m4tthumphrey··on Show HN: Scroll through all 43252003274489856000 Rubik's Cube states
This is very satisfying to play with, top work!
m4tthumphrey··on The Cold Email
I was simplifying my HN comment for brevity, I didn't just go "you've made a mistake by not hiring me, gimme the job" in the letter.
m4tthumphrey··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Putting all of the ethical issues aside, do you know how fucking boring this would be?
m4tthumphrey··on GCC steering committee announces AI policy
I like the top reply:

> "The true purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill without allowing skill to access wealth."

m4tthumphrey··on The Cold Email
I was rejected from a job interview a few years ago - wow 13 years ago now - and was honestly shocked after how well the interview went.

I decided to write a letter (email) to the HR department implying they'd made a huge mistake (the head of HR was in the interview too). She (as much as I knew at the time) overruled my would-be boss and the rest is history.

Best email I ever sent.

m4tthumphrey··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
No I'm not, I expressed it...

I prefaced it with that to simply say I knew it'd be an unpopular opinion.

m4tthumphrey··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
I'm going to get downvoted/flagged but I feel like we need a new type of "Show HN/Tell HN" etc for "New AI Model Available".

Front page is tedious these days.

m4tthumphrey··on OpenAI's Ad Business Is on Pace to Miss Its Own Forecast by 90%, Analyst Says
Sure, they retarget ads they think you might want to see, but the difference is when using Google you are actively looking for something, not passively.
m4tthumphrey··on OpenAI's Ad Business Is on Pace to Miss Its Own Forecast by 90%, Analyst Says
When you use Google you are generally actively looking for something. When you use Facebook you get ads for things you aren't looking for.
m4tthumphrey··on Dopamine Fracking
So. Many. Commas.
m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: Is the web for machines (/llm.txt) the one we wished we had as humans?
OP clearly meant that the AI players are not reading and/or honouring llms.txt of other websites when scraping.
m4tthumphrey··on The desperation of NYTimes
Semi linked:

I, like many others, play Wordle daily. When the page loads, there is a button to play todays challenge. Then, there is a very small delay (like 100ms) and suddenly a button to "View all games" appears, right where you would have tapped/clicked on the button to play the puzzle. To me, viewing all games is a way to "see what you could have" if you subscribed.

m4tthumphrey··on Apparently Google hates us now
No, I think "us" is apt, considering this will eventually affect all sites that rely on traffic from Google search, which is basically every text heavy site.

All we can hope for is that people will stop using search (after eventually having enough of the AI wave) for these sort of niche sites and will bookmark and access them directly in future. I don't have much hope.

m4tthumphrey··on New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing
Crazy. I'm sure I paid around $40-70 back in 2016.

Honestly Plex has been wearing me down for years but I'm too lazy to move to an alternative.

m4tthumphrey··on SecurityBaseline.eu
I think (a public) phpMyAdmin in 2026 deserves a good bashing.

(I have been working with PHP for 20 years)

m4tthumphrey··on SecurityBaseline.eu
Came here to say this. Absolutely insane.

Why is phpMyAdmin even still needed/wanted in 2026? It's not exactly user friendly for a developer, let alone an average Gov employee...

m4tthumphrey··on Rank the 50 best Apple products
Cool idea but I am not old enough/have not have enough (any) interest in some of the older products, so I think a "skip" option would be cool.
m4tthumphrey··on Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features
An airgapped TV I expect.
m4tthumphrey··on GitHub appears to be struggling with measly three nines availability
GitLab isn't much better right now either unfortunately.
m4tthumphrey··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
My partner and I were planning a West Coast trip for the World Cup this year for my 40th, but we decided to solely do Canada instead. Can't see how it won't end up being the best decision we've ever made.
m4tthumphrey··on Wikipedia was in read-only mode following mass admin account compromise
I can't edit nor be bothered to reply to all of the negative responses so I'll put it here.

Pretty much all of you missed the larger point. PHP was what allowed me to not work in retail forever, buy a forever house, never have to worry about losing my job (this may change in the future with AI) or being at risk for redundancy, having chosen to only work for small, "normal" well run profitable businesses.

Unless you're building a hyper scale product, it does the job perfectly. PHP itself is not a security issue; using it poorly is, and any language can be used poorly. PHP is still perfectly suitable for web dev, especially in 2026.

m4tthumphrey··on Wikipedia was in read-only mode following mass admin account compromise
Also the language that runs half of the web.

Also the language that has made me millions over my career with no degree.

Also the language that allows people to be up and running in seconds (with or without AI).

I could go on.

m4tthumphrey··on Most-read tech publications have lost over half their Google traffic since 2024
You'll just see it within AI responses instead.
m4tthumphrey··on Elevated Errors in Claude.ai
Are you seeing a return yet? Semi-serious question.
m4tthumphrey··on Elevated Errors in Claude.ai
How are you spending that much?
m4tthumphrey··on Ask HN: How are you all staying sane?
> Reminder. What passes for news today wouldn’t have registered for most people 100 years ago.

This is a great point.

m4tthumphrey··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
Will programs even exist in the future? Surely the AIs will just take input and return output?
m4tthumphrey··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
I feel similar but since starting to use Claude (only 4 days ago) I get it. "Vibe coding" to me is just a new term for pair programming.
m4tthumphrey··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
Ah yes, I was being dense. I was so obsessed with the steepness of the last point drop and completely missed the overall trend line! Thanks.
m4tthumphrey··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
I find this very interesting, but am I being dense here? https://www.arthurcnops.blog/images/hn-show-dead-one-point.s...

The legend says SHNs are getting worse, but surely if the % of SHN posts with 1 point is going DOWN (as per graph) then it's getting better? Either I am dense or the legends are the wrong way round no?
