m3mpp··on Google Tried to Patent My Work After a Job Interview
Reminds me that anecdote, not sure who it was, he was wondering where are the Caesars or the Hitlers of our time, all that brand of ambitious, manipulative and dominant personalities. The answer, he found, was that nowadays those people are absorbed into corporate instead of going into politics.
m3mpp··on Ask HN: Experienced programmers, how do you learn new language?
Well, not your fault, most of the resources out there are just made to make a buck, or a click, it's pretty much hopeless nowadays. What I do usually is I try to find used books, they're cheap and often better. Doesn't work for all subjects obviously.

For C++, I'd download a working draft of the standard, that + examples on stackoverflow will teach you more than a 6 foot stacks of the latest books on the subject.

m3mpp··on Ask HN: How to stop being cynical all the time?
Yes, half a joke, also a quote from Don Draper in Madmen. Great cynic character :)
m3mpp··on Ask HN: How to stop being cynical all the time?

m3mpp··on Why There Will Never Be Another RedHat: The Economics of Open Source (2014)
Looks like 1917 russian revolution to me... no, thank you.
m3mpp··on 'Human brain' supercomputer with 1M processors switched on for first time
"Conservatives are anti-science": no downvote. "Liberals are anti-biology": downvote.

HN is funny...

m3mpp··on Ask HN: How did you manage your stress or recover from depression?
exercise, a lot of walk in parks, daily and also when feeling in "hell" during the day, and also developing a spirituality, very important to find a way to deal with the bigger questions...
m3mpp··on Ask HN: Best robust laptop for everyday software development
Thinkpad E560 owner here, bought it a couple of years ago for less than $500 on newegg, installed ubuntu on it and that's it. Dropped it a few times, and work like 8-10 hours a day on it, never had any issue. Solid.
m3mpp··on 'Mindful people' feel less pain
Pain is also linked to fear, so more mindfulness, less fear and less pain. Some people, while physically training can inflict extreme pains on their bodies, but without any fear whatsoever, so they're ok, even enjoying it for some, "working hard!"
m3mpp··on Ask HN: Fake résumé generator
"The game is hard so I cheated!" Do you think it's a good way to start a business relationship?
m3mpp··on Ask HN: I'm 40 this year, and have depression. Any words of wisdom?
Religion/spirituality is a great asset, especially as we get older.
m3mpp··on EU to recommend that member states abolish daylight saving time
Of course, the European political instances don't care at all about the effect of their laws so it's easier...
m3mpp··on A majority of US teens are taking steps to limit smartphone and social media use
> 57% say they’re trying to limit social media usage and 58% are trying to limit video games.

I think 98% of US teens are trolling polls...

m3mpp··on Ask HN: Should I should switch my career path to coding after 27?
As you said, the first level is the language syntax, var, control flow etc. Second level, data structures, list and list comprehension, dictionaries etc. Third level, recursion and algorithms, or how to solve problems in python, what you'll often see it referred as "the pythonic way".

Don't be too academic with these that it becomes boring, but just enough that you start feeling comfortable building some small console apps, that can read and write files, crawl some pages from the web, that kind of thing.

Once you're good with that, you can start with frameworks. The danger you want to avoid is to start too soon, and have a hard time separating the complexities of the language with the ones from the framework.

m3mpp··on An introduction to the Julia language, part 1
Looks very interesting, any known drawback, maturity, package available, anything?
m3mpp··on An introduction to the Julia language, part 1
Yes, I've read it breifly, it's a good description but I always prefer human feedback, with languages, the devil is in the details :)
m3mpp··on An introduction to the Julia language, part 1
What is the language lineage? Is it functional or imperative? Dynamic or statically typed? Garbage collected or not? I wish every introduction to a new language would contain that kind of info, it'd be so much more informative.

Edit: missed one, natively compiled or VM based.

m3mpp··on Ask HN: Should I should switch my career path to coding after 27?
Of course you should, you're gonna live a good additional 50 years, do you want to spend them doing something you don't like?

