lylejohnson··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
I have a .name account and still occasionally run into sites that don't accept it.
lylejohnson··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
I was wondering the same and assuming I'd overlooked something.
lylejohnson··on Show HN: Be the ChatBOT
I kept it up until the user abruptly left the chat. That was a drag, I felt like we had a productive conversation going.
lylejohnson··on 'Calvin and Hobbes' at 40
I also tend to associate "Bloom County" with "Calvin and Hobbes". I think I was reading both of them around the same time.
lylejohnson··on My Salary History
Low cost of living
lylejohnson··on Ursula K. Le Guin has died

lylejohnson··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy

lylejohnson··on What Made the SR-71 Blackbird Such a Badass Plane (2015)
The first I remember reading about the "Blackbird" was in the _The Uncanny X-Men_, during the Claremont & Byrne run in the early 80's. Their jet was modeled on the SR-71, although I don't recall if they explicitly mentioned that model number.
lylejohnson··on Riot – Full-text search engine in Go
Not to mention http://riotjs.com/.
lylejohnson··on Is Uncle Bob serious?
The Atlantic article that Uncle Bob was writing in response to lists several specific examples of software failures that did, or could have, resulted in loss of life: a failure of the 911 system; air traffic control systems; medical devices.
lylejohnson··on HashiCorp and Google: easing secret and infrastructure management
I'm currently taking advantages of SaltStack's GPG renderer to store secrets in our version-controlled Salt code (see https://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/ref/renderers/all/salt....).
lylejohnson··on Show HN: Sleeping Beauty, a 7-day roguelike game
Can someone explain how the combat is supposed to work? I suppose that if I had more experience with these kinds of games it might be obvious.
lylejohnson··on Eaten by a Grue: podcast on Infocom games, text adventures and interactive fiction
Didn't see a link here, so I'll drop one for "Get Lamp", a documentary about text adventures.

lylejohnson··on Automattic open sources Simplenote
"Ditto". Longtime user (of the iOS app) and have never lost a note that I can recall.
lylejohnson··on Google Fonts Redesigned
Looking through the "Classic Quotes" list, it's apparent that MegaHAL was a big They Might Be Giants fan.
lylejohnson··on Things I was unprepared for as a lead developer
My interpretation: Assuming the work was outsourced to cheaper laborers (e.g. in India), OP may have felt that his job was at risk. By sabotaging the efforts of those offshore workers and making them appear incapable, he hoped to discourage management from outsourcing that work.
lylejohnson··on Universal asks Google to take down 127.0.0.1 for piracy
"If DMCA claims were expensive... the garage bands and individual artists/musicians would be left out of the game completely, they couldn't use DMCA to take down their music."
lylejohnson··on The Yuri Gadyukin Wikipedia Hoax (2013)
By the end of the article it had crossed my mind that Boyter and Ducker (the perpetrators of the hoax) were themselves fictitious characters, and that the article itself was part of a larger hoax.
lylejohnson··on [dead]
This is so over the top that I read it as satire (not good satire, but satire). Is this serious?
lylejohnson··on Ask HN: Good books on debugging?
I have read it, and it's quite good. Was about to post the link myself until I saw that you had.
lylejohnson··on Microsoft is killing off the Internet Explorer brand
Whoosh.
lylejohnson··on Working at Netflix
Probably not in her list of "favorite firing" stories.
lylejohnson··on Ask HN: What new or hot technology do you recommend learning?
> Try and calculate the enormous waste of both time and money from memory leaks caused by code written in C and C++. Rust solves this...

This seems like an unusual language feature to highlight --- don't most modern programming languages solve this problem with various implementations of GC or memory management? N.B. I am not at all familiar with Rust and so maybe I'm missing some important context...

lylejohnson··on Listeners of 'Serial' Turn into Detectives, With Troubling Results
How is it fundamentally different from other "true crime" shows like "Dateline", "20/20", and "48 Hours"?
lylejohnson··on Pro Git, 2nd Edition
This is the book that I recommend to colleagues who are learning Git. I still refer back to it on occasion when I get into tricky situations with Git. Looking forward to reading through this new edition.

lylejohnson··on Ask HN: What's the best technical eBook you have read?
Am I the only one who's curious why the poster specified an "eBook" instead of just "book"?
lylejohnson··on JSON Resume – a JSON-based open source standard for resumes
Are you kidding? With this, I can more easily skip over those applicants with tons of Java and C++ development experience when I'm looking for a C# developer. No more wasting time on reading resumes with completely unrelated experience!
lylejohnson··on All of Bach
Even looking at the graphic, I didn't understand --- I thought they wanted me to tilt my iPad along the horizontal axis (pitch). When that didn't work I tried tilting on vertical (roll). It wasn't until the tablet slipped in my hands enough to rotate sideways that I got a clue.
lylejohnson··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
A U.S. President, maybe, but no, certainly not a plain old CEO.
