macros··on MySQL Cluster 7.2 GA Released, Delivers 1 Billion Queries per Minute
We've been happily using it for the better part of a year now. Our data set fits easily in memory and the limitations of the product aren't a problem at all. We started with riak but the cognitive overhead on the developer side was a bit much for the operations side win, mysql cluster has been trouble free so far.

macros··on Large-scale Amazon EC2 Outage
Why move off, why not just replicate your service to another provider as well?
macros··on Deployinator: Etsy's deploy tool open sourced
I was at the talk and both of these were addressed. For rollback, the answer was they don't support it, only roll forward.

Databases are handled differently from this tool. Iirc he said Thursdays are database day and all changes are done/initiated then.

macros··on 1Gbps fiber for $70—in America? Yup.
We've had our 60 mile fiber link go down twice. Once when a plane hit one of the towers it is on, the other from a fire in an underground tunnel.
macros··on "Amazon's EBSs are a barrel of laughs in terms of performance and reliability"
You can do it, but it won't scale your write load. In most cases it actually makes it worse due to the having to apply all the writes taken on the other master node in serial.
macros··on New MacBook Pro series
I've got a 15" dell xps with a core-i7, total piece of shit. Build quality is crap, broken hinges and keys. The battery holds 2/3 of original charge after 6 months. Overheats due to acpi bugs not reporting the temp correctly. Bulky.

Really miss my thinkpad. Never again.

macros··on Great. Skype is down.
Distributed whack-a-mole, sounds like fun.
macros··on Ask HN: When does a startup stop being a startup?
My definition is that once there is no longer beer in the fridge, it isn't a startup anymore.
macros··on Will you upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 tonight?
ATI released new drivers that are compatible with 1.9, working fine for me here so far. Can't wait till the free software drivers get good evergreen support and I can dump the proprietary pain.
macros··on Poll: Are you using SSDs?
We ended up with the JBOD solutions on a standard ahci controller with soft raid. We've tried a few different controllers and so far the performance with them has been been kinda sad, they just aren't made for the amount of iops the ssds provide.

I saved the results from tiobench from some of my initial testing with 6 intel x-25m here: http://gist.github.com/348417

Not bad for $2400 worth of ssds.

macros··on Ask HN: Sorting massive text files?
You do realize that the 11 minute time is just about what you would expect to read the file off a single drive?
macros··on Ask HN: 'Enterprise' hater
My friend Kragen wrote a good post about enterprise software:

The perils of only having one datacenter :(
macros··on Ask HN: IT or HR?
I'm curious as to how you finish a CS program without learning to be at least a partially decent coder?
macros··on Ask HN: Who's hiring? (march 2010)

macros··on Ask HN: Productivity at work
Also look at kdevelop. Should be a bit closer to what you have in mind and available for most any linux distro you are using.
macros··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Wikia is hiring in SF and Poland. Both technical and product roles.

macros··on More on today's Gmail issue
Luckly half our ops team is in a timezone 9hrs offset from mine, it is extremely rare for either team to have someone woken up in the middle of the night. Sleep is good.

We saw the same thing recently, we became cpu bound before we expected to and as the load balancers compensated it increased the load on the others. All we could do was to start turning off expensive features until it evened out again. And add more capacity as fast as we could of course.
