machomaster··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
37signals has been having border crossing guidance at least since 2020. https://github.com/kspr9/basecamp-37signals-handbook/blob/ma...

The USA is definitely not thevonly one. Great Britain has also an extensive history of tyranical privacy-violating border crossing.

As is Israel and Russia.

The point is, the deeper you look, the better you understand how wide-spread the practice is.

Yes, as I mentioned as well.

An example. Let's assume that the work is evenly divided between days.

Imagine you want to work twice as much.

1. How efficiently can you use the reset credits if they would not reset the normal reset time?

Work with your normal weekly quota 3.5 days, press reset, work with new tokens for the rest of the week. Efficiency 100%.

2. With natural reset time going forward 7 days after each artificial reset.

You work for 3.5 days, press the reset, work for 3.5 days, wait for another 3.5 days for the natural reset, work for 3.5 days, press manual reset, work for 3.5 days, wait for 3.5 days... You can calculate the number for decreased efficiency yourself.

Further proof of my previous verdict...

It's clear that you are out of your depth when it comes to financials, business economics or a simple "what it takes to run a business".

You need money to make money. Growth strategy vs. self-financing strategy, pros and cons, when to do each. Critical chain. Limiting factor in infrastructure. Will not expand because this already goes over your head.

machomaster··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Let's be frank, you don't know what you are talking about.

Deepseek has low prices and despite that their profit margin at the beginning of this year was a whooping 82.9%. Since then, they have significantly raised prices.

You can actually check the approx. financials of OpenAI and Anthropic. The growth is insane.

There is no reason to believe why OAI/Anthropic wouldn't have a much better profit margin than DS, taking into account a much higher prices.

Astra 6.1 light, not the full-fledged version.

This is not true at all, at the most fundamental level. There is a reason why all the businesses (IT, gyms, cars, restaurants, streaming services, music, games, stores, apps, food delivery, magazines, newspapers, shaving blades, parfume, etc) are doing everything in their to get subscribers and are willing to decrease prices in order to get customers who are paying the monthly (or even better, a yearly) fee.
machomaster··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
The shitty thing about OpenAI's resets is that, unlike Anthropic, they also reset the limit (on the next natural weekly reset). It means that of you pushed the reset button 5 days into the week, you only get 2 days' (2/7 of weekly) worth of extra tokens.

Many people would get confused on the order of Opus, Fable and Mythos. In my mind, they are even from different groups; fable is a synonym forba fairytale (perhaps with songs), mythos is communicating importance and status instead of a size, while opus is the only one which in my mind communicates a big size. "What did you think about the Tolstoy's book? It was not a book, but a real opus, a tedious, incomprehensible, sluggish monumental opus."

Haven't heard him talking about urban development, except for a general preference for European-style urban design (safety, efficiency, for people), and the overall terrible American car-centered design. Please correct me if he did say something incorrect/stupid regarding the urban design.
machomaster··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
He was't talking about the color of the skin or a passport. He was talking about the culture, does it integrate well, is it compatible, is it "enriching" or actually enriching. Is the person and the group this person belongs to, a negative or a positive for the country, the society, the original/native people.

This has nothing to do with the race or a color of one's skin. Like Idris Elba is British as is Rishi Sunak.

machomaster··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
Stop calling anyone with differing opinions a racist or xenophobe. It really feels like these activists are deliberately misusing powerful words in order to weaken them (if everyone is called a racist, no matter how undeservedly, then no one is). Or they are simply stupid and do not understand the reaction they are causing with their totalitarian tactics.
machomaster··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
The drastic change in the ethnic/cultural makeup of people leaving in many Western countries is a fact. In Finland it is +70% foregners only in the past 10 years. Do you want to dispute stats? Write to the Finnish department of statistics.

Or are you arguing that this is a natural process and politicians can't influence it? Wrong. Pre-post Brexit stats show the opposite. As do the stats from Denmark, after politicians started working on the issue.

You are fine with stats, but don't like DHH's opinions about those facts? Well, those are opinions and everyone has a right to them. Opinions and feelings based on morals can't really be proved incorrect.

