m4tthumphrey··on I got an FBI record at age 11 from dabbling in cryptography (2015)
Off topic: I'm watching Hackers[0] for the first time tonight and this is on Hacker News.

I bet this change will be live in the next few hours.
m4tthumphrey··on Meat Loaf, 'Bat Out Of Hell' singer, has died at 74
+1 for Formula 51 (51st State in UK). The same clip is on YouTube (posted in my previous comment)
m4tthumphrey··on Meat Loaf, 'Bat Out Of Hell' singer, has died at 74
The 75/35 votes to comment ratio says otherwise.
m4tthumphrey··on Tell HN: A Conversation Needs to Be Had over Subscription Software
May be an unpopular opinion, but I don't mind "renting" software, as long as I can cancel whenever I want. I guess in B2B land contract periods are more likely and sometimes essential.

Imagine!
m4tthumphrey··on Meat Loaf, 'Bat Out Of Hell' singer, has died at 74
So sad. FYI he wasn't just a singer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy4DIVsQgMA
m4tthumphrey··on My first three months with a Nokia dumb phone as a daily driver
I've found long term success in getting off of Facebook (never used Twitter) using the following steps (I still visit Insta most days on the native app however):

* Got rid of the native apps (except for Messenger Lite) years ago

* Switched to mbasic.facebook.com in the browser

* Recently I logged out of said mobile site

Now every time my muscle memory goes to facebook.com it asks me to login and I close the tab. I don't miss it at all and have no urge to login once I see the login form. I think I may have finally quashed my FB addiction!

m4tthumphrey··on Number of people on government websites now
Visitor Locations Now: London 2%

Clearly a HN hug!

m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: Burned Out. What Now?
I would like to write a much bigger reply but for right now, these are my core principles for dealing with, and now preventing, burnout.

Exercise, get outside once a day, get a daily routine in place, sleep better

m4tthumphrey··on Nothing like this will be built again (2002)
From PaulAJ's comment:

> Just to point out that Stross's blog is running off an elderly PC in his office, so no surprise that when it makes the front page on HN (twice in two days now) it gets slashdotted.

m4tthumphrey··on Nothing like this will be built again (2002)
I imagine this sort of experience is something most of us would not forget and that we'd be in awe the entire time.
m4tthumphrey··on What NPM should do to stop a new colors attack
I'm not 100% on how npm handles the following but composer (PHP package manager) allows you to specifically lock a version for a particular del then when your ready to upgrade and test you can manually change that pinned version to get the next. Thus if Log4j happened, your project wouldn't automatically pull in the fix but you would know about it through media etc and then would go into your project and change the version to the one with the fix.
m4tthumphrey··on Procrastinatory Doom Loops
Story of my life.

The worst part is once I actually start the task, its usually done in the most enjoyable and timely manner. It's exhausting.

m4tthumphrey··on An interview that disappeared – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Unfortunately it does seem like this is the direction football is taking. A World Cup every 2 years, some sort of exclusive Super League, etc etc. Football is a trillion dollar market with no cap in site. The fans are slowly being left behind whilst the "new money" of the Middle East and co are doing their best to takeover. They still don't seem to realise however, that football is 0 without fans.
m4tthumphrey··on An interview that disappeared – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Naively perhaps, I'd like to believe that someone like Beckham who has historically always been the face of great causes and events (UNICEF, London 2012, etc) would show some balls and actively campaign AGAINST this shit show. But instead he has taken the "if you can't beat them without trying, get paid obscene amounts of money" route.

I fear that this will become his legacy and right now, I think he's ok with that.

m4tthumphrey··on An interview that disappeared – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Unfortunately, as a life long fan of football in the UK, this rings true from the opposite side, and I'm sorry you had to go through that.

However, the sport itself has nothing todo with the bigger picture here. It just so happens that it's the biggest sport in the world, hence worth so much money to $REGIME who will do anything they can to capitalise.

m4tthumphrey··on An interview that disappeared – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Teams pulling out would most definitely make a difference. It does make you wonder why the players/managers do not get together and... strike.
m4tthumphrey··on An interview that disappeared – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
I still can't fathom how Qatar 22 is actually going ahead. The worst part is legends such as Beckham and co who are willingly endorsing it for $150m+.
m4tthumphrey··on Gitlab Epic Issue Relationships Deleted
Getting an eye into how the Gitlab team are working to resolve this is mind boggling (in a good way!) Just look at everything going on in this issue: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/gl-infra/production/-/issues/6...

m4tthumphrey··on Ocean drone captures video from inside a hurricane
I genuinely feel quite terrified just watching that first video.
m4tthumphrey··on Spotify Box
Possibly off topic, but does anyone experience major issues with Spotify Connect? Maybe its just Sonos devices but it rarely works well.
m4tthumphrey··on Confessions of a Michelin Star Inspector
I'm not sure I agree with this as the customer. Sure, the fast food businesses just want to get as many people in as possible. But, as a customer of McDonalds[0], there is a time and a place where it's a treat and I enjoy the experience!

m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Peloton bike+ - I got suckered into the hype but 84 rides in 9 weeks and it truly does live up to it

Garmin Fenix 5 - Ok this was actually 4 years ago but still it was first to mind

Hive heating - Again, 6 years ago, but my partner and I use this all the time through the colder months. Being able to control the heating from your phone when you're an hour away from home is delightful
