lynx97··on RacketCon Is Saturday
Oh thats such a killjoy attitude. There is more to programming then "production", "shipping" and the overall corporate lala. You said it yourself, you get a lot of joy from designing your own programming language. And you know, even BEFORE AI it would have been unrealistic to see your langauge actually take off big time. So you answered your own question. Racket is likely not interesting to one of the big coprs. But you know, frankly, who cares? Some people use AI and have it write only 4 languages? Sure. Go ahead, and you know? Who cares? Let them have their monoculture. Such a sad sad sad comment.
lynx97··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
I know there is no singular HN voice... But... I am still confused. Is the crowd that thinks Schwartz didn't do anything wrong the same that hyperboles the OAI hack?
lynx97··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Oh, you are friends with a disabled person, that of course, is something totally different. I didn't realize I am talking to an enlightened human.

"I am friends with a disabled person" is almost as revealing as "I have experience, I am a social worker." Both types of people usually are so obnoxious, that I try to put distance between them and me as a knee jerk reaction.

lynx97··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Came here only to check if the pelican spam has made it to the top again.
lynx97··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
A skill, how funny. Thats something only a "mainstream" person can say. You can practice your social skills as much as you want, if you are for some reason not a mainstream person. Because, now, if you go out, and try to "socialize", everyone and their dog will hit on you being special, and ruin your social experience basically forever. Did you ever try to socialize as a disabled person, for instance. You know, the hardest part of that game is to have a "normal" conversion, without random strangers going for the "Oh, now that I meet you, I have this pressing question I always wanted to ask", followed by a very unreflected, many times insulting, question about your disability, and how you cope with it. You will try that for a few months. Maybe even for years. Until you finally grow up, and realize that interacting with mainstream society is useless and will ALWAYS only hurt you in the long run. Sure, you can learn to cope by ignoring certain people, and trying to pick the good parts. But the more you do this, the more you will realize it is a lost game.

So please, don't unnecessarily simplify your analysis. It leaves a lot to be desires.

lynx97··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Yeah, but its only available for english IIRC.
lynx97··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
I'm pretty much fine, thank you. And I am pretty sure that is true for most HN users. Most of us are not hungry. The rest is a bunch of first-world problems.
lynx97··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
What is the problem?
lynx97··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
Fun fact. You can see that W is kind of the oddball when looking at the Braille alphabet. XYZ used to align with MNO, until W was added as the 23th letter, which breaks the symmetry.

lynx97··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
No, I haven't "seen the photos", literally, since I am blind. Which is also why "asking for forgiveness" wouldn't work with me, because, you know, I wouldn't even notice if you didn't ask for permission. Which nicely demonstrates that you are faaaar more entitled then you might be willing to admit. Also, there are differences from country to country when it comes to laws. And what constitutes public spaces. And so on, and so forth. But IANAL, so I am not willing to enter a back-and-forth with you. Just know that your attitude isn't universally accepted as OK.
lynx97··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
The entitlement of "I can photograph whatever I want"-people is unmatched, which is nicely demonstrated by this thread. Disrespectful, entitled and self-scentered.... individuals.
lynx97··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Whats creepy to me is people telling all sorts of sensitive information to a chatbot and NOT expecting weird consequences. The level of cope is massive.
lynx97··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
Well, yes, PGN files have structure... But still, playing Chess with an LLM is so weird that I impulsively question the sanity of people attempting to do so. Do some people really believe training on TWIC PGNs would make an LLM a good chess player?
lynx97··on Let's make quality the norm again
I would PAY Apple $500 if they'd dedicate a year of development only to fixing known issues. The number of sort-of-well-known bug grows from year to year, and it feels like they only accumulate, never go away. VoiceOver of my (touch-id-only) iPad said "Face not recognized" yesterday, because it failed to read my finger rpint. This is getting comically bad.
lynx97··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
True. However, if your child ends up developing a dependance on alcohol, do you seriously place the responsibility for that on the dealers who sold them the booze? I'd call that a lazy excuse for very bad parenting.
lynx97··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Last year, the "you need to upgrade to the recent iOS major version to use your brand new Apple Watch" caught me off-guard. This year, I am back to the usual routine of waiting AT LEAST 6 months until upgrading iOS.

lynx97··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
Do you believe the war on drugs is actually working?

Very good example you brought up there. Question is: Can we make the world safe by just arresting every bad guy... Ooooor, maybe, just maybe... Individuals are responsible for their own decisions?

Besides, its only a "dealer" if the product they are selling is illegal. Have you talked to your political representative about making social media sites illegal. How do you argue that, exactly. "That sites needs to be outlawed because it breaks my back button!!!111!"?

lynx97··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
To stay in context and say at least something to the weird ad hominem: I deliberately didn't father any children. There is no respoinsibility you might be able to assign. Contrary to actual parents, who very well know that they have responsibilities.
lynx97··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Wow! Memory safety and such... Reminds me when a friend of mine wrote in IRC long time ago: "Hmm, tail just segfaulted." When I asked "Are you on Hurd?" he just replied "Yes."
lynx97··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
This is soooo true. But unfortunately, whenever you confront a parent with their responsibilities, they immediately lash out with excuses. "How should I know." "There is already sooo much work to do." "In these times ..." All lazy ass excuses by people who obviously have no idea what responsibility they have.
lynx97··on Texas judge rules TikTok misled users on child safety feature
Instead of sueing the platforms, the parents should be subjected to CPS, on a daily basis.
lynx97··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
I have no problem with not being on top of a hierarchy. But having no agency at all was a horrible way of existance.
lynx97··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
This is plain wrong. For a browser, a11y doesn't just get handled by the OS automatically. In general, claiming a11y is easy or will be done by someone else is bordering on evil.
lynx97··on Stockfish 19
They basically replaced the static position evaluation function with a NN approach and kept the rest of the tree search mostly intact.

I ran fishtest on an old cluster for a while. Was nice to watch the stockfish team methodically improving things. Basically, every commit has to show it can beat the main branch before it gets merged.

lynx97··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
> ... because they know it is wrong

No. They hide the things they do wrong because they learnt there are consequences and they dont want to get caught.

lynx97··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I doubt that. Across the street of our small organic shop around the corner is a bike parking spot. Still, I recently fall over a bike parked directly in front of the door of said shop. Bike people are lazy more often then not.
lynx97··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
I take a 8 hour work day over being subjected to more or less random weirdness from "adults" every day. IOW, not everyone has this rose-tinted view of their childhood. I still remember adults saying "you will once look back at your childhood and miss the times". Turns out that was totally and utterly wrong. I even have bad dreams about my school/childhood time every few months. I am sooooo glad that time of being subjected to the will of others is over.
lynx97··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Don't forget the elderly. They are responsible for a crash in roughly $age% of the cases. So a 66 yo person is the reason for a crash in 2/3 of the cases... I hear Greece has a mandatory doctor visit after 65 of so every 2 years. Since that is hard to politically get through in other countries apparently, AVs might save some lives here if made mandatory of the elderly.
lynx97··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
As a blind pedestrian, 95% of the pain I have to endure while out and about is due to lazily parked bikes. IOW, bikes can even hurt people if they are NOT moving and their owner isn't even around.
lynx97··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
I wasn't trying to imply there is anything wrong with these practice projects. I have written at least two chess engines maybe. And I am seriouly considering to write an editor, so, there you have it. I kind of got sidetracked by implementing my own rope...
