m4lvin··on Typst, a new markup-based typesetting system, is now open source
Ah, thanks for the correction, this is even better :-)
m4lvin··on We updated our RSA SSH host key
Well, that would be something to show in the "Latest changes" in the top right corner on github.com after login, right? But no, I have to go here to read about it.

It is also not mentioned on https://www.githubstatus.com/ aka status.github.com.

> i.e. phi instead of \phi or floor instead of \floor. You will inevitably run into situations where, for instance, you want to write the letters phi, and have to resort to some ugly hack to write the natural language.

I thought exactly the same: What if I want to write the product of f,l,o,o,r? Well, the "ugly hack" is explained in the readme: You just write "floor" with quotes instead of floor. Seems alright to me ;-)

m4lvin··on Curl 8.0.1
Tried to leave a friendly comment, but apparently the database is hugged to death...

m4lvin··on Microsoft Designer
Interesting example. Do you remember the name of the 4 frame series of paintings of Rome?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alte_Pinakothek

m4lvin··on I replaced grub with systemd-boot
EFISTUB can also be done on Debian [1]. I used this for a while, but it felt too fragile and inconvenient:

- the same disk is now impossible/harder to boot in another system/mainboard.

- no more choice between different kernels in case the newest one broke something

- to change the cmdline with kenel parameters you now need to run efibootmgr

Still, the quick boot can be worth it :-)

m4lvin··on ArxivGPT: Chrome extension that summarizes arxived research papers using ChatGPT
The extension here does not include an API key. You either need to log in using an account or provide your own API key in its settings.
m4lvin··on Chromium's impact on root DNS traffic (2020)
Wait, I thought the check here is first done with random strings, and only if those return NXDOMAIN as expected, then the real search entries that might be hostnames are sent to your configured DNS server (and only after pressing enter).
m4lvin··on Sourcehut will blacklist the Go module mirror
Ah, not sure I understand then. Would it still need one counter, or rather a flag "has been cloned by google in last 24h" for each go module?
m4lvin··on Sourcehut will blacklist the Go module mirror
I thought that too, but then sr.ht needs to keep state which IP made how many requests already, and as the post mentions google makes these requests from many different places. So they would have to count requests from the specific user agent and by that point it is again special purpose work and load on sr.ht (whereas general rate limiting per IP might be a good idea anyway).
m4lvin··on EmailTriager
But wait, I assumed that is actually what it does after you give it access to your email account? (Which us yet another reason I will not touch it with a stick.)
m4lvin··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
The internet also says that even Gahndi did not exactly say this ;)
m4lvin··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
Note that Mastodon is third in the list. I consider that a success.

1. They ignore you. 2. They laugh at you. 3. They fight you. <<<--- we are here. 4. You win.

m4lvin··on Google introduces end-to-end encryption for Gmail on the web
What is the difference between end-to-end- and point-to-point-encrypted?
m4lvin··on Htmx in a Nutshell
How does error handling work? If I try to replace the content of some div with a reply I get using htmx, but the request fails or times out etc., what content is then put into the div? What if the reply is not valid HTML?

Sorry for the newb and lazy questions.

m4lvin··on Show HN: I made a pretty relaxing puzzle game
Or use scroll-up and scroll-down to rotate left/right?
m4lvin··on The first minute of every phone call is torture now
That must be the Google Dialer app. The one in LineageOS which I guess comes from AOSP is perfectly fine and never bothers me about anything. Come to the dark side! ;-)
m4lvin··on reMarkable 2
I just type "pdf2remarkable.sh whatever.pdf" in my terminal and it's done. Using a variant of this script:

m4lvin··on TOTP tokens on my wrist with the smartest dumb watch
Not for PineTime, but the bangle.js has a a 2FA TOTP app: https://banglejs.com/apps/?id=authentiwatch

For InfiniTime (the PineTime firmware), here is the issue/discussion about it: https://github.com/InfiniTimeOrg/InfiniTime/issues/310

m4lvin··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
QKSMS is so good I almost forgot that I am using it.

m4lvin··on Wikipedia is not short on cash
Side note: No VPN needed, the video is not gebolocked, at least ffrom NL.
m4lvin··on Canonical shows ads in the Ubuntu CLI
This is not coming from motd, but part of the apt output.
m4lvin··on Eierlegende Wollmilchsau (2011)
Is "sow" really a word for pig? Or did they just want something that sounds like the German "Sau"?

Also, when print-scan-copy-all-in-one devices were a new thing, I liked to call them Eierlegende Wollmilchsau. Any other devices that come to mind?

m4lvin··on Get things done with Emacs
Any reason you use syncthing-fork for that and not the original? I think mine syncs fine even on mobile data. Sometimes I turn on ZeroTier doing the same job as Tailscale/WireGuard, but syncthing seems to work already without that.
m4lvin··on Get things done with Emacs
Which app did you try? I use Orgzly http://www.orgzly.com/ for getting the agenda on my phone and for small edits. And whenever I want the full experience I run a real emacs on my phone in Termux.

For syncing I use Syncthing.

m4lvin··on Ask HN: Why is Microsoft Teams still so bad?
This!

Another example: In Germany (or maybe whenever the system language is German) Microsoft decided that everyone should have a ferris wheel and a brezel in their task bar because now it is Oktoberfest in Munich. Seriously? I think we have reached spam-as-an-operating-system.

m4lvin··on Betterbird: a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird
I think the new feature is that Betterbird can send a HTML-only email, without any plain text version. Or can you do that in Thunderbird already?

(In my opinion, this is not a feature but a bug. HTML-only emails are evil.)

m4lvin··on Why none of my books are available on Audible
Cory is sometimes crowdfounding his audiobooks, see the campaign for "Attack Surface" some time ago.
m4lvin··on Show HN: A VNC viewer for eInk devices capable of 30 FPS when writing text
I did this once, with a shared terminal via screen or tmux (and thus not VNC). You can install https://github.com/Eeems-Org/oxide and a terminal application via the toltec repoitories and then ssh (or mosh) from remarkable to the device that has the keyboard.
m4lvin··on The only true answer to “Tabs vs. spaces”
Still depends on the language and compiler conventions. In Haskell/GHC tabs will give you a warning ;-)
