machinehermit··on Civil rights leaders blast Facebook after meeting with Zuckerberg
Lol we obviously have different morals because Facebook did the right thing.
machinehermit··on Stockton extends its monthly $500 UBI payment experiment
Not to mention it improves their well being exactly because they are better off relative to the people who are not getting UBI.

I forget what the conjecture is called in economics that UBI would essentially all be captured by rent and housing prices.

I don't have to think about it very long to see how obvious that is.

machinehermit··on Designing UI for VR Hand Tracking Applications
To take a counter view.. I have literally been waiting to get into VR since 1993 and the Lawnmower man.

Why do I not have a system?

It is not cost. It is not building the system.

I would say the main reason is I don't like video games.

There is just something so lacking with VR if you don't want to play games.

I remember the old MIT media lab mobile computing devices and videos in the 90s. They were nothing like a smart phone. More like the failure of google glass.

I do wonder if the headset is simply a wrong path.

machinehermit··on Gambling Is Not a Retirement Plan
You don't see the flaw in this line of thinking that if you solved what you suggest you just raise the bar and are left with exactly the same problem?
machinehermit··on Ask HN: How can a programmer help with current events?
The problem is these protest are not effective, period.

All this is ultimately doing is making racist people more racist.

I am a white guy and my girl is black. You know how much we talk about race? None, zero, never. It only ever comes up when racist people point out we are not of the same race. Our values, taste and upbringings are literally the same. If you think black people can't be racist try dating a black woman as a white guy, lol.

The way to get past racism is not to be a racist and divide people on the basis of race. That is it.

What is happening right now is going in the wrong direction.

You would have a hard time helping the cause of racist assholes more than these protest.

machinehermit··on Facebook's Zuckerberg accused of setting dangerous precedent over Trump
A dangerous president to not censor the President?

Yea ok.

machinehermit··on What Did Bach Sound Like to Bach?
BWV 999 prelude for life! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnpaMm_2QYc

Bach's lute music towers over everything ever made to me. Can't listen to it on guitar either. Has to a real lute.

don't care either if it was written for lute harpsichord.

machinehermit··on What Facebook doesn’t understand about the Facebook walkout
Absolutely, I personally hate Trump and Facebook but he is still the president.

The idea it is even a discussion to censor the president is lunacy.

machinehermit··on Paying Remote Employees Fairly
The rockstar's locally inflated salary goes down of course.
machinehermit··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
Totally agree.

If all the cars in the area know one of the cars is about to do something and can adjust accordingly then it will be so much safer than what we have now it is almost unimaginable.

It would seem at some point in the future, people are not going to even want to be on the road with a human driver who is not part of the network.

machinehermit··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
There is also an easy solution of just staying put.

I have driven in snow a few times that I was not sure I was even on the road. Or the only way I knew I was going the right direction was because I could vaguely see the break lights of the car going 15mph in front of me through snow.

That is an easy problem to solve though because I simply should not have been driving in that.

machinehermit··on Results: Finland’s Basic Income Experiment Help Us Build the Post-Pandemic World
We should just give everyone $100k a month so we can all be rich.

If you think that is a stupid idea then what is the threshold with a lower amount that this becomes a smart idea?

What evidence is there that whatever threshold you come up with is less stupid than my $100k a month?

machinehermit··on Extremely disillusioned with technology. Please help
Everyone has different talents. Without those bloodthirsty vultures we would have a hard time allocating capital to the right projects.

My experience with straddling a bunch of different worlds is that people in technology are often just impossible to satisfy. Mad because the ping pong table doesn't have exactly the brand of ping pong balls they wanted.

IMO it comes down to that the time in front of a screen to become a great programmer is not exactly great for mental health.

You have to use the great problem solving skills you have to solve this problem for your own brain though and stop blaming the external world. There is nothing more that could be done to make you happy.

machinehermit··on 74% of Startups Have Trimmed Staff, 65% Have Less Than 6 Months of Cash
I am sure a big factor with this is being married with kids also.

I work in sales and pushing 50 but have no kids or wife. I am spending most the day today drinking coffee and trying to learn to think in functional javascript.

The day just does not look like this when I am in a relationship. I can't even imagine if you throw kids in the mix. If I had a kid I would be spending my time wiring up their brain instead of trying to rewire my own.

machinehermit··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
The problem with this though is all the data I look seems to be such a huge % of deaths of people over 75-80.

That demographic is going to die soon from something. There is a level of irrationality with all this in pretending that we are dramatically extending the lives of 80yos.

