m3talsmith··on # [derive(Clone)] Is Broken
Just looking at the examples, you can tell that they wouldn't compile: the other structs passed in don't derive the trait as well, nor implement it. It's really simple, not broken.
m3talsmith··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
Whelp, that's one less application that I feel compelled to make
m3talsmith··on What would happen if we didn't use TCP or UDP?
Definitely the most likely
m3talsmith··on We're forking Flutter
The developer could use the cupertino framework for iOS releases, but usually choose not to.
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: Am I dead meat already?
46 here and broadly experienced across multiple stacks. My last job ended 3 months ago and the market has been rough in the US at least. I struggle to get interviews. It’s not just you.
m3talsmith··on Reading more Ursula Le Guin (2019)
I have a hard copy of this one. Definitely a favorite!
m3talsmith··on Willow Protocol
There are at least two implementations there on that page:

- One in typescript - One in rust

m3talsmith··on For many home-schoolers, parents are no longer doing the teaching
I was homeschooled back in the 90’s and it was all on me to teach myself. Have things really changed?
m3talsmith··on Tell HN: Digikey has 1822 Pi4 8GB and 3793 1GB in stock
Thanks! Ordered
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
I just had my first week last week. Took a startup first engineer position and I’m not regretting it!
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: What would you do if given a sabbatical?
I would work for a decentralized platform and a video game that would run on it. The platform and the video game work hand in hand and have been planned since 1996, but I’ve never had enough time.
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: Are hackerspaces still relevant today?
Hacker spaces are the most relevant, when tech crashes are happening or tech hype is high: it’s important to have a community of people to simply hack with; to lean on each other in comradeship; to learn from; to teach. Hope comes from this.
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: How do I stop flip-flopping an important decision?
This may seem useless, but stop questioning yourself: make a choice, wrong or right, and stick with it. Making a choice, and learning to work around the consequences, is one of the most important character building events you will ever experience. Make a choice, resolve to stick through it no matter what.
m3talsmith··on YouTube Says It Is Gaining on TikTok in Short-Video Race
My kids say otherwise…
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: Why does WWDC get 10x more views than Google I/O?
AltaVista was absolutely great! I got way more interesting content through them! Their death was a real loss that finally forced me to use Google, and not for the better.
m3talsmith··on Tell HN: Laptop Hardware Designers): Put USB-C on Top of Screen
I would NEVER want a setup like you are proposing. Those are awful ergonomic!
m3talsmith··on Tell HN: I'm Afraid We're Shutting Down
The great resignation was mostly about us who could survive a paycheck or two, leveraging the chaos to demand our value: if the current employer wouldn’t pay it, others would. We didn’t hesitate to move and make the previous employer pay for their neglect of us.
m3talsmith··on Programming in the Apocalypse
Mindless distraction is exactly what you turn to when your efforts to better your life become too monumental to bear: lifespans shorten because destitution drives people to apathy or an open desire for suicide.
m3talsmith··on Programming in the Apocalypse
Exactly. Rust is actually a loser in this due to the lack of a fleshed out stdlib.
m3talsmith··on As a software engineer, what is the biggest problem you face to land a job?
I have extreme test anxiety (part of my anxiety disorder). Even as a software engineer of 25+ years, I still fail live code tests more frequently than I like. I’m just happy that I don’t have to take them often.
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: What is the best programming book you've read?
1. Why’s Poignant Guide to Ruby

2. Practical Common Lisp

3. A Programmer’s Introduction to Mathematics

4. Data Structures and Programming Design in C

5. The Art of Agent Oriented Modeling

m3talsmith··on The chip shortage keeps getting worse – why can't we just make more?
In the US, doing the latter is a tax write off and perhaps enough to give you a stimulus.
m3talsmith··on Why I rewrote my Rust keyboard firmware in Zig: consistency, mastery, and fun
I agree. I’ve been developing with Rust since pre 1.0. I call developing in Rust, developing by guess work (or where to put the next clone(), unwrap(), Box<>). It’s nearly impossible to write without the analyzer giving you hints along the way. The only fun I experience is the joy of finally getting the compiler to pass.

So, I’ve seriously been considering designing a language with the same assurances, but with different mechanics. One that is easier to learn and use due to the consistency of syntax patterns used across the breadth and depth of it.

m3talsmith··on I Really Blew It (2020)
You are not getting it right: he specifically excludes himself from the category of genius. What he bemoans is the languishing of his ideas and posits that, despite the several interests in them and efforts to fulfill said interests, the timing may be wrong for them to be taken up.
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: What is your low stress, high paid job?
Agreed with the settling lower down on the ladder. I’ve been all the way up (CTO) and found it be too stressful. I prefer to stay in engineering and not moving back into management.
m3talsmith··on Ask HN: What is your low stress, high paid job?
Senior Software Engineer and Team Lead for a Analytics Contractor. Pretty highly paid.

I put together teams around projects, mentor juniors, and build cross project teams to fix architectural problems. My favorite part is actually teaching juniors and watching them grow. I live for that!

My advice is to find a niche that you love and stay away from industries that stress you out. There are a ton of different sub industries in SWE.

I would definitely stay clear of startups if you don’t handle stress well: startups and failing companies are the worst and for the same reason – they are both in a financial free fall trying to gain a new lease on life.

m3talsmith··on Show HN: Falldown – A game rendered in web console
Fun and holy crap, addicting!
m3talsmith··on tilde.town: A social network over SSH
I learned a lot of basic Linux through the same shell provider back in the day!
m3talsmith··on tilde.town: A social network over SSH
We have cli based games, an internal irc, federated mail, etc. It's a fun community.
m3talsmith··on tilde.town: A social network over SSH
Hey! Miirc here! I really have to get my plant back up and running. Plant, RIP.

You've done a great job with the community. Thanks for all you do!
