lysp··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
This is what comes to mind for me too.

As an example, I am well aware of how strict r/worldnews is moderated on IvP topics, so I am extra careful to be factual rather than simply making comments based on more general thoughts, like I do for other areas.

I have responded to some comments in the past by responding by quoting legal cases, news links I sourced my comment from, or from subject experts.

It doesn't matter how accurate or factually proven the comment is. If it's even slightly critical, it'll end up with votes of anywhere from -10 to -50 from all the down votes.

For other people's comments, anything negative that hasn't been down voted into oblivion will always have the "cross" icon next to them, meaning it's listed as "controversial", which is when it has a large number of down votes, plus up votes to balance it out.

lysp··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Also, wasn't their B+C research private at the time, with them only releasing those details publicly after this blew up?

If they had published B+C, I think that would lean more towards fair game, as that is how research works and is improved on over time. But it seems like unpublished/private B + C may have been used by the model to hint it into working out how to get from A->D.

lysp··on Gambling ads on social media reach more than twice as many men as women: study
I agree. I find men in the 18-30 range being a prime target for targeted gambling ads.

In Australia, it is also not just in app/browser ads either. Gambling promotion is very normalised and entrenched.

The major sports on news and sports shows have the odds showing who is likely to win. Some sports analysis shows (especially on pay TV) even go as far as providing overs/unders for line betting or "possibly wins" from multi-bets (bet $100 and you can win $123,000 with this combination).

Around the sports grounds - all covered in ads. The scoreboards have odds. The team and competition mobile apps all have odds. Even commentary on the radio has ads inserted regularly during a call: "Player A runs up and kicks a goal, and they are now level with 10 points on the Elon-Musk SpaceX Scoreboard. An amazing goal, it's a candidate for the Anthropic goal of the week." During quarter/half breaks, they give more options to bet on. Due to this, I prefer mostly to listen to commentary on public broadcasters as they are not allowed to contain ads at all. I find commercial radio trying to insert brand names every second sentence rather than providing expert analysis.

Similar to loot boxes for teens. It's building up habits for future gambling addictions. Mostly FPS games - that are prominently targeted at teenage boys.

lysp··on Ask HN: Easiest UX for Seniors
The other potential issue is the age of the users.

Magic emails might work for general users, but for an 80yo who struggles using a mouse. Teaching them to click on links in emails is probably not the best practise.

Not really, otherwise perpetrators will just "I was just looking at it, I didn't do anything as bad as creating it". Their act is still illegal.

There was a cartoon picture I remember seeing around 15+ years ago of Bart Simpson performing a sex act. In some jurisdictions (such as Australia), this falls under the legal definition.

lysp··on A One-Minute ADHD Test
Stopped reading at "treatable with glasses."

I'm old enough to remember when vision impairment was invented. To sell glasses.

Granted some people have difficulty seeing. I'm one of them. But I've only heard of people in the US getting glasses for something which is basically a lack of looking hard enough.

----

Your response was ablest, dismissive and quite offensive.

1. ADHD was first described in 1798 by Sir Alexander Crichton

2. It is a neuro-developmental disorder where there is dysregulation of dopamine and norepinephrine receptors in the brain

3. It is identifiable via MRI scans where size differences were noted in specific areas of the brain (Caudate nucleus, Putamen, Nucleus accumbens, Amygdala, Hippocampus) [1]

4. It is about 80% heritable [2]. So genetics for inheriting ADHD from your parents is about equivalent to genetics from height which is also around 80%.

The "meds" increase the intensity of dopamine signals to a level that allows the brain to react to them, rather than being too low for them to be detected.

lysp··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
As you're well aware, simply dismissing these as random "youtube videos" is disingenuous. The footage is sourced from the Associated Press (AP) which you have no doubt heard of. It has 235 news bureaus in 94 countries worldwide, and has been around for ~180 years, also having won 59 Pulitzer prizes for its journalism.

Your claim that buildings are being destroyed because they were "booby trapped" comes from a partisan source (the Israeli Government/IDF), which is an active participant in this conflict. Their claims are a liability limiting exercise and it's in their best interests do downplay destruction they have caused.

Statements from a government at war regarding their own military conduct are basically a PR exercise unless they have been independently verified. Plus independent verification is quite hard, as the same partisan source has prevented independent media from gaining access into the strip which stops independent verification of both side's claims.

Do you have independent sources for the booby trapping other than IDF or news organisations repeating their press releases? Basically anything from international NGOs / neutral observers that confirm that houses are booby trapped to such a scale that it necessitates the flattening of entire residential blocks?

While you say it's trivial to find a house with no damage, that was not my point. My point was from viewing the drone footage - that's view covers entire suburbs - there is not one single intact building in all 3 separate videos.

But since you mentioned "recently satellite imagery", lets look at the actual data provided by experts who analyse it.

The United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT), released its Comprehensive Damage Assessment in late October 2025. So it's 3 weeks old. Completely fresh and up to date.

* It uses high-res imagery from as recent as 11 October 2025

* It tracks damage over time rather than just a before/after assessment

https://www.un.org/unispal/document/unosat-gaza-strip-damage...

Quoting the summary:

> According to satellite imagery analysis, as of 11 October 2025, approximately 81% of all structures in the Gaza Strip are damaged. Among the damaged structures, UNOSAT identified 123,464 destroyed structures, 17,116 severely damaged structures, 33,857 moderately damaged structures, and 23,836 possibly damaged structures for a total of 198,273 affected structures. Compared to the 8 July 2025 assessment, this corresponds to a 4% increase in total affected structures, and an 18% increase in destroyed structures, indicating worsening damage. An estimated 320,622 housing units have been damaged, 12% more than on 08 July 2025.

Their satellite analysis shows:

* 23,464 destroyed structures

* 17,116 severely damaged structures

* 33,857 moderately damaged structures

* 23,836 possibly damaged structures

* A total of 198,273 affected structures

It also shows the destruction of housing / infrastructure has been both systematic and continual over the past two years.

Having 81% of all structures damaged (and 320k housing units) puts extreme doubt to the claim that it is "just making it safe from booby traps".

Almost no one supports their atrocities on October 7.

People however, can understand why a resistance movement in those circumstances might fight back after the history of occupation and rights abuses that has affected the area.

To make that claim of "support" is simply dismissive and minimising a long, complicated history into a few second sound bite.

For absolute clarity: I do not support harm to innocent civilians of any country.