I remember the first death in NYC, Cuomo said they were over 70 and would have died from the flu also because they were in poor health. We have completely lost that level of rationality.

A huge % of the people we are "saving" are going to die in the next year from something else.

When I have tried to express this thought to people I have mostly got a sarcastic "yea fuck grandma, let her die" response that is completely irrational.

machinehermit··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked
We basically have had a bubble in restaurants.

Based on Yelp and google we have about 29 Indian restaurants here and 25 craft beer breweries.

There is not a big Indian population here. I love Indian food but 29 restaurants is absurd.

10 years ago we didn't even have ten Indian restaurants and no craft breweries.

I wouldn't doubt whenever you have a really long business cycle expansion you end up with far too many restaurants open.

machinehermit··on The Inevitable Coronavirus Censorship Crisis
While I agree with you 100%, the average person in general is just clueless.

I was talking with my mother last week and she had never heard of bitcoin.

She is on facebook literally all day but had not even heard the word bitcoin before.

She is just clueless. She wouldn't even begin to be able to understand this debate.

machinehermit··on Colleges at the breaking point, forcing ‘hard choices’ about education
I just don't agree we should be discussing how every American can go to college.

I am a drop out. I really had no business ever going to college in the first place.

I love what I do now but I had to figure things out on my own.

Free college would have just been more free party time for me. You can run it a 1000 times and every time I am partying.

What we need to do is make sure people like you don't put off college because it becomes too pricey.

I also think I would have figured things out sooner if I would not have been pushed so hard by all these signals as a young man that college was a given.

machinehermit··on Climate experts call for 'dangerous' Michael Moore film to be taken down
Makes no sense.
machinehermit··on Climate experts call for 'dangerous' Michael Moore film to be taken down
There is nothing more disturbing than this poison in the minds of young people that an idea they don't agree with should be destroyed.

It just feels like it is a matter of time until we have something as insane as the French Revolution in the US.

machinehermit··on Using Reinforcement Learning in the Algorithmic Trading Problem
It is an absurdity to believe there has never been a good trading strategy published in a paper.

The real value though of publishing a trading strategy is in signaling to future employers.

Ultimately, money is made by the ability to come up with new strategies. Any single strategy is only going to live for so long before it dies and it is no longer profitable.

machinehermit··on Using Reinforcement Learning in the Algorithmic Trading Problem
Thanks for the Gell-Mann amnesia effect.
machinehermit··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
Not me. I am like a high energy dog that needs to be walked until the owner is annoyed. I love my normal life. This lack of stimulation right now is terrible for my mental health.
machinehermit··on Books Won't Die
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with the adaptive display on is just better than any book IMO. The lighting is always perfect, the text is clearer than paper.

I will be heart broke then I eventually have to replace it. To do anything but read on it is a sin.

Reading on paper, I am just slower than reading on the S 8.4.

2560x1600 on such a small screen is what is needed to beat paper.

machinehermit··on China May Have $5.8T in Hidden Debt with ‘Titanic’ Risks
I have always found the idea that we in the US shit on China's accounting practices rather hysterical. If "The pot calling the kettle black" ever applies it is for that.
machinehermit··on Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs from 2020, Replacing Intel
IMO if you have never tried KDE plasma and install KDE connect on your mobile devices you have no idea what you are missing.

KDE connect is irreplaceable 5 minutes after you install it.

machinehermit··on Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs from 2020, Replacing Intel
No comparison is fair if someone hasn't used Plasma.

I could not care less about "freedom" or these other philosophical aspects of Linux.

Plasma is just straight up amazing on every level.

machinehermit··on Stock Markets Tumble Amid Worries Over Tech Firms and Trade Tensions
"Stock market starts to correct because it has been doing nothing but going up for a decade, News at 11".
machinehermit··on As Facebook Struggles, Rivals’ Leaders Stay Mostly Mum
I think it is reflection of the total bubbles people live in.

I have facebook and not a single person has deleted their account. Honestly, I doubt any of my friends on facebook know or care about this "movement".

It is just some goofy form of entertainment for young people who waste too much time on twitter.

machinehermit··on Startups not status: Japan's top grads rethink success
haha absolutely.

I even noticed this with a black and white picture of some AI startup group picture google bought. It looked exactly like a band picture from the 90s. Everyone all serious looking, different fashions, the lead singer/ceo a little bit more forward and center in the photos.

Another amusing cultural thing is I remember the saying like "even CEOs of big business want to be in the music industry".

Now it is the opposite and even the biggest music artists in the world want to be CEOs.
