lynndylanhurley··on Netlify acquires Gatsby
They did this to us as well. And not only this, but they blocked our ability to push new releases until we opted into the new plan. And this literally happened on the day of a major release for our biggest client. It felt like we were being held at gunpoint.

We called them and begged them to give us an extension so we could perform the release, and their sales rep treated us like we were the irresponsible ones for not reading the emails they had sent us carefully enough.

We've since moved to Vercel and will never use Netlify again because of the way they managed this.

lynndylanhurley··on Deno Deploy Beta 2
Rust is not well suited for the same things as javascript / typescript / jsx / etc.

Also javascript and typescript are not well suited for compilers and dev tooling.

It shouldn't be seen as a negative that Deno is using rust in places where it really shines, which is a totally different use case than what deno is typically used for.

lynndylanhurley··on Trello Desktop Application Stores Authentication Token in Plain Text
I'm the creator / maintainer of a widely used authentication library, and I also don't know the answer to this.

There have been several issues reported around this, but no one seems to have a good proposal for a solution.

I've also discussed this with security auditors from Cobalt (because they flagged it as an issue), but they also did not propose any solutions (other than using httpOnly cookies instead of tokens, which doesn't really address the issue).

lynndylanhurley··on Gruber on the Macbook Pro Keyboard
I had to use my old 2012 MBP the other day after using the 2016 MBP since it was released, and the 2012 keyboard was a stunning improvement over the 2016.

Which is strange because I never thought the 2012 keyboard was exceptional.

Do any of you prefer the new keyboard?

lynndylanhurley··on Consumer Reports Retesting MacBook Pro Battery, Apple Says Safari Bug to Blame
Here's a question - if the results were due to an obscure Safari bug, then why did Apple remove the battery life estimate with the latest OS X update?

I've been getting 2-3 hours max out of my new 15" 2016 MBP and I don't even use Safari. I'm just running webpack, vim and Chrome.

lynndylanhurley··on Don't use JSON web tokens for sessions

    You cannot invalidate JWT tokens

This is simple not true. You ALWAYS will sign your tokens with a well known secret, you could eventually even add some salt from a database to it.
I think one of the benefits of some (most?) JWT implementations is that it doesn't hit the database on every request - the token is only validated against a global secret.

So you can't invalidate a single user's session without invalidating all users' sessions.

lynndylanhurley··on From Karma to Mocha, with a taste of jsdom
The react test utils work in combination with jsdom. For example, TestUtils.renderIntoDocument will use jsdom as the document.

There is a facebook-sponsored test framework called "jest" that is more akin to mocha or jasmine, but of those three frameworks it is the worst in my opinion. It's absurdly slow, poorly supported, and it mocks all imported/required modules by default which causes me more problems than it solves.

lynndylanhurley··on Ask HN: What's your experience with the new macbook?
I completely agree with you on this. I've had to send my 1st gen retina macbook pro back to the service depot literally 5 times. The first hard drive was apparently defective, as were the first and second logic boards. And twice I had defective parts replaced with identical defective parts.

And whenever anything is sent to the service depot, they wipe the goddamn hard drive. No matter what. And you guys know the pain of re-downloading XCode, re-installing everything with homebrew, re-cloning all of your git repos, re-configuring all of your git-remotes, re-installing virtual machines for IE8, etc. It takes like 2-3 days. And it's not an issue that employers with deadlines are sympathetic about.

The stupid thing is that every time I get it back I think, "everything will be different this time". It's like a sick abusive relationship.

I just got it back like 4 days ago from the latest trip to the depot, and now there's a harsh buzzing sound that I've never heard before. So now I have to weigh the severity of this stupid issue against the headache of re-installing everything again and rolling the dice with another trip to the depot.

I guess what I'm saying is that you really should beware of 1st gen apple hardware.

lynndylanhurley··on Show HN: User authentication demo using React and jToker
I'm really liking React, but I couldn't find a good way to manage users. So I decided to port my existing AngularJS module [1] over to standard jQuery. The functionality is almost identical.

I've also built a Rails gem [2] that makes this plugin work with as little configuration as possible.

lynndylanhurley··on A Deep Dive on React Native [video]
The one thing that's prevented me from using flex-box is browser support.

Because flex-box has been re-implemented in JS, does this mean that the css-layout project [1] will provide flex-box support for older browsers?

I looked, but I couldn't find a "compatibility" section anywhere in the repo.

lynndylanhurley··on Clojure build tool Boot 2.0 RC1 out now
I've worked extensively with both grunt and gulp for the past couple of years (I've even written gulp plugins![1][2]), and I'm still shocked at how bad the tooling is compared to ruby (rails asset pipeline / sprockets) and clojure (leiningen, chestnut, etc.).

For example, here is a simple gulpfile for a livereload environment that compiles sass and coffeescript [3]. It's over 500 lines long, and it requires extensive knowledge of at least 20 plugins. And half of those plugins are there to address the shortcomings of other plugins, or of gulp itself [4].

But really the worst part is that every time some dependency of a dependency pushes a point release, it breaks the entire build. My team has resorted to passing around a stable `node_modules` dropbox folder. I'm literally terrified to run npm update!

Anyway boot looks cool, I can't wait to try it out :)

lynndylanhurley··on Bootstrap 3.3.0 and Bootstrap 4
I tried to use foundation on two separate occasions. Each time, basic features were broken (or completely missing!) out of the box, and when I tried to investigate, the code was so tangled and awkward that I either abandoned foundation, or implemented the feature from scratch myself.

Bootstrap is pleasant to work with and extend. Each of the javascript components are simple, isolated, and well thought out.

But don't take my word for it!

lynndylanhurley··on Prone: Interactive debugging exceptions in Clojure web apps, with demo video
This looks incredible.

Ring's default error handling is really cumbersome, and it's one of the major pain points that I've had using Clojure for webapps. Judging by the video, this middleware seems to solve the problem completely.

I'm going to start using this right away.

lynndylanhurley··on Holographic universe experiment begins
There's also a theory that our universe is a 3-D hologram that was spawned from a black hole in a 4-D universe [1]. Would there be any way to test this theory as well?

lynndylanhurley··on Show HN: Macdown
I've been using this for a few weeks now and I really like it.

My only complaint is that the preview window doesn't line up with the editor window sometimes, usually when using lots of images.

Overall it's been really great tho. It's the best markdown editor that I've ever used. Excellent work.

lynndylanhurley··on Clojure is imperative as opposed to declarative
This is what I gathered from the context of the article:

Clojure is imperative in the sense that the code is evaluated and executed sequentially. For example, a function cannot be referenced before it is defined.

This is in contrast with (declarative) languages such as Haskell, in which the compiler will evaluate the entire file before executing any code.

Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

lynndylanhurley··on Show HN: Satellizer – Authentication for AngularJS
I built something similar that's gained a bit of traction:

https://github.com/lynndylanhurley/ng-token-auth

ng-token-auth comes with a Rails gem, and it's configurable to work with almost any API.
