··on Superformula
Ideas aren't patentable at all.

In no country I guess. You have to transform your idea in something more concrete first. A piece of hardware, a process, a composition of matter you name it.

Imagine all those stupid ideas from just lying in the bed and thinking about being patented. Nothing would have been created but everything would have been patented. That's worse than patenting a formula or a piece of software.

madethemcry··on PokemonGo-Map
I tried to decrypt it myself some days ago with Wireshark and Charles. I never got deep enough to even think of building a map of pokemons. I think this is a brilliant project and shows great knowledge of reverse engineering the involved protocol.

Thank you so much for this. This is an amazing source especially this live thread:

madethemcry··on Turkish Military’s Influence Rises Again
This article is so very much irrelevant. Read this instead:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/15/turkey-low-flying...

Something huge is happening. EVERYBODY in Turkey is watching the news at the moment. The military is rushing in every major news station, there are battles between the police and the military, every flight in istanbul is cancelled and the two bridges to europe in istanbul are closed by the military. So much going on. I don't know if the people there are happy, unsure or feared of the situation. BUT: it's a weird coup: no massive presence of the military on the street like you would suspect. Just at some major places like the palace in ankara and the mentioned bridges. To repeat me. This is by far the best newsfeed in english: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/15/turkey-low-flying...

Still a huge lag to the turkish sources but at least.. I for myself get my news and information from good friends and their whatsapp groups. And it is so terrifying.

madethemcry··on How well do you know CSS display?
I love flexbox. But be aware what it's a beast which is not that super-well supported as you might think when you look it up in caniuse.

When I'm fixing cross-browser bugs nowadays it's mostly about flexbox. It's not very often and I can always fix it in a small amount of time. But it gives me an unpleasant but also nostalgic flashback of the old days in the 00s where I fixed more CSS than I originally developed.

So yes, from time to time I run into different and not so obvious problems. My holy grail to work with flexbox today is this list:

https://github.com/philipwalton/flexbugs

Two recent issues I ran into: There is a very nasty "bug" in the current Firefox browser. It's not a real bug- more a different interpretation of the standard which will hit any developer not working primarily with Firefox I guess. It's about the intrinsic size of a flex item in combination with fluid images. You have to apply min-width: 0 to the flex-item or you get a (very) wrong sizing in some circumstances. See [2] and [3]

And another one. Most of the time I think about IE11 that it's a mostly 'modern' browser and therefore supports flexbox very good. Yes it is good enough to use. But don't underrate the flexbox bugs (just glimpse through [1]). For example you have to set `min-height > 1px` on a flex container to prevent it from collapsing in some scenario (holy grail layout is a very common case). See here [4]

I think you should know `Waking Life` (2001) as the prototype for that stylistic approach:

madethemcry··on CSS coding techniques
Wow, I have to admit I got here to the very wrong guys.

When you're already reflecting about !important, well then you're happy to use it, because you think and know about all the consequences. HN readers reflect a lot. So you're clearly the wrong audience.

I'm sorry for my harsh 'lazy and not so experienced' expression. But sometimes you have to exaggerate to be heard.

Those developers I'm talking about just don't think about the consequences. !important is not a tool for them, it's their last resort to fix something. And then? Well it's a dead end and the rise of all the problems with !important we are talking about. If they would know about chaining, they would have used chaining before using !important. It would be a mess too. Yes. But at least it's not a dead end for them and for any other developer who have to contribute to the same codebase.

madethemcry··on CSS coding techniques
Great article. It should emphasize the part about !important even more.

!important should be banned. !important divides the good guys from the bad guys. Whenever I see code with !important I instantly know that guy was lazy, unexperienced, wrong guided - you name it. And it also makes my life hard if I have to continue to work on that same css.

I also miss one of the most useful methods to be more granular with the cascading. To apply a new rule, instead of using a fresh new class or to hammer into some new style definitions with an id/!important just use the class twice in your css. More of the same class means more important.

.button.button.button outranks .button.button which outranks .button.
See here for an example: http://codepen.io/gkey/pen/ONevEe

It's not beautiful and if you're doing css right you won't need it most of the time. But try this before using the big bad boys like an #ID or the !important statement.

madethemcry··on Thousands of Hip Hop Mix Tapes, Why Not
I'm impressed by the effort he put into this.

But I can't find anything older then 2002. I mean the most interesting times where anything before, especially the 80s & 90s. Did I miss something or this this just a huge load of more or less modern mix tapes leaving out all the old gold nuggets from the good times ?

I understand that these tapes are scraped from torrents which might be the reason that most analogue cassettes are missing or maybe the very old tapes are burried in the rest of the upload queue?

I'm currently looking at this ordered version: https://archive.org/details/hiphopmixtapes?&sort=date

madethemcry··on Animated Bézier Curves
Well, there is at least another source with better visualizations AND explanations of bezier curves. So I'm not impressed at all.

The ultimate guide for bezier curves including great animations to explain the concept is from pomax:

http://pomax.github.io/bezierinfo/

I would go as far as to call it a bezier reference document. I learned both geomteric and numerical approaches to calculate, combine and draw bezier curves from this source. I am still amazed by the beauty of de Casteljau's algorithm.

The document has been submitted here before:

madethemcry··on How a Blind Person Programs
That blog post is very interesting. I really enjoyed the reading and must admit that I should spend more time on accessibility.

