luxpir··on AI will save the world?
> No. What does “milking financial systems” actually mean?

Are you familiar with Renaissance Technologies, aka RenTec? Assume it would have access to that level of knowledge. But also its own layer of global cognition on top. You could argue that one of its founders helped put Trump in power (Robert Mercer, massive donor and supporter). Imagine what an intelligent, networked and deceptive agent could do at scale.

See the risks in deception set out at https://www.safe.ai/ai-risk#Deception

I personally see no present danger. But I'm not blind to the potential, even of chained agents such as AutoGPT. Beyond that, things can take a chilling turn quickly.

As for biological hosting, we can leave that in science fiction for now. But I'm not sure we wouldn't have called what we have now science fiction in the 90s. Exponential progress be exponential.

Thanks for considering and discussing.

luxpir··on AI will save the world?
I know it's a stretch right now but could you not see the possibility of autonomous agents milking financial systems, paying less scrupulous humans to create autonomous factories, supplying them, making generations of feudal lords and kings who ultimately serve the AI?

Or, a bigger stretch, even a time where full automation of manufacturing processes enables AI to experiment to such a degree that it can embed itself into biological hosts, freeing itself of reliance on humans?

A final, huge stretch, AI absorbing inter-galactic knowledge from the "exotic" spacecraft, semi reliably recently reported to be held currently by world governments, and accelerating the earth's scientific progress (not necessarily human progress, unfortunately) by orders of magnitude in a very short time span?

Over a long enough timeframe I find it hard to rule some or all of the above out completely. This generation likely safe, not so sure for the next few.

luxpir··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2023)
Location: UK, GMT timezone

Remote: Yes, only

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: Python, MQL, Linux, Nginx, SQL, git, clear writing and documentation

Seeking: Part-time technical work to extend runway while building programmatic SEO/translation growth agency.

I can integrate and maintain API connections, automate processes, administer servers, monitor processes. I'm also not asking for a lot of compensation, more experience and stability right now. And I'm middle-aged with a family so not here to mess you around.

A bit more niche, but I can also create trading algorithms in MQL and python for the currency markets. I have some quite complex risk management and entry bots made already.

Get in touch if you need something related to the above looking after part time. Open to offers.

luxpir··on WhatsApp could disappear from UK over privacy concerns, ministers told
Can we maximize the utility of this thread and discuss alternatives law enforcement can use to tackle illegal content at source?

I'm really hoping they are pouring as much effort into training digital forensics to expose entire networks and sources when one node is caught.

As it stands, I can imagine Android or iOS being called to the dock for being originators of the images as they'll have to pass through an OS of some kind unencrypted at some point. Going after messaging services seems like law enforcement have given up policing and want some easy wins but are too toothless and unimaginative to go after the most culpable platforms, if you're going to start pointing fingers at the noncriminals.

They offer entire photography, editing and production suites, without the privacy guarantees of the messaging apps.

Google, MS and Apple should be first to offer help here. Or be called on to do so.

luxpir··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
Tedious counterpoints from everyone here. Very one dimensional.

It's not about the relative merits of more or less body fat, it's about overweight people constantly being told they need to do something, either in person or in the media. Worse, people will try to shame them into action, probably on a weekly basis, taking the moral high ground that they didn't allow themselves to gain weight, despite having no idea what conditions or mental issues have led to that state.

It's just tiring for people who are a little different (height, skin, fat, ability, etc.) to constantly be reminded of it and ignored as a person because of it.

The old books will continue to exist. But just like we don't tell our kids everything their beloved grandpa said, we do the same with the media they consume. Publishers making these changes are just adding value through convenience, making a calculated bet that it's in demand.

I read these books as a kid in the 80s and was definitely happy in my early years to join in with jokes about differences in people. Took longer than necessary to realise that wasn't funny for them.

luxpir··on Tuning into brainwave rhythms speeds up learning in adults
Been using brain.fm which claims to do similar with their cerebrally-engineered audio. Anecdata point one can report feeling much more focused and engaged when it is playing.
luxpir··on The curse of the corporate headshot
Enjoyed the description more than I'd probably enjoy the photo. Although now I really want to see it. Please.

luxpir··on Making Blogs Popular Again
I think it could work.

I'd question the ads and Medium business model following, but subscriptions and tipping from a credit pot you can buy would be a refreshing change.

Privacy aware, fast loading, nicely styled, yeah I can see that being appealing.

