m8s··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
Freedom speech as defined in the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

What we are seeing here is a consequence of our capitalist society. It is now more profitable for eBay and other companies to pull or ban things that may cause controversy. There's no censorship here. You can find these books at other retailers. In fact, you're likely to see some businesses thrive by specifically carrying the things that other retailers refuse to carry.

m8s··on Gab Has Been Breached
This is a pretty non-political rundown from Troy, and a great read as always. It's not always easy to find trustworthy people, but he's one of them.

If anyone is offended by supposed political leanings in this article, I'd suggest separating Torba's political views from his words. Blaming a data breach on "mentally ill tranny demon hackers" (his words, not mine) is not a sane or rational thought. The most realistic scenario is that he knows exactly what he's saying and is doing so simply to rile up fanatics, because otherwise he actually believes that and should be in an institution. I'm not sure which one is worse.

m8s··on React Cosmos – Build UIs at Scale
Unfortunately, anything on HN even remotely related to Javascript seems to be scrutinized much more severely than other projects. Oh, your website uses animations? Huge problem. Emojis in the README? Worthless project. I think people come into these threads just looking to air their grievances.

Cosmos looks awesome. Thank you for all your hard work. I've been using Storybook for a while, but I'll give Cosmos a try on my next project.

m8s··on Anime is booming, so why are animators living in poverty?
Not only do they make some of the lowest salaries in the industry, they work the longest hours as well. Employers that allow people to "work on their passions" use that as a bargaining chip to lower salaries.
m8s··on Start with a Niche
I like that they have this page: https://fibery.io/blog/fibery-vs-x

I think more companies should call out and explain the differences between their product and some of their competitors. Pretty good idea.

m8s··on José Valim Reveals “Project Nx” (Numerical Elixir) [audio]
Yeah, this seems like a real disingenuous complaint around a pretty incredible (and still super young) accomplishment. I would also assert that Elixir is an excellent language syntactically to work on data science-y projects. I'm really excited.

m8s··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
What is more extreme than attempting to violently overthrow the government?
m8s··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
Domestic terrorism: Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature. [1]

Are we going to play this game though? People stormed the Capitol hunting for members of Congress. They were chanting "Hang Mike Pence". If they weren't white, would you have any trouble calling it terrorism? Would insurrection or sedition be more agreeable?

Comparing a wedding to a terrorist attack on the United States Capitol is absurd.
m8s··on Chamath Palihapitiya on Wallstreetbets [audio]
I agree that he ignored a few important questions. There is the very real possibility (and it's more like a certainty) that regular people will join the bandwagon too late and get hurt. When hedge funds get hurt, they still have plenty of money to survive. When I see posts (although who knows if they are real) about putting your life savings on something like this, losing that money has very serious real-world implications.

This all is certainly highlighting that these systems have been fundamentally unfair for a long time, but that doesn't mean that real people won't be hit hard financially as a result.

I don't know, maybe I'm just far too conservative with my money to do something like this.

m8s··on The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company
I think at certain levels of wealth, being "normal" is simply impossible. But there are people who use their fortunes for altruistic causes and that should be celebrated. Unfortunately, most of these cases simply highlight fundamental issues in other areas of our society.
m8s··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
I wouldn't minimize your struggles simply because others potentially have it worse. It's okay to say "this really sucks for me" and also be thankful for the things you do have that others might not.
m8s··on Degoogling My Life
I don't think there is a valid alternative to YouTube, but I've found bookmarking creators instead of subscribing with an account to be a fine way to enjoy some content without having it tied to your Google account. It's not perfect though. Perhaps Patreon can partly fill that niche instead?
m8s··on Running MatterMost as a Unikernel
This is good info, thanks. I really like Mattermost as a Slack alternative and am slowly trying to transition friends to a private server (and away from Slack/Discord).
m8s··on YouTube bans Steve Bannon's podcast channel
This is the first line of the first paragraph of the Mueller Report:

> The Russian government interfered in the 2016 presidential election in sweeping and systematic fashion. Evidence of Russian government operations began to surface in mid-2016.

What part of this was a lie?

m8s··on Stripe bans Trump campaign
Stripe isn't preventing the Trump campaign from fundraising. You can feel free to withdraw cash from your bank account and mail it to the Trump campaign. Stripe also isn't prohibiting all Republicans from using Stripe. It seems that the people claiming that this the end of free speech are unaware that demonstrating that freedom of speech can have consequences. In this case, that free speech was arguably inciting an insurrection.
m8s··on Insurrectionists’ social media presence gives feds an easy way to ID them
We can only hope. This was never funny.
m8s··on Simple Bank Is Closing
Just as a heads up, you can email support after your free trial and ask for an extension. They'll pretty much always give it to you. If you're a student, you can send in your student ID and get a year free. YNAB changed my life.
m8s··on Xfce 4.16

m8s··on Twin – Tailwind with the flexibility of CSS-in-JS
As best I can tell, it’s not React-specific. Check the How It Works [1] section. You can use this anywhere you use styled-components or emotion.

m8s··on Twin – Tailwind with the flexibility of CSS-in-JS
Jeez, you’d think you were on Reddit with all these comments.

Like it or not, Tailwind (and things that help people use Tailwind) serves a very valid niche. Unwrapping years of legacy CSS, intertwined with CSS injection in jQuery, is no simple feat. Adding Tailwind to that project and only writing Tailwind has helped immensely.

The downside is that there are times when you have a really long list of classes on a given tag, which can be difficult to read and parse. I’m not sure if this tool is right for me or my team, but that’s one use case I could see for using it.

Are we really complaining about emojis in READMEs nowadays? Good grief.
