m4lvin··on Lenses
Funny coincidence. Yesterday I watched the talk by SPJ about Lenses and it finally clicked for me :-)

https://skillsmatter.com/skillscasts/4251-lenses-composition...

Maybe someone has an actual public link to this with no login needed?

edit: thanks for the subcomment! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-QwBL9Dia0

What if I do not have a google account?

Why is this better than framadate? https://framadate.org/

m4lvin··on SnappyMail – Modern, lightweight and fast web-based email client
Related: RainLoop (of which SnappyMail is a fork) seems to be no longer developed and has a known stored XSS problem: https://blog.sonarsource.com/rainloop-emails-at-risk-due-to-...

SnappyMail is not affected by this and seems to be the successor.

m4lvin··on Show HN: I am building a free version of Strava
I wish there would be a self-hosted fediverse version for the community features of strava. Luke Picciau has built PikaTrack, but not edited it in the last two years. Still, maybe this is some useful inspiration if you intend to extend your app in the community features direction:

m4lvin··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
There are sane email providers who do exactly this, for example Posteo — see question "Is there a spam folder" here: https://posteo.de/en
m4lvin··on Can you be sure to clear a line at Tetris?
Is there a good way to reduce SAT or other decision problems to Tetris? Do we need to enlarge the grid to reduce larger problem instances, or can the duration of the play / length of the sequence be used for that?

I would hope for something like "This list of clauses is satisfiable iff there is a winning strategy to clear at least N lines when given the following sequence of tetrominoes". (Where the article here says that there is no hope for anything like this with N=1, but )

Or does knowing the whole sequence in advance make any sequence easy to play / clear any number of lines?

m4lvin··on Git security vulnerability announced
I assume the patch will be backported and there will be a point release .30.? including it, but bullseye will probably sticks with 2.30.

However, you can use bullseye-backports to get 2.34.1 if you want: See https://packages.debian.org/git

Edit: None of the debian versions have the patch yet: https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2022-24765

m4lvin··on My Mathematics PhD research workflow: LaTeX notes and instant pdf referencing
PDFs can already contain videos and JavaScript. But given the security problems, I consider it a feature of most non-Adobe PDF viewers to not support that.
m4lvin··on W3M Rocks
One example: When I open this page here, in eww all comments have the same left margin and I have no idea what is a reply to what, but with emacs-w3m the nesting structure is visible.
m4lvin··on New EU law could require iMessage and WhatsApp to work with other platforms
Why? (Note that the idea is to force the big players to allow interop with small ones, but small startups are not forced to do anything.)
m4lvin··on Random number generator enhancements for Linux 5.17 and 5.18
I first assumed it was a PDF and when I got to the video thought "Wait, browsers do video-in-pdf now?"
m4lvin··on Osm.el – OpenStreetMap Viewer for Emacs
This works great, in particular on the Purism Librem 5 :-)
m4lvin··on Ask HN: Alternatives to 1Password
Pass is the best! As an alternative to the git sync you can also sync via nextcloud or syncthing :-)

m4lvin··on Gitlab is down
It is updated by now - some seconds delay is fine I think and if they would not cache the status page it might go down in a blink now too ;-)

m4lvin··on XMPP: The secure communication protocol that respects privacy
I have my own XMPP server ;-) and I understand the underlying problem here. I mostly wanted to point out that for a new person to quickly try out Movim this might be a stumbling block. As another comment suggested using something like OAuth to smooth this out might help.
m4lvin··on XMPP: The secure communication protocol that respects privacy
I wanted to try it out, but this is annoying:

- registration happens on https://api.movim.eu/register and firefox provides me a way to generate a password and save it linked to that domain.

- now I want to log in at https://mov.im/?login but firefox has no idea that it should use my api.movim.eu account for that.

Get a nice bicycle.
m4lvin··on Xsnow
Wonderful.

But why does snow not stick on Electron windows? Are they ghosts!?

m4lvin··on Essential security for Linux servers (2013)
I think most consoles that cloud providers offer are attached via virtual serial consoles (ttys) and not via SSH. So you can disable passwords for SSH but still use them via the cloud provider remote console.

At least for KVM based virtual servers that I have this is the case.

m4lvin··on Show HN: P2P remote desktop – an alternative to TeamViewer / AnyDesk
For those wanting a simple Linux alternative: If you have SSH access as the same user as the one running the X11 session on the remote host, you can do this:

    ssh -v -L 5900:localhost:5900 user@remotehost 'DISPLAY=":0" xterm -e "x11vnc -localhost"'
And then

    krdc vnc://localhost
or whatever VNC client you like.

For linux-to-linux this has replaced TeamViewer for me, together with zerotier.com for getting through NAT.

m4lvin··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
