lvl155··on Agent design is still hard
Design is hard because models change almost on a weekly basis. Quality abruptly falls off or drastically changes without announcements. It’s like building a house without proper foundation. I don’t know how many tokens I wasted because of this. I want to say 30% of the cost and resources this year for me.
lvl155··on Why CUDA translation wont unlock AMD
Let’s just say what it is: devs are too constrained to jump ship right now. It’s a massive land grab and you are not going to spend time tinkering with CUDA alternatives when even a six-month delay can basically kill your company/organization. Google and Apple are two companies with enough resources to do it. Google isn’t because they’re keeping it proprietary to their cloud. Apple still have their heads stuck in sand barely capable of fixing Siri.
lvl155··on Larry Summers resigns from OpenAI board

lvl155··on Exploring the limits of large language models as quant traders
Right, because they will tell you exactly how they generate alpha for all the world to see. It’s worth mentioning quant is not all HFT.
lvl155··on Exploring the limits of large language models as quant traders
At the end of the day it all comes down to input data. There are a lot of things you can do to collect proprietary data to give you an edge.
lvl155··on Why don't people return their shopping carts?
People in this country can’t even bother to put their carts back and you think they’re not going to get replaced by AI?
lvl155··on The Pragmatic Programmer: 20th Anniversary Edition (2023)
I don’t know why seasoned veterans praise these books and then implement some of the worst interview practices to test people on writing convoluted bs code for hours. Just doesn’t make sense. Do you want to hire pragmatic programmers or monkeys?
lvl155··on Nvidia is gearing up to sell servers instead of just GPUs and components
We’re not far from Nvidia exclusively bundling ChatGPT. It’s a classic playbook from Microsoft.
lvl155··on Zed is our office
I agree with you 100%. If basic functionalities are not airtight, there’s no way I am going to deal with growing pains just because they want to get paid on AI fluffs. Contrast this with something like Ghostty.
lvl155··on Marble by World Labs: Multimodal world model to create and edit 3D worlds
It would be nice to have these world models integrated with Blender.
lvl155··on Waymo robotaxis are now giving rides on freeways in LA, SF and Phoenix
US has way too many red tapes. As far as autonomous goes, I think Baidu will eventually win that race.
lvl155··on Digital ID, a new way to create and present an ID in Apple Wallet
I am against digital IDs. There’s a reason why security-minded people carry around physical hardware keys. The fact that Apple remains a black box company means I can’t trust them now and definitely not later when their changing financial circumstances COULD jeopardize management decisions and commitment to privacy.
lvl155··on iPhone Pocket
I do wish they sold a double-side magsafe that you can put on your shirt/jacket so I can just clip my iPhone on my chest. Pro Max is too big for my pockets.
lvl155··on SoftBank sells its entire stake in Nvidia
They probably know more than us. Such as alternative chips or that the Chinese will go in-house sooner than we think. Nvidia’s moat is not as permanent as people think.
lvl155··on Work after work: Notes from an unemployed new grad watching the job market break
Came out right after dotcom bust. It was really disappointing when I learned that corporate America simply moves on to the next graduating class. All the recruiting mechanisms in place means you’re going to get burned pretty bad if you miss that hiring wave. Some of my classmates took years to find something long term. You’re so much better off taking a year off from school to reset. As most things in life, timing is everything.
lvl155··on Cerebras Code now supports GLM 4.6 at 1000 tokens/sec
I want to use Cerebaras but it’s just not production ready. I will root for them on sideline for now.
lvl155··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
I’ve been an Apple fan for as long as I can remember. I didn’t worship Jobs but he had complete control of Apple when he returned and molded the company in his vision. The company lacks that vision. Vision Pro is an example of that failure. Luckily for them iPhone and Mac will continue to dominate. They are here for another decade plus and once the AI bubble passes and we settle on clear winners, Apple will pounce on that opportunity. Am I heartbroken that they’re not the trailblazers? Outsiders? Hipsters? Yes. The brand has gone from Ferrari to Toyota. That’s quite literally the most perfect analogy.
lvl155··on Kimi K2 Thinking, a SOTA open-source trillion-parameter reasoning model
Of course they are paying them. That’s not my point. My point is this is the only way for them to gain market share and they need Western users to train future models. They have to give them away. I’d be shocked if compute costs are not heavily subsidized by CCP.
lvl155··on Kimi K2 Thinking, a SOTA open-source trillion-parameter reasoning model
The answer is simply that no one would pay to use them for a number of reasons including privacy. They have to give them away and put up some semblance of openness. No option really.
lvl155··on Why aren't smart people happier?
Does it select for intellect? I don’t think so. In modern times, there are enough resources around for most people to breed as they wish. Family size in developed nations is probably not even correlated to education or intelligence. It might actually be negative. If there’s an indirect evolutionary arc, I’ve no idea what we are genetically “optimizing” currently. It’s definitely not intelligence.
lvl155··on Why aren't smart people happier?
9 out of 10, people around you will take advantage of you for most of your career. You will grow resentful and lose motivation. And basically the core driver of your happiness will slowly fade. I’ve seen it happen too many times.
lvl155··on Michael Burry a.k.a. "Big Short",discloses $1.1B bet against Nvidia&Palantir
I am not saying he won’t make money. But it won’t be commensurate with the risk he took on.
lvl155··on Michael Burry a.k.a. "Big Short",discloses $1.1B bet against Nvidia&Palantir
Just because something is expensive doesn’t mean you should short it via puts as Burry had done. Both Palantir and Nvidia have high IVs. You’re paying for that. You’re much better off looking for cheaper puts on securities with enough correlation. Since Volmageddon and pandemic craze, deep OTM options have been scalped to death. Rarely good value. Nvidia also didn’t report earnings yet which means you’re paying for that risk event. Not saying bullish or bearish. It’s all speculation BOTH ways.
lvl155··on Alphabet tops $100B quarterly revenue for first time, cloud grows 34%
Amazon and Apple are two companies taking it conservatively in this bubble. Possibly because they actually have gone through the last bubble with some pain. Microsoft to some degree but they have the luxury of OpenAI.

We are at a point in this bubble where planned capex is approaching theorectical limits of actual energy capacity. Let’s see when they start pumping coal companies because they restart those plants…not even joking.

lvl155··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
You set up a template project folder. In the script you can just add a uv command. In the age of Claude Code and Codex, creating a sandbox/container should be step one.
lvl155··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
Name me one service outside of Google and Apple that’s seamlessly tied to your devices. Once you buy into the system you’re basically stuck. Apple is quickly becoming Oracle.
lvl155··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
Is it optional? When there is basically Apple and Android? If you add family to the mix then you’re basically stuck with Apple ecosystem. It’s actually nice until something goes wrong and you realize their customer service is awful. They’ve gotten too big. It’s basically a big black box and you’re trapped.
lvl155··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
And it’s going to get progressively worse for everyone. My rule of thumb is that for every perceived 15% increase in care outcome, cost doubles for patients. This is how drug or procedure costs exploded over the past two decades.
lvl155··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
I would like to think our children will one day live in a society where healthcare is nominal.
lvl155··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
OT but Apple is getting worse and worse in all aspects. I hate the fact that I am locked into their monopoly.
