lyu07282··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
> Making the barrier of entry to the market so high that nobody can compete with existing players.

You have to understand that some things can not be different. Lets take an example that is simpler, that even libertarians might understand: Streets, you can not privatize streets. You can not have a market where companies build streets and compete for customers to use their streets. Because you can not build 5 different streets to the same place. Infrastructure like fiber internet is like streets, you can't have 5 different companies rip open every street to every house and put fiber into it.

lyu07282··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
No the problem is that it just doesn't work no matter how much faith you have in the free market. The whole point is to get over this crazy ideology and think rationally about it, the problem isn't "caused by the government getting involved" it's caused by people who think like you, running the government. The article explains this very well you should read it:

> True capitalism requires competition. But infrastructure is a natural monopoly. If you treat it like a regular consumer product, you don’t get competition. You get waste, or you get a monopoly.

> The Swiss model understands this. They built the infrastructure once, as a shared, neutral asset, and then let the market compete on the services that run over it.

lyu07282··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
I think the people who think "free market" will fix any problem are the same exact people who think that it would be a great idea if companies are allowed to own their own fiber or put thousands of satellites into orbit. They will see it as a problem of regulations that it is too cumbersome to put fiber into the ground as a company, and advocate for deregulation, "micro trenching" and privatization, that in order to "let the market do its thing" you need to deregulate the ISPs, get rid of net neutrality, get rid of the FCC, privatize all publicly owned infrastructure not yet privatized. Its the exact cancer of an ideology that made US and European infrastructure a joke.

it was just a few years before my time, I sometimes read through old threads on usenet it feels like internet archeology. If you still remember it, what do you think about how it compares with today's discussion culture?

Killfiles are interesting, but nowadays it seems almost impossible to block everyone crazy on X/Twitter, perhaps more feasible back then

a few months ago for example from my usenet archeology: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47160709

lyu07282··on Most arguments are about ego, not ideas
I don't really like that quote, what is a position but an opinion and how do you reason about options? It doesn't really make sense. Its like when liberals say "reality has a liberal bias", its not a very useful thing to say either because it doesn't work that way in practice. Why do you support abortion? Why do you oppose abortion? People will give perfectly reasonable answers to either question.
lyu07282··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
and Africans predominantly that's why the AES withdrew from it too. But the Europeans were under the impression their vassal status would always be benefitting them against their former colonies in their neocolonial efforts.

Trump made that whole arrangement cracking a little bit, but I still think it's mostly just the optics of it all they are still loyal servants. Nobody in Europe that matters gives a shit about Karim Khan or Francesca Albanese getting debanked and sanctioned, they would and love to do it themselves.

lyu07282··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
Speaking of, my favourite Denmark story was probably Greenland when the US abandoned their cold-war era bases they just buried all their highly toxic trash in the ice. That ice is now melting and Denmark has to clean it all up. In the agreement with the US they excluded the US from any responsibility so they have to pay for it themselves. They also got really mad when the Greenlanders went behind the back of Denmark to complain at the UN about it.

Then Trump threatened to invade Greenland. And now the US is in negotiation with NATO (yeah lol) to build 3 new bases there that would be designated as US territory (bwahaha). One thing I like about Trump he drags all the Europeans through the mud so publicly it makes the contradictions impossible to miss, that's why they all hate him but still have to kiss his feet it's awesome. Like Obama made their groveling seem less suspect.

But yeah people are fucking clueless about everything. At least our media is free and not state controlled propaganda right?

lyu07282··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
> I really don’t know what the fuck the Europeans are thinking by playing the US’s stupid games. As we see time and time again, it won’t be repaid in kind.

I feel like the European relationship with the US can really be summed up by the 30 permanent military bases and 84,000 military personnel stationed in their borders and the underlying faith that it's for their own protection, except we better never ask them to leave just in case. Everything else sort of follows from that point.

lyu07282··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
Forced mass deportation of immigrants and anyone not ethnically swedish (= dark skin) even if they are citizens, as well as calling anyone using social safety nets parasites, is just your standard far-right racist populism. There is zero class consciousness if you throw the weakest people with the least influence in society under the bus for your populism.

