macklemoreshair··on Launch HN: Better Auth (YC X25) – Authentication Framework for TypeScript
One of our devs evaluated you guys and loved it and I do too, but you guys don’t have SCIM support which makes it really hard for us to justify moving to. We moved to an arguably inferior product because telling our product team “you’ll get scim” as part of an auth overhaul is an easier conversation. If you want enterprise customers, I’d recommend nailing down your enterprise feature set~ but the good news is that our devs liked your model the most so it’s just a matter of work for you guys to expand your functionality!
macklemoreshair··on Storage is now available in Supabase (YC S20)
Not impressed so far. We use firebase and would never consider moving over to this in its current state. Why would I pay for some hack on top of Postgres?
macklemoreshair··on A ‘Jobs to be Done’ Framework for Startups
Make people pay $50 before you build it.

Even if they don’t pay, you’ve tested the conversation and grounded it in an exchange of economic value.

macklemoreshair··on How to Recalculate a Spreadsheet
Or you could just use alteryx
macklemoreshair··on Question about Firebase, auth and react
why isn't there a front-end react package that handles all of this front-end logic as well?
macklemoreshair··on Question about Firebase, auth and react
yes, we were using cognito in this case. but all of the logic even with integrating with one of these auth providers, took us a few weeks to get polished and right.

the list i made about the different pages we had to build to get this to work correctly, it took one of our devs a few weeks to really get the login and account system and integrated with AWS cognito

macklemoreshair··on Instantly video-chat with users who are logged into your product
What did you use to build the landing page? Looks nice
macklemoreshair··on Ask HN: Finding reference customers for a SaaS product
this is a great question. i’ve talked to quite a few people about this, and having some reference customers is super valuable. easy ways are to make a hypothesis about who at what type of company would really need your software, and then use LinkedIn, cold calls, emails, referrals to get through to them.

it is definitely important to go through this process, just because this is defining the market and gets you to a repeatable model of acquiring customers.

macklemoreshair··on Product Demo Sucks Because It's Focused on Your Product
Perfect answer
macklemoreshair··on If pay had kept pace with productivity gains, minimum wage would be $24 an hour
Should we? Sounds like a broken system and going after individuals doesn’t solve anything
macklemoreshair··on How to build an open source business
typesense looks really impressive. good stuff.
macklemoreshair··on Why is Snowflake so Valuable?
alteryx will continue to exist as long as people use spreadsheets.
macklemoreshair··on 2020 Bundles
I emailed Tim Cook a few years ago as a shareholder and told him to get serious about gaming and content. Haha i highly highly doubt he ever saw it.

These gaming franchises are really the only thing bringing people to these platforms, and the one Achilles heel of the apple ecosystem.. even if apple developed its own franchises, just doing something to elevate gaming on the platform beyond a few indie games would be a long lasting competitive advantage.

macklemoreshair··on Let employees sell their equity
Having seen exit packages for director/ executive level individuals at a successful startup even, there’s a lot that doesn’t make sense. Early employees work really hard and are rarely promoted to important positions internally.

I’ve seen equity turn out well. It obviously can. And being open to those opportunities that might change your life can be valuable. But most likely it won’t - be an investor, do due diligence and make sure it’s really a rocket

macklemoreshair··on React is becoming a black box
Disagree. React hooks are great. Takes us less than half the code to build the same things and more reusable.

Learn it. Jquery feels like a black box compared to JS but it’s where things are headed, especially when it has demonstrable impact to the pace of web development.

macklemoreshair··on Deep learning job postings have collapsed in the past six months
This exactly describes my experience with self driving cars
macklemoreshair··on Ask HN: Tool for getting meaningful data out of database quickly
For sure. Join our slack and we can help you set everything up. We support snowflake as a Data warehouse.
macklemoreshair··on Filecoin: Proof of Storage Systems
Agreed the #1 issue with file coin from day one has been the idea that the value of a coin is tied to anything at all. It puts a limit on the imaginative value because it’s tied to something as commoditized as bulk storage
macklemoreshair··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
Thanks for putting this all in perspective. Sounds like bad management to me, really unfortunate. Keeping the AI unit is nonsensical.
macklemoreshair··on Chinese Hackers Have Pillaged Taiwan's Semiconductor Industry
I’ve wondered this as well
macklemoreshair··on Show HN: Tableau-like Data Visualization library (free), powered by WebAssembly
This seems interesting but I’m not sure how to use it....? We have a react app that could really use a plug and play kind of viz library. Is the idea that I could feed my data into this and it would automatically configure viz based on the dataset it sees?
macklemoreshair··on Ask HN: Why isn’t visual programming a bigger thing?
Control flow is hard to describe visually. Think about how often we write conditions and loops.

That said - working with data is an area that lends itself well to visual programming. Data pipelines don’t have branching control flow and So you’ll see some really successful companies in this space.

Alteryx has a $8b market cap. Excel is visual programming as well.

macklemoreshair··on Ask HN: How much did you, as an employee, make when your startup exited?
Yup
macklemoreshair··on Ask HN: How much did you, as an employee, make when your startup exited?
First employee. Company sold for $1B in 6 years.

$2.95m before taxes.

macklemoreshair··on Google experiments in local news with an app called Bulletin
Google should be banned from doing this.

My god, it’s not enough to try to have everyone’s thoughts monetized and leveraging that to spam their consistently shitty products let’s take over local news too!

macklemoreshair··on GM says it will put fleets of self-driving cars in cities in 2019
I see, I don’t see anything wrong with using code from the internet but maybe it’s a situation where the waymo ppl have had a longer time and more resources to get it right. They are hiring many more people at cruise so hopefully it gets better over time.

The one thing that does bother me is waymos use of captchas by users to annotate data. That’s concerning bc waymo has a data set no one else does and makes it difficult for others to compete from the get-go. Not good for consumer choice or competition. Fuck google I hope you guys do well.

macklemoreshair··on GM says it will put fleets of self-driving cars in cities in 2019
How is Waymos code different?