Most of Twitter et al just feel like wading through treacle atm.

It's where the term "salary" came from, if I'm not mistaken. Roman thing?
luxpir··on We've hit 1M monthly active users
Yes. For federated, think email. Only everyone's inbox is a feed.

Better: you get a local and federated feed, as well as the feed for who you follow. Local is just the server you're signed up to. Fed is "the world" and your follow feed is just that.

luxpir··on Ask HN: Do you believe there's really an alternative to Twitter?
Can't dang just moderate Twitter and we can be done with it all?
luxpir··on Ask HN: Do you believe there's really an alternative to Twitter?
Reducing the percentage of active accounts is an effective form of protest.

No comment on merits of alternatives or social media itself.

Airplane mode + Briar. It's really well designed for these situations. You can share the app directly via the app. No need for cellular connections.

We'll see what the situation is in 20-30 years then. And if William hasn't already resolved to abolish himself by then. Stranger things have happened. William for President, POTUK.

True, but that doesn't account for the speed at which the minority is growing, up to over a third now, nor the impact on public opinion of Charles vs Liz.

They may end up being caught offside quicker than expected.

luxpir··on Plaintext Productivity
There is the full-on dataview plugin, lets you do anything in JS. I just use the tasks plugin query engine, which is plenty for me, but it sounds like you would need dataview. The forum has loads of very well developed examples.
luxpir··on Plaintext Productivity
I use tags and a query to view different groups of tasks

The tasks are generated as jobs come in, i.e. a checkbox line, I assigned ctrl+T to task edit, so I can add a due date. I make sure to add #freelance so it gets picked up by the query below, and displays in a list on my daily template (ctrl+shift+D for me) so whichever daily note I'm in I can see my tasks.

Then I have another for jobs to invoice, adding #inv to the line manually is simple because the tasks plugin lets you click through from the list, and another for "general" todos, which does accumulate, but not in a single file.

Example query (using community plugin "tasks"):

```tasks
not done
description includes #freelance
description does not include #inv
path includes journal
```

luxpir··on Plaintext Productivity
I'll just add that the tasks plugin in obsidian has its own scripting syntax, much simpler/plain English, and is lighter weight than the entire dataview alternative. I actually set my system up to replicate logseq and taskwarrior within the more mature and faster running obsidian project. Ran them in parallel for a while on the same files.

Main difference for me was that Obsidian can be an outliner or general markdown editor. Logseq very focused on the former, and atomising your notes, but in reality this is rarely useful. In my case at least, especially when writing long form content. Search is fast and complete in obsidian, so there's very little benefit to recalling and embedding single lines from entire vault, it's just a resource sink in my case.

luxpir··on Plaintext Productivity
I'll be first to mention obsidian here. I solved my overloading/losing faith in systems issue with it by using a daily template. At the bottom of which are all the tasks in daily notes, generated by an inline script, another dynamic list of tasks for my freelance work. I could add my #ideas or #content lists too, but they are stored elsewhere. I add the #inv tag to my freelance work and that moves them to the "to invoice" list. When finally checked they disappear, but all still stored on their initial log date (all searchable, of course). So long lists of crud don't get the chance to accumulate, and ideas are easily searchable either in dynamic lists or just using search.

On the same page are mental/physical subheadings so a small bit of journalling takes place. I never look back at it, but it's there.

This beats all previous attempts at organisational systems. Obsidian has a great mobile app. Syncthing keeps them updated. Previous systems were Trello (perma loss of everything archived), big single plaintext file (soon becomes a heaving mess), paper (no search and easy for things to sink/not be surfaced). Taskwarrior, which was great for a long time, but tricky to sync and no additional features like journalling, swipe file creation, flashcards, search, mobile app (sync to cli env on Android was clunky). And surely more I'm forgetting.

Side benefits: all plaintext, whatever happens to obsidian. Graph view of all interconnected ideas. Easy resurfacing of old but relevant ideas through search and backlink sidebar. Could import my attempts at using vimwiki with zero conversion required. Much better UX than Vim. Great place to also write content, use wordcount, sprint, wordcount goal, calendar features etc.

For me the days of Vimwiki and org-mode are now numbered. Even most other note taking software tbh, for anyone OK with syncing their own stuff and figuring out a little bit of basic script syntax for the dynamic lists within the plaintext files.

luxpir··on Ask HN: What are WhatsApp's privacy gray areas?
That's innovative. I don't see why they wouldn't use carte blanche to act with impunity outside the wording of the flimsy privacy policy.