Python is good language to start, concentrate on that first and keep js for later, it's a complex language that may confuse you more than anything else.

Mix theory and practice, learn and build console apps, avoid web dev for now, you don't want to confuse yourself with all the web framework stuff. Your goal at that point should be to learn the language and how to think like a software dev, not learning some apis or frameworks.

27 is a good age to learn, technologies are always changing so, even at that age, you can learn and become an expert at something, and after a few years, nobody will ask you for how long you've done it.

m3mpp··on How Netflix outsmarted everyone else in TV
The whole streaming industry is a joke. It's like fast food for the brain, and I include HBO in it. Where are the documentaries, where are the interviews, there are so many good stuff to watch out there, why the only thing available on all those services is junk, stupid nonsense fiction? I include amazon in that critic.

>For what reason do you dislike autoplay?

Because it doesn't bring anything but distraction. If I want it to play, I can click, if I want to browse, I don't need a preview. Most of their movies is shit anyway so why would I need to preview them?

> It's admittedly not the best but certainly no worse than any other streaming service

Amazon is way better, both on their app and website.

EDIT: amazon (prime) is better for the search, content wise, it's the same poor selection of violent movies and idiotic documentaries.

m3mpp··on How Netflix outsmarted everyone else in TV
man, only in this world, second rate movies, shitty shows, stupid functionalities like autoplay, they don't even have a decent search...
m3mpp··on Ask HN: What are some of the best life hacks you use?
Could be a sterilization thing, or he's full of crap :)
m3mpp··on The Story of Why I Left Riot Games
The drama is the blog post, the length, the minute details of everything, like if it was so big, so important. It's just a guy who said a stupid joke. If you feel so strongly, confront him for real, not with a bland "it's a problem" and then write a 5000 words blog post about it. Go tell him he's a piece of shit, something the guy could actually use to adjust his behavior. My 2 cents.
m3mpp··on The Story of Why I Left Riot Games
Not sure where you're going with that, but anyway. If someone is an ass, confront him, don't quit and go whining on your blog trying to look good, is all I'm saying.
m3mpp··on The Story of Why I Left Riot Games
There's standing up for your value and there's drama. This is drama. This is "look at how good I am". You stand up for your values by going to the guy and tell him "you're an asshole for joking about that, and since I don't work for assholes, I'm gone". That is standing up for your values. Don't you think?
m3mpp··on The Story of Why I Left Riot Games
From virtue signaling to virtue resigning. I wonder what's the next step, virtue self-immolation?

Let's keep giving berth to that kind of sensitivity in the work place and very soon, all the people will be exactly the same, bland, smooth, completely passive people.

The creative, the geniuses of this world are always full of spikes, full of defects, against the norm. Well, I guess we will just have to do without them from now on...

m3mpp··on Ask HN: What's NH's opinion of the next big thing in tech?
Are those real stats or guess?
m3mpp··on The Making of Prince of Persia (2011) [pdf]
To me it's a mystery how one can sustain an effort for so long and not losing faith along the way and throw everything through the window... I know it's tenacity that wins the race in the end, but still, it's always impressive to read those stories.
m3mpp··on Anyway, stop recommending bazookas to kill flies in programming
Then stop web development all together. Web dev is the story of using a bazooka to kill flies...
m3mpp··on The Approval Economy
I don't know, reminds me a lot of that old concept: we are a combination of 3 things, who we are, who we think we are and who we want to be. I can't find any reference to it, but to me it seems more accurate than the article explanation about the "better version of oneself".
m3mpp··on The Bitter Regrets of a Useless Chinese Daughter
You have this same problem as non-chinese or as non-daughter (son). It's the issue of living far away from your parents and family, they get old, sick and will die at some point and you can't do much, besides feeling guilt and frustration. Whether your family is in China, Europe or wherever, same feeling.
