m1aw··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
I'm going to take your comment in good faith and assume you are just frustrated with the system.

I don't live in the US, my experience comes from the Netherlands.

I was having hard time dealling with the Covid period, and was having lots of anxiety regarding my work and proeutivy so I reached out to my GP. Talked and had sessions with 2 different psycologists over a year, both suggested to ask a referral to an ADHD specific clinic.

Since I did not want medication I never followed through. Fast forward a few years I reached out to a GP because I was thinking the ADHD "assesment" was correct. Followed up with another GP, they were super kind took my ADHD concerns seriously specially since I wanted to avoid medication first. Got referred to a psicology practice that followed me for 8 weeks, after they they also gave insurance a note that it was possible ADHD and followed me up with a different referal to a different clinic more specialized again.

So no I don't have an ADHD "certificate" to hang on the wall, but I have talked with enough professionals that think that might be the case.

m1aw··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
Okay, this is a genuine question because I was trying to avoid negative self talk.

Why did you read the message and think of negative self talk? I'm just trying to learn more about your point of view.

I was just pointing out things where I struggle.

m1aw··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
I know this pattern from myself.

I'm doing alright as far as my career goes, not great, but okay. Which is disappointing because me and everyone around thought I'd do great, because I/they thought I was a great software developer, since I'm smart and I know my tech and my programming.

Unfortunately working as a software developer is a different story entirely, I found many times that my chase for good simple code takes time, and sometimes I overthink things and I don't test properly, and I'm also slow, and don't communicate the problem with my team because I don't work consistent hours, because my brain cannot do consistency.

Turns out I have ADHD. Possibly autism too. So I understand your feelings of I just need to be better, because it works for other right? Even tho you know that fundamentally you are right, but it works for others so why not you? I don't have a solution. But sometimes you can't just "be better" and "more consistent", I also wish I could, but maybe it's not possible.

Maybe the only way is to find where we are good and do more of that. If you have struggle finishing things hope on calls with people that are good at finishing things. Talk with them. Be proactive and be open. I also don't do this as often as I should, because I'm also ashamed.

I don't know exactly what the point was to this, but so you know others also fail, even tho they deemed smart and skilled by others.

m1aw··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I'm working on this food logging app / personal health dashboard that I'm building for myself.

I was asked to log my food by a dietician I'm working with, because I was constantly feeling hunger after cycling training.

But all the solution out there were quite complex to input data, and I just want to write down plain text with some additional markup and be able to generate some graphs and recognize some patterns out it.

Decided to do it T3 and throw in all those weird technologies just to see what's out there.

m1aw··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
I started using TikTok for a couple of weeks now and started to find it fascinating, the communities that are built around the bubbles the algorithm creates are quite interesting and have discussion between themselves. It's easy to reach out to actual subject mater experts for non-technical stuff, people you wouldn't typically see on HN or Reddit.

Now does it bring __value__ to my life? No

Will I keep participating and creating content just to engage in these niche communities? Yes

m1aw··on Doctors investigate mystery brain disease in Canada
New account, publication is made by someone @vaccines.net which claims the following "We are concerned that the current outbreak of COVID-19 is actually a bioweapon attack and may be linked to the US anthrax attack of 2001, which originated from the US army base Fort Detrick."

The publication has not been peer reviewed, and quotes several times articles published by the original author with similar claims.

Are we spread miss information in HN now too?

m1aw··on Dropping the Drip: How to Get Started Making Better Coffee (2011)
I can second this, this what I usually do when I want to taste new coffees that are very expensive and I don't want to dial in. It's basically like doing a cupping with a Aeropress.

I would just some changes, water would be just out of boil (otherwise it's hard to extract light roasts), I would grind medium/medium-fine, and I would break the crust that is on top after the 3 min.

James is good, tho, that series is focused on Espresso. Other channels people might find interesting:

m1aw··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
About the logistical part. Wendover did on Youtube a really great video explaining the cold chain in international shipping and what companies are already doing to be ready for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byW1GExQB84
m1aw··on We made our SaaS home page cookie-free
Is it necessary to get consent from the user about _cfduid?

From what I understand functional cookies are excluded from the consent banner.

m1aw··on How objectivity in journalism became a matter of opinion
I read the Economist from time to time, never subscribed, but always seems to be a bit longer, trying to give some sort of opinion even if very politically unbiased then I would want.

I straight up just want to get a list of things that happened and some context information. I can do research on the topic if I find worth the time.

m1aw··on How objectivity in journalism became a matter of opinion
I have been search for quite a while for a service that I could subscribe (pay) to get a list of high quality, information dense, writing, about current world events.

I haven't yet found anything that I would be satisfied with. I looked at Substack but most journalist there seem to be basically running blogs.

m1aw··on Brazil Suspends WhatsApp Payments
But there's also other companies/services like Picpay and stuff right?
m1aw··on Norway: Soldiers' location history found in data sold by Tamoco
You don't but you could make the point that since they are not open source, you will never be sure about it.

Even if GDPR should protect against it.

m1aw··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
Really cool idea. Thanks for sharing.

I could totally see myself using this more if you added 2 options, language and game.

Also interesting would be to display not only 0 streams but also streams with <10 viewers.

It's written right there in the Specifications under Memory.

m1aw··on Half of American workers would rather work from home forever: poll
Same here, I have been struggling organising my time more then usual and since my company works as hourly I'm getting lots of anxiety, never knowing if I'm working enough or not.
m1aw··on Ask HN: What are your favorite YouTube channels to learn stuff?

* GamersNexus - Most in depth computer hardware reviews on Youtube

* Actually Hardcore Overclocking (BuildZoid) - Hardware analyses

* Todd V - Seduction / Social Skills

Ands lot's that people have already talked about like PolyMatter, Louis Rossman, Tom Scott, Brady Haran's Channels (Numberphile, Periodic Table...), and much more...

m1aw··on Playdate – A New Handheld Gaming System
Your kids aren't the target market. This is for a young or older adult who has been into gaming his entire life and wants to pay a premium for a very well game (hopefully) device with can offer a unique experience. It's somewhat of a novelty item, but I see there's definitely a market for it.

m1aw··on Diamonds Suck (2006)
This is what annoys me. The geek and idealist in me doesn't want to give her a diamond because it's not that valuable. Yet, I don't want to be cheap. I don't want her to feel like I don't value her enough.
m1aw··on Myself – v1.0.3
I feel like someone could build a game with this. Where you see the code being writen as you make your choises.

That would be super cool.

Anyway, that's an amazing job you did OP.

m1aw··on Mentors Are the Secret Weapons of Successful Startups
I think it's true in everything. Is one of the most powerful things that you can have IMO.

Having someone that went through the same that you did, and that now is helping with insight, and that tries to motivate is the key of success in anything.

This is one thing that I noticed reading biographies on successful people, they always, at some point had contact with other successful people, became truly inspired by them.

m1aw··on Whiteboard Clock
Just out of curiosity how is the ink usage, could it run for longer then a without replacing the pen or refiling the ink?

EDIT: Just saw the super interesting comment bellow linking to a reddit thread where it calculates the theoretical values of ink usage.

m1aw··on Github Student Developer Pack includes Visual Studio and Dreamspark
Is kinda of off-topic, but I might be able to get some visibility here.

I have been trying to register my "free .me domain" for a couple of days now, and is impossible, since I'm not from the US, Canda or UK. I already tried to contact Namecheap and they basically told me they couldn't do anything.

Does someone know what I should do? (other them using a fake Address and Zip-code)
