m4r35n357··on Understanding Bash (2018)
Maybe we are at cross purposes. My default shell is bash, but my default "sh" is dash. This is as it should be (and is default in Debian & Ubuntu I think).

If you are talking about interactive use, of course bash is the one to use, but for writing shell scripts, it is a 10X interactivity overhead" over dash.

m4r35n357··on Understanding Bash (2018)
It is in both ash and dash, the shells I mentioned. Your attempt at point scoring is irrelevant but expected.

ash & dash are about 100kB executables (POSIX plus a tiny number of non-interactive improvments like 'local'), bash is 1100kB. Every shell and subshell.

"Variables may be declared to be local to a function by using a 'local' command."
m4r35n357··on Understanding Bash (2018)
If the default sh is set to bash (yuk!) you will need to use ash or dash to get the basic POSIX shell and man page. On my Xubuntu 18.04 system, "man sh" brings up the dash man page.

Thanks for nothing RedHat & Apple!

It is far simpler to just learn the POSIX shell first - much shorter man page. The the Bash stuff is then just a few additions if you ever need them (other shells are available).

I bet you can't back up a single one of your claims. Are you actually qualified to make them?

Dark matter is NOT the same thing as dark energy.
m4r35n357··on Ask HN: Are books worth it?
There were books before the internet, and they do not go obsolete so they will outlast anything on the internet.

Books can really belong to you rather than a hardware device.

. . . but only if it _works_, which is the point I was making.

Should I have said "physicists"?
m4r35n357··on Giant magnetic ropes seen in Whale Galaxy's halo
OK you don't sound convinced; let's try another way of putting it. If it were any use, scientists would be using it. They are very practical like that.

He is saying that the only people who preach about the "electric universe" are non-scientists. It really isn't unclear.

I can highly recommend Susskind's free continuing education lectures at Stanford https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQrxduI9Pds1fm91Dmn8x... I've done the classical mechanics, special & general relativity series, can't comment on the quantum stuff, but I hear he has some sort of track record in it.

Using the word "attack" as if I've mortally wounded someone is pretty disingenuous.

BTW, thanks for inviting me not to contribute.

While we are both here, if you are not aware of this paper it might give you a giggle (3500th order simulations on a supercomputer): https://arxiv.org/abs/1305.4222

They simulated Lorenz reliably up to 10000 time units; I managed 1400 units using MPFR on my NUC using my own code (500th order, took about 13 hours!).

m4r35n357··on Interactive Lorenz Attractor
Erm, sure I know that name from somewhere! I won't dispute your claims about alternative methods, but I've found it hard to find any open documentation about this stuff, so I am unaware of it myself. Then again, I hereby announce that I am an _amateur_ at this, so I'm not taking criticism personally!

In fact one of the reasons I wrote my stuff (FWIW in c and Python) is because I couldn't follow the code in TaylorIntegration.jl ;) My stuff is _really_ simple, and I know _exactly_ how it works.

m4r35n357··on Interactive Lorenz Attractor
High order means much less dependence on step size. Automatic (exact) differentiation means no roundoff from finite differences with small step size. They use a very clever and involved code generation approach, I have just hardcoded the recurrences in my implementation (much simpler). https://github.com/m4r35n357/ODE-Playground

It is not a black box approach like RK4, it depends on the model using a (hardly at all) restricted set of functions. Piecewise definitions are OK though.

m4r35n357··on Interactive Lorenz Attractor
Cheers but I already have my own solver, by implementing this approach https://projecteuclid.org/euclid.em/1120145574 ;) Just wondering though . . .
