lylejantzi3rd··on Show HN: I reinvented PHP in TypeScript (demo)
A lot of people here are comparing it to PHP, but it looks more like python to me.
lylejantzi3rd··on Show HN: Hardtime.nvim – break bad habits and master Vim motions
This is awesome. This might be the thing that gets me to stop being a dinosaur and switch to neovim.
lylejantzi3rd··on Popcorn: Run Elixir in WASM
Doesn't Blazor include the entire .net core runtime? Or has that changed?
lylejantzi3rd··on Popcorn: Run Elixir in WASM
You can mitigate some of that with web workers, but it's a shame that multiple websites can't share a python runtime the same way they can on a shared linux box. You have to download a separate one for every website that uses it. But, if you follow that train of thought to the end, you wind up with the browser itself bundling those runtimes, just like it did with Flash back in the day.

I'm not sure any of this would be an improvement over what we have now.

lylejantzi3rd··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
It's expensive, but not wildly so. Yes, it's potent. If what you're looking for is a cup of coffee, you're supposed to dilute it with water.

Did I miss an announcement?

lylejantzi3rd··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
A radiation safety officer from UC Berkeley already invented coffee for people who hate coffee. He calls it The Black Blood of the Earth.

A quarter of the sales are sent to his fixer who looks after the babushkas in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

lylejantzi3rd··on How to title your blog post or whatever
It did cause a small uproar, but not as big of one as I expected. Musk admitted that posts with links that people clicked on would get de-prioritized by the algorithm.

lylejantzi3rd··on Show HN: Aberdeen – An elegant approach to reactive UIs
I think he meant examples where "Managing and updating the DOM is stupid simple." The consensus here seems to be that updating the DOM is a difficult problem. It would be nice to have counter-examples.

lylejantzi3rd··on Vibe Coding Is Fun–But Vibe Refactoring Pays the Bills
Are we at the point yet where companies are looking for programmers specifically to fix their vibe coded codebases? A codebase restoration expert?

Or will they do what most companies do when they sink millions of dollars into a codebase that doesn't work: dump the codebase, dump the team, hire a new one, and build from scratch?

What does everybody think?

edit: oxford comma is life.

lylejantzi3rd··on Show HN: Outpost – OSS infra for outbound webhooks and event destinations
Good answer.
lylejantzi3rd··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
I'm working on a WASM clone of the original Castle Wolfenstein. I'm going to call it Castle WASMstein.
lylejantzi3rd··on Exercise before bed is linked with disrupted sleep
Does anybody here use a sleep tracker? I'm curious if your findings are in line with the article.
lylejantzi3rd··on Making a smart bike dumb so it works again
Start with luxury items. You're right, not many people would pay $500 for a dumbed down device when they can buy a smart device for $300. But, I know for a fact that there are enough people that would pay $5000 for a $3000 tv if it had the default OS removed and replaced with something sane.
lylejantzi3rd··on How I blog with Obsidian, Hugo, GitHub, and Cloudflare
Nice! I especially like the automatic compression of assets. It's such a pain to do it manually that I don't bother most of the time. I cross my fingers and hope the reader has a fast internet connection.
lylejantzi3rd··on How I blog with Obsidian, Hugo, GitHub, and Cloudflare
Because writing in markdown is a nicer experience. You could convert markdown to html using Pandoc, but another nice thing that these blog generators do is templating and indexing. Neither of which is necessary, but still, they're nice, especially if it happens automatically when you push to github.
lylejantzi3rd··on How I blog with Obsidian, Hugo, GitHub, and Cloudflare
You don't have to. It's just a blog. Fabian Sanglard doesn't.

lylejantzi3rd··on Four Years of Jai (2024)
This take is equally bizarre. Most languages have an addition semantic. Most languages do not have RAII. That's, by and large, a C++ thing. Jai does NOT have RAII. So, again, why would anybody care what his opinion on RAII is?
lylejantzi3rd··on Ask HN: why is my F500 employer okay with paying 5x to freelancers?
A few more...

- They sometimes provide specialized skills the company has difficulty hiring for.

- They sometimes provide specialized skills that the company only needs for a short period of time. The goto example here is audio programming on a video game.

lylejantzi3rd··on JavaScript Views, the Hard Way – A Pattern for Writing UI
I call printPosts with the new post data. It rewrites the whole chunk in one go, which is pretty snappy. I haven't decided how I'm going to handle more granular updates yet, like comment count or likes.
lylejantzi3rd··on JavaScript Views, the Hard Way – A Pattern for Writing UI
Posts are sanitized on the server side. This is client side code.
lylejantzi3rd··on JavaScript Views, the Hard Way – A Pattern for Writing UI
I came up with something similar recently, except it doesn't use template elements. It just uses functions and template literals. The function returns a string, which gets dumped into an existing element's innerHTML. Or, a new div element is created to dump it into. Re-rendering is pretty quick that way.

A significant issue I have with writing code this way is that the functions nest and it becomes very difficult to make them compose in a sane way.

    function printPosts(posts) {
      let content = ""

      posts.forEach((post, i) => {
        content += printPost(post)
      })

      window.posts.innerHTML = content
    }

    function printPost(post) {
      return `
        <div class="post" data-guid="${post.guid}">
          <div>
            <img class="avatar" src="https://imghost.com${post.avatar.thumb}"/>
          </div>
          <div class="content">
            <div class="text-content">${post.parsed_text}</div>
            ${post?.image_urls?.length > 0 ? printImage(`https://imghost.com${post.image_urls[0].original}`) : ''}
            ${post?.url_preview ? `<hr/><div class="preview">${printPreview(post.url_preview)}</div>` : ''}
            ${post?.quote_data ? `<hr/><div class="quote">${printQuote(post.quote_data)}</div>` : ''}
            ${post?.filtered ? `<div>filtered by: <b>${post.filtered}</b></div>` : ''}
          </div>
        </div>
      `
    }
lylejantzi3rd··on Four Years of Jai (2024)
There is no RAII in his language. Why would you care if he understands it or not?
lylejantzi3rd··on Toothpaste widely contaminated with lead and other metals, US research finds

lylejantzi3rd··on The software engineers willing to pay $10k to help them land a coding job
If you can really do that, you should slap a course together and sell it for $10k a pop.
lylejantzi3rd··on The software engineers willing to pay $10k to help them land a coding job
I'm guessing it didn't work? It doesn't sound like it worked for this guy, either.
lylejantzi3rd··on The software engineers willing to pay $10k to help them land a coding job
I know of precisely one company that does this: 10X Management. It's similar to the top Hollywood agencies like CAA in that it's extremely hard to get them to represent you.

I'm not sure why there aren't any "free agents" running around Silicon Valley like they do in Hollywood. If I had to guess, it's probably because the same skills you need to do that job in Silicon Valley pay more in other sectors, like Hollywood.

lylejantzi3rd··on America Is Watching the Rise of a Dual State
Exposure, defunding, and prosecution.
lylejantzi3rd··on America Is Watching the Rise of a Dual State
We already had a dual state. What we're seeing now is that dual state being revealed and threatened.
