m33k44··on Ask HN: What prompted you to convert from non-vegetarian to vegetarian?
> lentils give me digestive problems

There are different types of lentils, the most protein heavy is called "toor daal", the one you get in restaurant dishes because it tastes good but is difficult to digest; the most light on the gut is "moog daal" because, compared to toor daal, it has less protein, with just little less "tasty".

> I liked tofu

Also try soya chunks for protein.

m33k44··on Ask HN: What prompted you to convert from non-vegetarian to vegetarian?
> having found a great alternative that I enjoy.

Please would you mind sharing what the great alternative is?

m33k44··on Ask HN: What prompted you to convert from non-vegetarian to vegetarian?
> I had to adjust my gut biome using antibiotics (non-systemic).

Overuse of antibiotics is not a good thing. If you want to gradually reduce antibiotics then I would recommend adding curd, natural yogurt, buttermilk and home made butter(a by-product of making buttermilk) to your diet. Curd and buttermilk can be made at home so that also reduces cost. I would recommend home made, because the ones available in the market are mostly made with milk powder instead of fresh milk.

Also try to eat nuts like almond, cashew, groundnuts, wet dates and raisin soaked in water. Keep a handful of these mixed in a bowl of water at night and eat it the next morning.

Also increase the portion of non-leafy vegetables(compared to leafy vegetables) in the diet and stop eating bakery products.

And don't eat uncooked vegetables in the name of salad.

And, during excretion prefer squatting instead of default commode style.

And finally, do pranayam(yoga) every morning; helps a lot with both mental and gut well-being.

m33k44··on Ask HN: Should having just political borders and no social borders help?
It actually is counter intuitive, but removing social borders will actually reduce immigration! Here is why, people don't like to leave their motherland unless the situation gets bad. Most people migrate to the countries that have exploited them in some way. E.g. most people from former UK colonies will migrate to the UK, most people from Mexico, south america and China will migrate to the US(Indians started migrating during the cold war, when there was massive pressure on India from the west). Most african countries will migrate to France, and from the recent events most middle-eastern citizens(Iraq, Syria, Libiya and Afghanistan) have migrated to europe and the US, etc. If there is free movement of people, then there is more pressure on the recipient countries to not get into the exploiting expeditions where people from both the recipient country and the target country suffer. That way people from the target countries are less likely to travel to other countries. They will travel only when they require it and most of them would like to go back to their home country(if it is not messed up).
m33k44··on Milton Friedman: Money and Inflation
With so much QE done over the last decades, I am wondering, after watching this video, what is going to happen to inflation!
m33k44··on Ask HN: Why does everyone keep suggesting teenagers to get a girlfriend?
This question applies to the west and not to the east.

I remember, when I first moved to the west, I was staying with an European family. The husband-wife duo were so tensed for weeks that their 17 year old son did not have a girlfriend! This was new to me. They finally relaxed when he went with a girl for dinner one day :)

In the east(at least in India) the saying is "Pehele naukri, phir chokri" meaning, "First job/income, then girl". Almost all parents(and also the society) expects that guys/girls first have decent education and foundation to get a job/income. And then they can think of cuckooing.

So, I don't understand where are you getting your signals from when you say "everyone" and who your target audience is.

m33k44··on Covid-19 may have killed nearly 3M in India, far more than official counts show
India desperately needs a public institution like the NHS of the UK!

Few years ago my father died of ILD(Interstitial Lung Disease), as per the doctors. I had my doubts about the diagnosis, but I had no where to go to for second opinion. There is a private hospital syndicate in every city of India; no hospital goes against other hospitals in the same city; they will cover each others back because most of the hospitals have the same "consulting doctors". They just loot the patient's relatives by prescribing same drug but from different manufacturer. And if they realise that the patient is going to die, then the family members are pressured to take the patient home or elsewhere, this is to avoid "death count" on their register. I was literally asked to take my father home the day he died suggesting that "take him home, we will provide the ambulance and he will die on the way home so it won't be on anyone of us!"

The medicine profession in India is not just joke, it is inhumane and lacks any value for humanity.

India should have looked at some of the European countries when setting up it's healthcare, education and news media policy. Unfortunately the country has copied verbatim everything in this regard from the US!

m33k44··on Ultraconserved words point to deep language ancestry across Eurasia (2013)
> For me, ancient Chinese civilization is so interesting in large part because of how isolated it is.

For the Europeans this might be true, but not for the Indians. There was lot of exchange between Indus and Chinese civilisations. How do you think Buddhism reached China?

m33k44··on Ask HN: Is decentralized password/private key recovery possible?
Users usual enter low entropy passwords. By stretching I mean a step to make a user entered password into high entrropy password.
m33k44··on Ask HN: Is decentralized password/private key recovery possible?
I am a noob in this field, but is there some way to do the following:

0. User provides a password.

1. The system stretches this password.

2. A private key is derived from the stretched password.

3. A public key is derived from the private key.

Is this possible?

m33k44··on Ask HN: Is there any way one can connect independetly to the Internet?
It is not possible. Digital communication falls under national security for a country. You could do anything(within limits) within the bounds of a country, but all the digital communication that flows in and out of a country is built in such a way that the government can control it if required even if it is operated by private players.

m33k44··on Ask HN: What should I learn to build side-projects in AR or VR?
If you are a web-developer, then A-frame framework is the easiest route.