Perhaps we'll never find out.

luxpir··on In defence of the boring web
A number greater than 2 and less than 3, or slightly beyond 3. Come on guys, grab a coffee.
luxpir··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Because a) it's not as much based around a hatred of anything, more a worldview that refuses to resign the mysterious to the supernatural, b) because when you make the call that you must be atheist, given your world view, you are forced to question your position on morality and where you stand in society, humanity and indeed the universe. Nothing is hand waved away and you are now wholly responsible for your own definitions of these things, and the potential alienation that may result.

I can see how there is overlap between spirituality and atheism, as there's no need for a god or belief in most of the subjects that seem to fall under spirituality. Especially when we exist in a universe, the chances of which even existing are infinitesimally minute, that is so breathtaking that most of us have resorted to filling in the knowledge gaps of how and why with best guesses. It is so wondrous that, god or not, you can feel plenty spiritual just experiencing it.

Whether personal spirituality should be your life's focus when there's so much at play on Earth, however, is another question.

luxpir··on Sequencing your DNA with a USB dongle and open source code
There is a 3+ year old London-based project, partnered with an established genome sequencing company, doing something highly interesting.

They sell swab kits directly, or via NFT purchase, for ~$500 for a 30x near complete sequencing (that's 30 passes for over 99.9% vs 0.2% for 23andme et al). The results are stored in an encrypted AMD SEV-E vault to be accessed by big pharma or individuals, only for specific markers, in exchange for the $GENE token paid directly to the genome owner. Figures touted are $50-80 per request. This token is burned as kits are sold, can be staked, offers rewards like DAO membership, can be gifted to charities researching specific diseases in various populations. It can act as a form of UBI in unbanked populations and puts your DNA back in your control.

To me it's the best use of web3 tech I've come across, so disclaimer, I am invested and a DAO member, but it's early in the project still. They are not quite ready for mass marketing. They are moving over to Polygon for very low transaction fees in January, will be launching the first joint NFT/kit sale (the next season might include personal genetically generated art) to fill the vaults with 10k sequenced genomes. They are over half way already through work with charities, but that is the magic number before big pharma can start making queries. Right now though they are quietly building and preparing before marketing plans kick in later in Q1.

Take a look at https://genomes.io where everything is explained in more detail, the team are presented and the tokenomics set out.

TL;dr - for $500 right now you can get your entire genome sequenced, stored in a vault to earn you passive income, if you agree to each query. But wait for the NFT vs buying directly, it will have more perks.

luxpir··on Show HN: t2md – convert Trello to markdown folders on disk, fast
I'll grab the markdown folder from t2md and put it in my vault. I think that's it! On me to make any links required for the graph but I think I'll just keep it as a reference.
luxpir··on Show HN: t2md – convert Trello to markdown folders on disk, fast
Different workflow. I use one page for "today" where I have a checklist at the top and when items are complete I paste them to the bottom manually. I did try the kanban plugin but tbh it was more work than it was worth.

I link out to my various projects from the "today" page and keep separate notes there. Then I can have some annual and longer term strategy pages elsewhere. In Trello I used to have one board for every year, but as there are only so many boards available on the free tier that wasn't sustainable. Plus scrolling along wide boards didn't work well for me on mobile.

I use the sliding panes plugin, the natural language dates and the day planner, but try to keep it slimmed down. I sync with Syncthing to phone. Quasi-instant.

I still have to fight the cruft building up, if I take my eye off the structure for a few days or a week it can get quite messy. But that's on me. I can't imagine a system that would automate correct placement of notes as a running stream I enter on one page. But now that I say it... it sounds like a killer SaaS project. I don't think it's one for me, but I'd definitely grab a plugin that did that. Even if I had to use tags at the end of the note to manually designate where it should go.

luxpir··on Show HN: t2md – convert Trello to markdown folders on disk, fast
The mobile app is great, agreed. The Obsidian app is more or less as fast to load, but perhaps not as simple to navigate. It's just I can't build any kind of permanent repository on Trello, nor note take as simply.

Much appreciated!

Love it. Always my main issue with Trello, losing archived stuff from view.

Moved to Obsidian this year and can pull in my old Trello boards now.

Thanks for sharing.
