At that point, why not have a home desktop and a work desktop? You've been able to have external hot-swap SSDs in a relatively small form factor for years. They make m.2 hot swappable frames[0].

> longer than a year without drastically losing productivity.

The data suggests you can get away with it for 4 weeks[0]. Then you hit the inflection point.

lylejantzi3rd··on Ask HN: How much employee resume verification is done in practice?
We're not talking about references. We're talking about potential employers calling the companies listed on your resume to verify your employment history, either as part of the interview process or as part of a background check.

> Eh, HR at previous employers might share whether you were a problem employee.

HR departments are trained to say exactly two things: whether or not the person worked there and the person's dates of employment. Anything else can result in a lawsuit.

lylejantzi3rd··on Ask HN: How much employee resume verification is done in practice?
Do you know what a full background check shows?

Calling all of your previous employers will get them your dates of employment and nothing else. Less than that if you worked for a startup that went out of business.

I don't even try to answer that question seriously anymore.

"I sell hemorrhoid cream."

"I'm a small business owner. We make teledildonics."

To this day, nobody has ever asked me what "teledildonics" is. Either they already know or they don't care.

If these options clearly make git better, why aren't they the defaults?

What I don't understand is: why use numbers?

Using your example, you could describe the insurance for your Citron as 21.2.8. Or, you could call it automobiles.citron.insurance. Which looks a lot like automobiles/citron/insurance. How is this any different from just using a folder structure?

It's easier and quicker to move code around with braces when you're using vim. Vim has motions for selecting, editing, copying, etc everything between two braces. Without the braces, it makes moving that code around much more difficult, and error prone.
lylejantzi3rd··on Ask HN: Is anyone making money selling traditional downloadable software?
A little off topic, but, if you'll indulge me: Why do you think nobody has been able to make a successful alternative to Photoshop? Everybody I know complains about it constantly, and yet it's still the industry standard.

A lot of people have a strange sort of amnesia where they forget anything that doesn't support their preconceptions. I've had conversations that go like this:

"Our interview process is perfect! We've never had a bad hire."

"What about that guy we hired to rewrite our engine? The ex-googler? We had to fire him after a month."

"Oh, yeah. I forgot about him."

OLED and HDR are nice, but I don't do anything at work that requires them, and burn-in is still a concern.

lylejantzi3rd··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
Marketing and sales, like everybody else. :)

Desktop application development. I want to make it as easy and fast to create desktop apps as it is to create a web app or a command line app.

lylejantzi3rd··on Clay – UI Layout Library
It's not all that much different than html or even React. You can assign each part to named functions and turn it into something more like this:

    LandingPageDesktop(landingPageDesktopId, landingPageDesktopProperties) {
      LandingPage(landingPageId, landingPageProperties) {
        LeftText() {
          etc...
        }
      }
    }
The real issue is trying to represent graphical objects, and the relationship between those objects, with text. Graphical builders/RAD tools seem like such an obvious solution, but that approach has largely been abandoned.
