m-j-fox··on Intel to cut IoT jobs
What surprises me is $721m seems like a lot for a product no one buys. Also surprised it's not worth employing 100 people bringing in $7m/yr/head. I would employing such people.
m-j-fox··on Author of cURL denied entry to the USA
I mean, I've personally used it to access APIs from shell scripts that would have been far more maintainable in a proper Python script.
m-j-fox··on Delaney Introduces Bill to End Gerrymandering, Reform Elections
I know this one! It's the k-means algorithm.

m-j-fox··on Explain like I’m 5: Kerberos (2013)
ELI5? This is a at-least a 3rd-grade reading level and I mean at-least.

I've looked into Kerberos before. Who hasn't looked into Kerberos is the IT department at my day job. You can walk up to an open Ethernet jack, declare yourself root and access anyone's NFS.

Don't worry. All we make is security processors, the things that do the bulk encryption for the internet. No problem. Leave that source code flapping in the wind.

Here's one CPU that has nn in mind:

m-j-fox··on Georgia Tech's free math textbook collective
This is reasonable. Grinds my gears that the IEEE hoards all computer research and wants at-least $15 for a single paper no matter how interesting or inane. http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7942927/

Hey IEEE, you are doing the opposite of a service in a world created by your members. Please cease to exist.

m-j-fox··on Things that Idris improves things over Haskell
Whitespace-implied parenthesis.

    1+2 * 3 == 9
Sick! I wish Haskell notices this.
m-j-fox··on Reddit Is Raising Funds at a Valuation of $1.7B
I love Reddit, but remind me what's their business model? I've never seen an ad using Relay For Reddit. Free content is great but how do they keep the lights on much less justify $1.7 billion? (Also, HN. Servers are cheap but how do they pay dang to tell me I'm being toxic?)
m-j-fox··on Palm-sized Apple II Computer
The enclosure is the best part. So cute. How do people have so much time?
m-j-fox··on 16nm ARMv8 SoC for servers and workstations
Interesting! Cavium's network processors running bare-metal have features to ensure no core is ever idle. Maybe at the expense of latency. The idea probably doesn't translate to running a bunch of virtual servers. You probably do better with a shared-memory abstraction than a network. Or, disappointing numbers may just reflect the fact that individual cores are slow. Bad news either way.
m-j-fox··on 16nm ARMv8 SoC for servers and workstations
8 DDR channels. Seems like everyone putting 30+ cores on a chip needs to learn this lesson. Memory bandwidth is the bottleneck. Intel uses HBM stacked on the Xeon Phi. Anyone who has the capability should do likewise or maybe try 8 DDR channels, pin count be damned.
m-j-fox··on Things that Idris improves things over Haskell
Depressing thing to Google. Seems like an interesting project that couldn't keep it's funding in volatile times. It might have been Swift or F# if developed at a better company.
m-j-fox··on Elon Musk Publishes Plans for Colonizing Mars
Yes.
m-j-fox··on Elon Musk Publishes Plans for Colonizing Mars
Don't forget the 3 million acres of farmland you need to support your 1 million city folk. We might be able to breed radiation-resistant corn -- not so confident about radiation-resistant chickens. The martians will all be vegan. Good for them.
m-j-fox··on Elon Musk Publishes Plans for Colonizing Mars
And then you have to hope for soil that is not itself radioactive. Lots of soil on earth contains radon, but I don't know about soil on mars.
m-j-fox··on Things that Idris improves things over Haskell
No but tell me if you remember.
m-j-fox··on Things that Idris improves things over Haskell
I know clang will not let you make a mistake, but it must be some kluge since the C language clearly doesn't anticipate that.
m-j-fox··on Amazon to Acquire Whole Foods for $13.7B
You're kidding, right? Programmers are decently paid but should strike for a 40-hour work week.
m-j-fox··on Why Does Microsoft Still Offer a 32-bit OS?
Question: why did Firefox ask if it was allowed to "take and record video" on this page?!?
m-j-fox··on Thursday night Mountain View power outage the result of a drone crash
I mean, hopefully the bird-proofing on those planes is enough to keep a drone from stopping the engine. Otherwise we need to outlaw birds.
m-j-fox··on Thursday night Mountain View power outage the result of a drone crash
My office is pretty-much on the runway of SJC and the vacant lot next door is a favorite for lunchtime RC enthusiasts.
m-j-fox··on Options vs. Cash
Be careful with those golden handcuffs: they only work if everyone thinks they're real. A bad quarter or even a bad rumor can prompt staff to bail en masse.
m-j-fox··on Options vs. Cash
> Equity compensation attracts employees with that mindset. Conversely, if a potential employee would prefer all cash compensation to equity, that would be a big red flag to me.

But that says a lot more about you than it does about them. Everyone is different and judging from this thread, many believe equity is bullshit for reasons unrelated to their work ethic or team spiritedness.

m-j-fox··on Electric vehicles reached 2M cars in 2016
I paid for my Volt with some oil rights I inherited. Sure, I'm way net carbon polluting on that deal. But the Volt is sweet.
m-j-fox··on Did the Intercept bungle the NSA leak?
Wow Windows. You've outdone yourself. Can I assume Linux and Mac are safe?
m-j-fox··on Did the Intercept bungle the NSA leak?
> pretty standard fare for a corporate firewall/proxy

It is? So corporations install something that infects your laptop and updates the root certificate every time Chrome or Firefox updates? Sounds extreme to me. Something the NSA might be able to do, but hopefully not my company.

m-j-fox··on Did the Intercept bungle the NSA leak?
Seriously, go read her twitter. That's what gets my tinfoil hatting. She sounds like a mid-range bot. Her account runs from Oct 2016 to Feb 2017. She only has one mode and its Trump sucks.

I have too many theories, but first we need to figure out if there is such a person: That's right, I'm questioning Reality.

m-j-fox··on Secret Dots from Printer Outed NSA Leaker
Agreed. Whenever I leak, I make sure to pin it on some derp. Throws them off my trail so I don't end up like Manning. As for the derp, she'll get a book deal which is more than she ever had going for her.

(Kind of annoyed that the derp became the story while the actual leak never made the front page.)

m-j-fox··on Comparing Bandwidth Costs of Amazon, Google and Microsoft Cloud Computing
I'm not cruel enough to locate actual people in Provo, just servers.
m-j-fox··on Ask HN: Women in tech, how do you find non-toxic work environments?
Cube-farm vs. open are not the extremes. My father had an office the size of a studio apartment with a door and a couch and a detergent bottle he peed in to avoid running into co-workers in the bathroom. I've seen an SF startup where people sit shoulder-to-shoulder on picnic benches, their only privacy, headphones and a single glass-walled conference room. That's extreme.