It's almost definitionally entirely the opposite of Marxism, since that's precisely about recognizing social conflicts caused by things like immigration and poverty as a bourgeoisie plot to divide the working class, to deflect it away from the actual problem. That's why rich people donate to far-right parties in the first place, it's in their class interest to do so.

lyu07282··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
Uhh imagine you know about countries other than the US that implement age verification. Like the UK, Brazil, Australia, France, Spain, Italy and dozens of other countries with vastly different educational systems. Then perhaps you could begin to understand the magnitude of your own ignorance of actual power and political ideology. Instead of embarrassingly trying to reason yourself a political education from first principle.

Uh dumb law I don't like. Cause people dumb. If people not dumb, no dumb law. Uhh I am very smart. "Systems thinking" oh fucking hell stfu

lyu07282··on PlayStation Is Deleting 551 Movies from Customers' Accounts
no the difference is CSS (the encryption of DVDs) has been broken, but AACS of Blu-ray has never been broken itself. Cracking it relies on player keys being leaked and those are getting rotated in newer disks, that's what I was hinting at. They also do some ridiculous stuff with obfuscated virtual machines in BD+ and audio watermarking that may mute your ripped disk on newer TVs (I'm not joking[1]). So again: don't buy blu-ray either!

lyu07282··on PlayStation Is Deleting 551 Movies from Customers' Accounts
> Digital movies on DVD and Blu-Ray discs on our shelves.

It actually already got a bit more fuzzy with Blu-Ray and especially with later BD+ doesn't it? You own some encrypted data, but there is absolutely no guarantee you will always have access to a player with the right keys and a TV that is compatible and isn't refusing to play it.

It already drove the needle way past acceptable copy protection, do not buy Blu-Rays!

lyu07282··on No-One Escapes the Permanent Underclass
Reads like a wild uneducated delusional libertarian fanfic. AI will make the all evil government at the top of the pyramid first enslave us all and then even come for the trillionaires (OH NO!) and then there is only the evil government left and then the AI even comes for the evil government people (OH YES!)! Sort of have to read it in the voice of a 12 year old.

This is the kind of stuff I imagine they read to each other at meetings of Peter Thiel's 'Dialog' events while they sit in a circle taking turns sipping blood from palestinian baby skulls.

lyu07282··on LastPass notifies users of yet another data breach
Bitwarden doesn't redirect you to a third party if you visit their support page:

https://bitwarden.com/help/

But LastPass does (Salesforce CNAME):

https://support.lastpass.com/s/?language=en_US

So this couldn't have happened to bitwarden, you own the reputation loss if any of your suppliers get owned. Though it really doesn't matter anymore for LastPass they leaked their customers vaults before, I have no idea how they can still be in business.

lyu07282··on Ask HN: Where is the programming profession going?
There was a reddit thread earlier very similar some interesting comments there too:

https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1ueidyv/softwar...

> I had an interview where I was asked the obligatory “what’s your Al workflow” and I said I use it for searching documentation and writing small functions or boilerplate that are tedious. Then I was asked whether I use Cursor. I said no, and immediately was told that “I’d be a better programmer if I used Cursor”. I have 13 years of software engineering experience, and was talked down by an Al startup with no minimal viable prototype. Then I was told I did not have the experience for the role. I love this timeline so much

lyu07282··on Canadian government spent $46.8M on a secret Palantir contract
It's not Intel they get, it's like a data analytics platform they rent that ticks all the regulatory boxes but it's consolidating from data sources they already have.

I'm fairly confident nobody would've cared or even known about Palantir if it was still Biden's term. Like how nobody cares what the western neolib blob buys from Israeli tech companies for instance.