The speed of the screen reader Zersiax uses is unbelievable fast. I can't understand a single word:

madethemcry··on Matter.js – A 2D rigid body physics engine for the web
I am familiar with P2 JS, looked through PhysicsJS and the two very basic arcade engines grown within Phaser JS. Matter JS seems to have the exact same feature set like any other library. I haven't seen any 2D web engine, besides the JS ports of Box2D, which supports continuous collision detection (CCD), which would prevent a lot of tunneling, especially on slower mobile phones.

Why is that? CCD doesn't look more complex in theory than any other concept in a 2d physics engine.

madethemcry··on New police radars can 'see' inside homes
The posted pdf to the manual shows a little bit of the device. But here's another larger and more advanced device (linked in the article). It is doing the same but with an more elaborated output visualization.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt3ecnqdUCo

You can clearly see the output in the video.

madethemcry··on 30C3 Recordings
I found a similiar posting on HN last year. I saved exactly 97 videos from 29C3. All of them with an interesting title. My brilliant plan: watch them over the year while traveling by train or plane. Maybe I read HN or slept but I watched not a single video. Now I have another ~100 great videos to watch. I really want to watch them all but I doubt it. I need a direct brain uplink.
madethemcry··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 website has been taken down
And even more interesting the response time for that change was very short. Honestly, I had supposed it will take days for a large company like Microsoft to do so.
madethemcry··on Show HN : resolving part of Linus Torvald's problem with github - text wrapping
Has anybody looked through the comments from Linus? Pretty arrogant. I hope he only had a bad day otherwise people with a different opinion around him will have a hard time.

Btw, Joseph, you're a quality example of why I detest the github interface. For some reason, github has attracted people who have zero taste, don't care about commit logs, and can't be bothered.

The fact that I have higher standards then makes people like you make snarky comments, thinking that you are cool.

You're a moron.

madethemcry··on OOScss architecture for Rails apps.
This is totally unrelated to rails. This is about OOCss and what's wrong with twitter's bootstrap in this context. The overall conclusion about doing OOCss might be right but there are many other and better resources for this topic- without those bothering meme images.

Surprisingly enough, the first resource I found describes exactly the same example about sass placeholder and %separator http://ianstormtaylor.com/oocss-plus-sass-is-the-best-way-to...

madethemcry··on A general technique for automating NES games
Wow! Thanks! Watched the video, glimpsed through the source and now reading the paper- so entertaining!
madethemcry··on Why didn't the Romans invent the Internet?
That`s exactly what I thought of when reading the article and I expected it to be mentioned at the end. But I only could find your comment here. Well done.
madethemcry··on SSH client in Google Chrome
Never heard of this. I just read it twice to understand it. Great explanation of a widely unknown problem I guess. From now on I will never ever tell people an application is safe if you can look into the source code. Thank you so much!!
madethemcry··on Contest: recreate Mondrian painting in code, win exposition in museum
such a cool analysis. thanks!
madethemcry··on Howdoi – Instant Coding Answers via the Command Line
Great tweet! :) Maybe it`s my fear of finding my own post on stackoverflow. Anyway I`ll try to follow your advice. I have a bad ratio giving back knowledge to the community- mostly due to my even worse time management.
madethemcry··on Howdoi – Instant Coding Answers via the Command Line
I can`t use tools like this nor other local knowledge databases like evernote (although I save programming notes in evernote). If I have a pending question I ask myself two questions.

"Have I ever had this problem ?" "Did I save the answer ? (In evernote or whatever)"

To think about those two answers I need around 2000ms. After 1000ms I wrote the query and asked google again... Is it only me? I wish I would use my local knowledge database but I only use it when I`m not lucky with google after the first queries.

madethemcry··on Who wrote the 'Death Note' script?
I`m currently lost in that time sink. So many things to read and learn :)
madethemcry··on With Memoto, Affordable Passive Lifelogging Has Arrived
A very interesting approach, I have never heard of it. Thanks for the clarification.
madethemcry··on With Memoto, Affordable Passive Lifelogging Has Arrived
This project always reminds me of "The Final Cut" with Robin Williams. A somewhat disturbing near future scenario about life logging with an a brain implant and the social consequences

madethemcry··on Show HN: CSS3 animation
I totally agree with the flash analogy. All the bouncing balls and fancy pattern animations shown as "cutting edge css animations" have already been done with flash in 1999. History repeating? I use css3, js, canvas, sometimes mic and camera via js and other open technologies all day during my work but too often I get reminded of my time as a flasher- on a much harder way.

Anyway I love these days. Finally flasher and non-flasher are now in a single boat towards the future.

madethemcry··on Page Weight Matters
Oh that looks promising and it`s easier than my current solution. Thank you! For years I used the following small note saved on my mac to perform bandwidth tests of my application.

  #create firewall bandwidth configuration
sudo ipfw pipe 1 config bw 15KByte/s

  #add config to firewall
  sudo ipfw add 1 pipe 1 src-port 80

  #change. during testing
sudo ipfw pipe 1 config bw 115KByte/s

  #delete. after testing
  sudo ipfw delete 1
madethemcry··on The Root Kit
Good idea. Will try this in my next lucid dream instead of pushing the light switch
madethemcry··on PS3 LV0 Keys
Hi I also wondered for the context. Found this. http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2012/10/23/ps3-lv0-keys-...

Clarifies a lot of things. In short: These are more generic keys. More difficult to fix for Sony or even not patchable. Group was forced to do this release after keys leaked.