BTW, where are you based?

m33k44··on Ask HN: Any experienced C++ developer willing to work on some side-project?
> Are you experienced looking just for someone to work with a little?

I would describe myself as middle-weight developer. Not an expert, but can work with C++ without having nightmares.

> Or are you looking to work with someone with more experience to mentor you through a project or what's the goal?

To work on something where we can proudly say that we built it. And along the way make friend(s) for life. If there is mentorship on the sidelines from others then I wouldn't mind being corrected.

> You looking for something more server based, desktop or embedded or ?

Shouldn't matter. C++ developers do pickup any domain quickly and with ease. If one does not know certain part of the domain then s/he, being experienced, should be able to quickly ramp-up.

> Understanding some framing of expectations/ideas might help you find the right type of people.

I don't have any specific idea(and expectation, apart from working on something tangible and making friend(s)), so open to discussing and bouncing ideas across.

> I might be interested depending on the situation and expectations.

Then let us connect and find out. As mentioned earlier, the only aim is to produce something tangible and make friend(s). There is no other expectation.

m33k44··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
> the lowest-end devices lack positional tracking for both the headset and the controllers

That is the reason I am excited about ZapBox and AR4E headsets. Both promise support for interaction using controllers.

> So as far as I can tell the category seems like a dead-end at this point, it doesn't seem to be receiving substantial software or hardware investment and will likely disappear altogether as positional tracking gets cheaper.

If that happens, then it will be a shame. We need lot of low-cost headsets for XR to proliferate. Otherwise it will remain a niche market.

> In contrast FB is launching a $150M fund specifically for VR educational content

One of the things I am trying to avoid is vendor-lockin.

> So I guess it depends on what your time horizon is - I'd just be aware that any investments into designing software for 3DOF systems are likely to depreciate pretty quickly.

Hence planning to use open source software and standard APIs as much as possible e.g. Godot engine, Vulkan Scene Graph, Monado, OpenXR complaint API etc.

> there's a video there (and a sign up to get a free copy when the beta launches!).

I am not able to see video. I am using Firefox 93 x86_64 on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS.

Are you a designer or a software engineer?

m33k44··on Ask HN: Any experienced C++ developer willing to work on some side-project?
I was talking about side-project and not a job :)

There are few threads: "Who is hiring?", "Who wants to be hired?" and "Freelancer? Seeking freelancer?" that you can ckeck for full-time jobs.

m33k44··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
> Have you decided on a specific idea or are you interested in the space generally?

Thinking of developing educational content and digital twin in the related domain.

> Right now the greatest number of users and app sales seems to be at the low-ish end but not absolute low end ($300 Quest)

Those would be the gamers. But I am targeting students. And not many students can afford high-end devices. I am more interested in devices such as Google Cardboard, Zapbox and AR4E. High cost of devices should not become a roadblock for educational content distribution.

> Of course I could imagine exceptions here, so apologies in advance if you have some specific application in mind where the above factors aren't important.

I am thinking of developing educational content using Space exploration as a theme. Some applications that I have in mind will require interaction and collaboration. So a set of ZapBox and CloudXR is the ideal combination. But to start with I will use Google Cardboard.

BTW, what are you working on?

m33k44··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Thinking of working on something related to AR/VR but the target device will be low-cost such as google cardboard.
m33k44··on Ask HN: Do you refuse to work for certain companies or industries?
I have not consciously done so, but whenever recruiters have called me for positions within finance sector I was never able to give a firm commitment to applying in that sector. I have made quite a monetary loss because of that. I don't know why I do that. May be because I was never comfortable working in big cities and in those high rise glass buildings. I prefer country side living and non-flashy offices that do not destroy the surroundings. And I prefer walking to office. Living in bigger cities robs you of that luxury.

m33k44··on Ask HN: Can world-changing industries still emerge from garages?
Yes, it can be. There are three paths to creating world-changing industry(none of them is simple or straight forward).

* The first path is via the garage i.e. few people coming together(either experienced or people who have no idea what they are doing) and building something they love or think others love. If they succeed, they go on to build bigger things in adjacent industries or create new industries.

* The second path is the corporate path(mostly via internal research labs). Engineers at a corporation work on a problem they or their customers are facing and then stumble upon some other solution(s) to unrelated problem to create new industries.

* The third path is via the academia where researchers spend lot of time working on unsolved or novel ideas and once they find solution to the problem, they build it themselves or license it to others.

As you can see there is still the possibility of world changing companies coming out of a garage. The only difference is the people working in the garage themselves don't know that they are building world-changing industries.

"world-changing industries" only happen in the hindsight.

m33k44··on Ask HN: Where to find other people to work on collaborative projects with you?
Sometime ago I came across a discord server(https://discord.gg/MzhGqQC). Going through their various channels, one stood out for me. The #hackathons channel that is meant for engineers to come together and hack on something interesting. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much activity. If we can use that as a starting point then we could find interesting projects to work on.
m33k44··on Ask HN: Which systems programming language(s) is/are beginner friendly?
What if a programmer wants to lean a language and not a domain? Devoid of domain, which systems programming language is easy for beginners? It will be quite an ask of a beginner to either work on embedded systems, write device driver, DB driver or compiler. So for beginners, forcing a domain from the start would be counter productive I think.
m33k44··on Ask HN: Which systems programming language(s) is/are beginner friendly?