> because for once in the history of civilization, we'd be fighting for our own right and not some elite group's right. I hope I am not alone in this line of thinking

They depoliticized people to this degree that they fantasize of joining the a-political resistance movement, its kind of sad. This isn't meant as an insult, you should be angry that you live in a society that left you politically oblivious. Like no dude, people fought against power all the time, the people who you listen to just told you that all that do are dangerous politicized radicals or terrorists. Find who is punching UP, then get a political education in that direction.

lyu07282··on There are no instances in ATProto
Exactly this, people seem to confuse decentralization with federation. The Blockchain is decentralized, the fediverse is federated, big difference. I think it's because what we actually want and need right now (with western regimes dialing up censorship and repression to eleven) is decentralized social media, but that doesn't exist yet unfortunately.

lyu07282··on After Months of War, Trump Says Iran Has Right to Nuclear Program
As the Zionists are scrambling a last ditch effort to save the war, blasting us with the "bad deal" talking points in unison across all media to convince us it makes ANY sense to keep going with this psychotic war (hell even FOX news is shitting on Trump as we speak). But it seems the global capital interests were finally hurt enough by Iran's tactics to get through to Trump, to forcibly override Israel and put an end to Israels war, that is and was never in anybodies interests but Israels.

They really took us all on a ride there, now lets see if Trump has what it takes to force them to withdraw from their new Lebensraum in Lebanon at gunpoint... Still a very good chance this deal all blows up.

lyu07282··on US and Iran reach cease fire agreement
You accuse me of dehumanizing people while Israel is considering Palestinians just existing, politically offensive. No amount of propaganda and internet censorship can overcome the first live streamed genocide in history, and everybody can see [1] a repeat now in Lebanon, Israels reputation is done.

Also criticism of the government of Israel's actions ISN'T dehumanizing Israelis, THAT is insulting, I can be critical of Trump all day every day without anybody thinking I want harm to come to American people.

lyu07282··on US and Iran reach cease fire agreement
> That's not unexpected when there are military tunnels under the cities. How else could they be eliminated?

Brilliant, any underground structure becomes a "terror tunnel", its wonderful you can level whole neighborhoods and afterwards claim it was justified because there were tunnels there. If that were true we would see gaps in the destruction in the satellite imagery wouldn't we? Or where they digging tunnels in grid patterns to every house in every neighborhood and under every street? What total moral bankruptcy to just blanked declare every civilian home and infrastructure as justifiable targets.

Anyway if we want Israel talking points uncritically parroted we can just read literally any newspaper so spare us your breath.

lyu07282··on US and Iran reach cease fire agreement
These wars would only ever end if every force in the middle east that offers resistance to Israel's ambitions are defeated, but that resistance is both inevitable and offers the exact justification needed to implement said ambitions, its wonderfully circular.

In Gaza they literally pulverized entire cities [1], making them uninhabitable, this isn't even really a war on terror by the western mainstream's standards, its a war on concrete paid for with american tax payer bombs and bulldozers. They are replicating that same exact playbook in Lebanon right now [2]. How morally bankrupt or completely misinformed do you have to be, to support this absolute barbarism at this point.

The key part to understand why this means nothing:

> Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a statement that the country had finalized a memorandum of understanding with the United States

> The agreement will be signed on Friday

> In a statement, Supreme National Security Council said the agreement called for an immediate end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon

But Israel is never going to reverse its invasion of Lebanon, its key to their Greater Israel[1] project. It's important to know that Israel is currently occupying parts of southern Lebanon [2]. Trump would have to force Israel to stop its illegal invasion, that's never going to happen.

lyu07282··on How to earn a billion dollars
> why? Why should I (or anyone) earn a billion dollars?

The once was a time where everybody reached similar questions, like "why does our monarch deserve to own all this wealth?" and "why does this plantation owner deserve to own these people?" Today it is the myth of meritocracy, they worked harder, or were smarter, and that's why they deserve it. Its all the same moral sickness. The future is socialism or barbarism, everyone get your heads out of your asses and choose.
