lurn_mor··on Ask HN: What do you look for in a work monitor?
I had this very issue. My old computers don't support the 4K monitor I bought (or at least, at a respectable resolution, and not stretched 1080p)
lurn_mor··on I keep turning my Google Sheets into phone-friendly webapps
Easier, but more expensive in the long run.
lurn_mor··on Toronto man creates tiny mobile homes to help unhoused people escape the cold
Coroplast deteriorates quickly in UV light (like the sun). In 2-3 years, those pristine white panels will crumble under your fingertips. I just scrapped some coroplast windows that faced the sun after only 3 years.

Agreed. Anyone want to buy some Hawk Tuah crypto? That painfully young influencer seems like an expert in it...
lurn_mor··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
So. Much. Kickstarter. Garbage!
lurn_mor··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Ouch. I feel ya.

lurn_mor··on Make It Yourself
Nope! Way too big to be shared, and no organization at all. It's embarrassing to show people my messy room!
lurn_mor··on Make It Yourself
As the button says 'Download', I expect that result - a download. 'View PDF' would be the appropriate button name in your case... He can put two buttons that distinctly describe the resulting actions.

Funny, I have a folder of links of this very stuff: Future rainy day projects. Oh, to have the free time and focus!

Good job on the illustrations and the cultivating of so many projects into one book. I think you've given me a lifetime of weekend projects!

One note: you might want to put 'download' in the link to the PDF, so it downloads instead of showing up in a new browser window, which seems to be your OG design choice: <a href="https://makeityourself.org/MIY.pdf" download target="_blank"><div class="download">Download</div></a>

lurn_mor··on "Please consider my plugins hosted on wordpress.org to be abandoned."
Another Kingdom crumbles from within, and the Castles built there will suddenly disappear. Alas, just as archive.org gets hacked! Lucky for me, I bought an .io domain, so I'm good. Wait a sec...
lurn_mor··on Ask HN: What are your favorite DIY kits?
To be clear, it'a probably Debian underneath the VolumioOS: They offer good web and mobile integration, including album art and searches, with a responsive UI.

Doing that by hand or CLI might be a challenge, but certainly not impossible. Considering you can install and run VolumioOS for free (avoiding all subscription/upgrades) solves most of the 'network' and 'audio' part of your player, gratis. You can use the default headphone audio output on the Raspi - my solution might be overkill.

Yes, I have dumb speakers attached to a dumb amplifier which has one input for the Raspi's RCA outputs. (I do modify the stereo output to mono however)

lurn_mor··on On finishing projects
The author actually asked for feedback on this platform (in the spirit of the post...). Constructive criticism is not part of your process, huh?

Poor writing turns off readers, who won't come back and visit again, and it diminishes your effort and message. Pretty basic.

lurn_mor··on On finishing projects
Not to nitpick, but in this blog post, mostly every first sentence after a heading doesn't add anything, but simply repeats the heading in a longer, more rambling format. Are you bumping your word count to achieve some imagined length goal/page count?

Brevity and Ruthless Editing should be incorporated into your final cycles of 'finishing' working on projects.

lurn_mor··on [dead]
Sounds like the Rump is grabbing at straws at this point to find new fans... Catholics, Billionaires, Crypto Bros... All such highly redeemed groups of jerks. It's his wheelhouse.
lurn_mor··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I wrote a hacky PHP web app that allows me to generate 5" Optical Media artwork for imprinting using a inkjet disc printer. My script loads it's own truetype fonts (to stay on brand) and produces print-caliber artwork in milliseconds, instead of minutes. I spent a single day mastering it, and have used it weekly for decades, saving untold hours of effort. Alas, this side of the business is failing due to lack of demand (who has an optical drive anymore??), so this code will also die someday.
lurn_mor··on Ask HN: What are some cheaper Herman Miller alternatives?
Get a standing desk, don't buy a chair. Solved 99% of my lower back problems, and if I'm too tired to work at the desk, work's done!
lurn_mor··on ReMarkable
I'd bought their kickstarter, and it's a great devoted eReader device. I'm glad I was in before the subscription model was hammered onto the device after the fact.

My ReMarkable is now showing its life - one button has failed, and the device only boots reliably when the battery charge over 70%. Still use it often for fast hand-sketches of ideas, and plan on replacing the battery myself eventually.

lurn_mor··on NYPD will deploy drones to respond to 911 calls in 5 NYC precincts: officials
Until these drones are operated autonomously, it's simply moving cops from on the street to an offshore cubicle employee whose only job is to document a crime in progress so it can be added to the monthly report.

If only _everyone_ had a high resolution instant streaming video camera on them at all times...! The footage at ground level will always be better than from 50 feet in the air.

Ye old fire hazard mixed with a tripping hazard.
lurn_mor··on Ask HN: What's your oldest piece of electrical equipment?
My Electrolux Vacuum is far older than I am (50+ years) and replacement parts and consumables are still easily purchased on eBay. Runs like a champ and has never given me trouble. Plastic parts are failing faster than the metal cylinder body is. Has long since outlawed features like a spring retractable power cord. I laugh when I see another 'new' Dyson sitting in the trash heap.
