lxmorj··on Millions of Americans could lose their electricity as shutoff moratoriums expire
You don't think usage would go up dramatically if electricity was free?
lxmorj··on Semi-transparent solar panels allow concurrent production of crops and power
Well, you can build shit with the wood that's going to last a long time and plant a new tree. Though I'm not sure the lumber processing & construction isn't producing more carbon than the tree sequesters...
lxmorj··on How long does a freezer stay frozen when the power goes out?
That is a much cleaner method
lxmorj··on How Inuit parents teach kids to control their anger (2019)
If you told a child "you see, when you go in the water, your lungs stop being able to absorb oxygen and your brain shuts down - after long enough - we cannot start it back up again" they aren't going to understand.

Using allegories you can put things into terms the child understands more easily. As they get older you can explain the truth behind the "lie" or story, if you like.

lxmorj··on Siberian heatwave of 2020 almost impossible without climate change
A great Canadian songwriter once wrote - “If you chose not to decide you still have made a choice”.

Capital needs somewhere to park, and it all come with risk. I don’t know a company that will be immune to the direct effects of climate change and the secondary geopolitical effects. How is land purchasing differently responsible than any other investment?

If that land may go up in value in the future, plenty of the current owners may be quite happy to realize some of that gain now with 100% certainty by selling to speculators.

lxmorj··on SEC issues $3.8M whistleblower award
Financial crimes can cause as much - or more harm than physical ones.
lxmorj··on Mallards ferry fish eggs between waterbodies
Just introduce Baikal Seals to the Great Lakes & they'll eat the carp. Plus - water pups!
lxmorj··on If Earth Was 50% Larger, We Might Be Stuck Here
Well sure, but the majority of your energy spent is fighting to get up to speed while in the atmosphere. A balloon or dirigible or some buoyancy play should be able to get you to a certain atmospheric density regardless of planetary gravity. That cuts the bottom off of the rocket equation pyramid and reduces drag immensely at your 'starting' point.
lxmorj··on If Earth Was 50% Larger, We Might Be Stuck Here
Right? A balloon first stage seems like an obvious work-around...
lxmorj··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
It is flabbergasting to me that we expect self-policing from protestors, but not the literal fucking police.
lxmorj··on This Website Will Self Destruct
Last donation dictates the charity that gets the money and resets the timer
lxmorj··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
Peace talks sometimes work. Asking sharks to tone down the chomping does not. There is no point to differentiating ‘attack vs incidental’ animal deaths in the same way as w humans...
lxmorj··on X-37b space plane’s microwave power beam experiment
I’m sorry but 10X the sun over a square kilometer 24/7 is a incredible weapon.
lxmorj··on For $39, Frontier Air Will Let Passengers Keep Their Distance
It's surely not worthless. The air is filtered, the concentration of cough droplets drops off rapidly with distance (inverse cube, I'd guess).
lxmorj··on Would You Have Fallen for This Phone Scam?
I recently got a call from a Chinese supplier on a presumably VOIP call, routing through my local area code and it has thrown my "avoid the 315 unknown" strategy out the window...
lxmorj··on How much power can we expect from rainfall?
Most of the potential energy of rain is wasted as it falls through the sky. What you really want is a huge funnel held up by enormous hydrogen balloons that catches the rain directly from the cloud, and miles-long hose coming out of the bottom. Then you'll get some real bang for your buck!
lxmorj··on Harvard professor rides 170x return in Moderna stock to become a billionaire
Be in position to take these bets in the first place by meeting the necessary but insufficient requirements within your control: gain skills, work hard using them.
lxmorj··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
I wonder - does YouTube still serve ads in ‘demonetized’ videos and just cut out the creators commissions?
lxmorj··on Economists who defend disaster profiteers are wrong
Your penultimate point doesn't address that this isn't about expectations. It's asking companies to actively cause their own profits to fall. Raw material prices are being bid up - but even assuming you fix those prices somehow - you can't price fix labor prices while scaling up. Most production companies can't scale without running OT or hiring new employees, both of which will drive cost-per-unit up significantly. In a competitive industry, it's not crazy to think the difference between profitable and unprofitable is less than the increase cost of overtime pay.

3M may be large enough and have enough similar production lines that they can shift production around and still make a marginal profit on the scaled up production, but that's not a given. Smaller companies or more specialized ones would have to decide to increase production to their own detriment. Some might do that out of goodwill, but your last point correctly calls that out for the gamble it is.

lxmorj··on How did the U.S. end up with nurses wearing garbage bags?
A better idea is to subsidize flexible-enough factories. Fir example, the Feds pay your local cardboard box company a yearly stipend to run 1-week emergency drill where there swap production to n95s. They could maintain a database of "wants" that any manufacturing company could elect to maintain the capability for.

"Spin up production for X units of Y product for Z weeks per year and we'll give you $N. In the event that we need you to swap over for a national emergency, we'll pay you $M per week of production."

lxmorj··on Whitmer: Michigan closing all K-12 school buildings
That's sounds a lot like "we're not giving them money to help, but if they can pull a solution out of their asses we'd appreciate it"
lxmorj··on Ask patio11 anything
Nope. It’s because he writes clearly and insightfully, over a long period of time, about a relatively consistent set of topics.
lxmorj··on Protein discovered inside a meteorite
Don’t build my app
lxmorj··on The Armoured Glass Box Is an Instrument of Torture
It's a way to cement power and the perception of power. Skirting international law like this sends a message that you can do whatever you like. It's not a lie, either. Abu Dhabi is a pretty clear signal that America plays by the rules until we don't.
lxmorj··on Mars Needs Leap Days Too
I bet those watches sell for a pretty penny
lxmorj··on The comfortable life is killing us
As someone w silly and weird and boring interests... If the things that interest you are interesting to NO ONE... you might have (subconsciously or otherwise) picked something intentionally to avoid human contact.
lxmorj··on The comfortable life is killing us
This is a really tricky position to take. How exactly do you measure the benefit of video chat with your grandkids every week, no matter how far away you live? Ubiquitous access to the internet?
lxmorj··on No City Hates Its Landlords Like Berlin Does
It's a real shame that housing supply is fixed and it's impossible to build more.
lxmorj··on AT&T lied about everything it promised to do if it got a tax cut
I believe he means: they aren’t in competition for customers. They are in competition for stockholders. Stockholders exist in a true competitive marketplace where AT&T must provide value to get their business. This is strictly not the case for most of AT&Ts customer-facing business. That exists in an oligopoly that appears to collude on pricing and (lack of) service.
lxmorj··on Sanitation conquered disease long before vaccines or antibiotics
One approach might be broad spectrum antibiotics when urgent and specific bacteria undetermined. In parallel, cultures to isolate the problem, then apply the specific phage to finish the job. Seems like this would prevent or at least hugely reduce antibiotic resistance from increasing.
