Top tier "Business Plus" with up to 1M pageviews/month seems kinda low. I currently have 3 separate personal side projects with more views than that :D

In my experience I only had real problems with projects built on outdated frameworks, like cake 1.3, because the framework was not compatible with php7, and upgrading to latest version of framework meant basically a full rewrite.

A few other old sites, even relatively large ones, that were built from scratch or on homegrown CMS years ago, only took some minor fixes and mostly were up and running in couple of hours, some even worked right away without any issues.

Stats from packagist.com are biased towards newer versions. They are coming from composer users, and if you are using composer, you are a lot more likely to be using more or less up to date practices and relatively new version of php. There are millions of legacy projects and wordpress sites that have nothing to do with composer, and they are running on old versions of php much more often.

You don't really need gitlab/github for that, you can automate any kind of tests/build/deployment process with pure git hooks.

I personally feel gitlab/github are useful from community and collaboration aspects - there is nothing I couldn't do without github on my solo projects from purely technical point of view, it's strengths are issue tracking, pull requests, wikis, distribution of code.

Expandrive has a really shit pricing/marketing.

When I switched from Linux to Mac for a while some years ago, I felt the lack of easily mounting sftp as gnome does. So I found Expandrive did that very well. $39.95 seemed a bit steep for such a simple thing, but whatever, it was working great and I paid that. Few months later came out the next version and it turned out upgrades were not included, and now it's $49.95. I thought - whatever, I'll just keep using the old version because it was working quickly and flawlessly. Then all of a sudden previous version had minor update and it started lagging and randomly disconnecting. Meanwhile they kept spamming my email about sales and offers, ~20 times since then, pitching how it's dramatically faster now etc. I can't prove they purposely fucked up the old version, but it seemed really weird when it started to have problems right after new and more expensive one came out, and I'm not planning to use it ever again.

This, x1000. I just can't believe there is no setting to turn it off.

Yeah, I'm a very passive FB user and have removed all the FB battery draining crap from my phone, so I don't get meaningful notifications very often, but I'm checking it out at least every few days out of habit. It's always showing me a bunch of notifications for completely random things, like some new random post in marketplace group I'm participating, but no notification for the 50 other new posts in there or other groups. Or somebody I haven't spoken to in years is going to some event I never heard about. At this point I don't even see them as notifications, just a list of random things that happen and don't affect me.

Pretty much my experience. From time to time I see some article claiming how Firefox is getting faster and more awesome, but when I try it out I never see any improvements on my modest hardware.

Yep, I run across this often. Kind of funny that using a bit more advanced functionality instantly makes you suspicious.

I have the exact opposite experience. I have only used their support once, but it was great. One of my servers had hardware issue (unable to access half of RAM), and less than hour after first contacting them via website they had moved drives to another, identical machine and everything was running fine (and most of that time was spent waiting for my responses).

PHP/CakePHP or just plain PHP.

Because it's what I'm used to and it gets the job done.

Hetzner is great. I'm running a site with ~45TB monthly traffic on 3 physical servers and it costs me just over $150. I would have to pay many thousands to any cloud hosting provider and it wouldn't pay off in my case.

Sure, if high availability is critical for you business and money is not an issue, it may be worth it. YMMV.
