We use OnSIP, http://www.onsip.com/ I HIGHLY recommend them. Call quality is great, support is competent, and the pricing structure is usage based, not a flat rate. I don't work for them, and I am not an affiliate, but I have been a customer for 3-4 years.
Am I the only one bugged by the incorrect use of "year 2010 Anno Domini"? Anno Domini means Year of Our Lord, so the proper usage is 'AD 2010', as in "The Year of Our Lord 2010".
I think the author misses the point at the end - it's not a choice between Adobe messing up and users not updating. The question is "why are so many users running outdated versions?" I believe one of biggest reasons is because Adobe makes it such a pain in the neck to update their products.
Perhaps this is an indication that a single, all encompassing program is impossible to fit to every student. Perhaps a range of programs could be offered, and students and their parents could chose the education program that fits their needs best. A choice in education, if you will.
"This fear arises, at least in part, because people don’t know their neighbors as well as they did in times past. People tend to lead private lives, largely indoors, and adults center their social lives more around their work companions than around their neighbors." Seems like a solution will require addressing more than just the kids.
I think this misses the point of the original article. While the overall point of ignoring progress may be valid, Mankiw is aware of the ability of markets to reduce costs. He is asking about how to allocate scarce resources. If there is a method for immortality which costs more than the average production of the population, there is no way to give it to everyone. Who gets it? It is a thought experiment, not a prediction for advanced cultures.
My folks came to Maryland in 1660 or so, on the first colony ship. They were Catholic (illegal at the time in Britain) and looking to start somewhere more Papist-friendly.
"'Mommy & Me' is catchy and alliterative, and, in my neighborhood, it’s the standard label for parent-child events, whether fathers are welcome or not. The term is also unapologetic in its exclusion of fathers, and no analogue exists: the top results for a similar Google search for 'Daddy & Me' include disturbing news items about horrific domestic violence." An interesting look at how our language both reflects and shapes our ideas of what parenthood is.
Of course these people will still be trotted out whenever someone wants a new law. Every politician loves having people who can justify any policy they want to enact without fear of contradiction.
It's about the poor, stupid people? We can't let the proletariat know of these ideas, since they are too weakminded to hold against them? No, you can't ban opinions just because they are stupid and wrong. Calls for violence are one thing, but someone expressing an opinion is the definition of free speech. Facebook may have the right to take them down, but I am glad they are holding firm.
I use this feed: http://nirmalpatel.com/fcgi/hn_feed.fcgi which gets me full text of the article with links to the HN comments. Of course, I found it originally in the standard HN RSS feed.
The fact that this question keeps coming up without a solid, convincing answer seems to indicate that there is no simple answer. It is most likely a huge combination of factors. This also means that simply copying one aspect of another country's solution is likely to be a disaster.
Showing that even international standards can be poorly thought out, and fail in real-world application. And when they do, they are hard to go back and fix.
This would be a disaster of biblical proportions. GR isn't just a aggregator of feeds, it is a feed-based social network! I can see, in real time, what my friends are reading, what they find interesting, and their thoughts on the issues. I can break up my content by subject, tag items as I see fit, then publish feeds of specific tags and shared items. No other tool has allowed me to so easily share what I am READING, not just thinking. Since I am not a very interesting person, my thoughts are not often that significant, but as a voracious reader I can function as a filter on other people's content, and my contacts do the same for me. Losing Reader would devastating to my info-vore ways.
So, a bunch of regulations passed with the intent of helping the "Little Guy" are being abused by the people with the power and influence to have them rewritten. I really hope no one is surprised by this.
Clearly the answer is to have Congress hold some hearings and add new layers of regulation. Since that always works so well.