Or are you tone policing?

So what exactly is the actual problem? "Someone on the internet has wrong opinions and is not a carbon copy of me, politically"? What a silly and totalitarian behavior to call other people dirty names!

machomaster··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
Because I understand what sociology is and isn't, since I too have "a background" in sociology and urban development. As well as statistics, history and even futurology.

Appeal to authority is a bias for a reason. In this case it wasn't even that well executed.

A "background in software development" (an HR or a marketing girl in the website design sweatshop) does not give enough relevance and authority to speak about the technical details of Linux kernel. Vice versa.

machomaster··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
> I have a background in sociology and urban planning

What an interesting way to make it sound like that means anything. "Background" - how appropriately vague...

And how exactly does this make you an expert on European, and especially Danish, immigration, culture and vox populi?

machomaster··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
You can accuse DHH of many things, but not of grifting, insincerity, political politeness/correctness just not to offend people. The guy speaks his mind and is unapologetic about it.

I understood that.

I was simply saying that when (not if) Chinese AI models will pass Americans, it will probably be game over and Americans will never catch up, let alone become leaders again.

Check the names of the researchers in the DeepSeek's latest paper. Full of Chinese names. Check the list of names in Google's paper. A very similar view. Anecdotal, but quite thought-provoking...

China is a somewhat neutral player, supplying both Russians and Ukrainians. Their attitude and action is way less one-sided than Trump's; especially in the first year of his latest presidency.
machomaster··on Xiaomi MiMo v2.6
The analogy makes little sense. The USA was not in front of the USSR and Sputnik merely showed that. It is at this point that the Americans woke up, put a lot of effort and finally were able to surpass the Soviets during the Apollo missions.

China was never ahead of the USA in AI. So perhaps a more proper analogy is the Moon landing. In real history the side that lost the race never got its mojo back...

machomaster··on English: A vs. An
It is similar to "they were there" vs. "they was there". You might as well call both examples as a regional pronunciation.

I prefer to call both of them mistakes. :-)

Otherwise we just end up accepting anything as valid, anything as a proper usage. The spelling bee loses any sense, because all the losers will claim that they were simply speaking/writing English in their own way.

machomaster··on English: A vs. An
These are typical errors made by the native speakers. Most (every?) language has rules, which are more difficult for a native speaker to follow vs. a well-spoken foreigner.

Other examples in English are:

- who vs whom

- then vs than

- ask vs acks

The parent had a practical problem. I told him what kind of simple banking feature would easily solve it. I also mentioned a bank, which has it for sure.

For sure, this feature is not a Revolut-exclusive. Plata from Mexico should also have this and much more, from what I have read.

If American/European banks don't have such a simple feature, this speaks volumes about them.

Your comment has a vibe of "a bank that doesn't have a local office has no decent service". To each their own, I guess.

machomaster··on I don't like passkeys
> After the publication went live, Revolut reassured that the review is still ongoing. "We have so far still found no indications of any breach."

> "We have checked the user and card identifiers contained in the alleged records against our systems, and none of them correspond to valid or genuine Revolut identifiers," the spokesperson said.

machomaster··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
I don't want to have separate directories. I want a single easily shareable and copyable file. The file that can be opened anywhere in the future.

If you check what kind of stuff SingleFile does, you will find a list of things Firefox is not doing.

machomaster··on I don't like passkeys
Just use a bank with a decent service (like Revolut), create a separate card number for your kid (10s within the bank app), where you put more money when needed and can easily put the number on hold or activate it whenever you please.
machomaster··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
No it doesn't. Firefox (not sure about Chrome) saves to html, which:

1. Leaves all kinds of css, image file, which might be hundreds for each saved page. SingleFile saves everything in a convenient, working, single file. 2. is not really saving all the info.

I got burned when I was using Mozilla/Internet Explorer to save mhtml files, which ended up not being supported anymore. Additionally, turns out, they were saving the original versions of pages, without the Javascript changes, meaning that all the opened threads of comments I wanted to save were never saved! Never again!
