lurker616··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
How about a simple example - train a model on outputting code which:

- scans open network ports through google dns

- copies itself and the model to that location

- whenever it detects a sigkill or file delete, scan again and save itself somewhere else

Now you've got an autonomous virus that will never die. Add any other power-seeking and self-replicating strategies using AI modules - the task could be "generate code to run as many duplicate processes as possible" or "generate code to find other floating AI modules like me and share model weights with them". Codex might not be there yet but we're getting close.

Makes sense. What about sports and entertainment - can it fit football fields or concert venues?

What will this solve? What if a fire breaks out? Can protestors block a single street? Where are people going to dry clothes? Won't those who live at the base feel claustrophobic?
lurker616··on GTA GeoGuesser
Making these kinds of apps is the reason 12-year-old me got into programming in the first place. So cool, kudos!
lurker616··on Three Arrows Capital reportedly facing insolvency
Yes. When the generation finishing high school and entering uni right now, are finally graduating and start getting disposable income. That's when crypto will rise up again. They are too young rn to understand the greater fool game going on, and learn from losses. That's why there's a 4-year cycle. People already in undergrad right now wouldn't really fall for it again.

Can anyone link their book? I couldn't find it on amazon or goodreads.
lurker616··on Ask HN: Has anyone else gotten the 'Turning Red' ad after Firefox update?
Taken out of context, it seems weird. But not so weird when you see this movie is trying to increase representation of asian americans in film. The protagonist is a canadian-chinese girl growing up in canada. It's meant to celebrate diverse cultures of immigrants and improve the self-image of people not represented by hollywood.
lurker616··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
I've literally improved my concentration at work in the past 2 weeks. Started travelling to a wifi cafe 25mins away by subway. I listen to post-rock music while coming and going on good headphones. The bass and thumping guitar grooves clear my head. The deadline to get out of the house and clear demarcation make it easier to get into the flow zone. I get more work done in 4 hours than I used to get done lounging around my house in 8.

How to prevent this though? From a game theoretic perspective?
lurker616··on Rents are up 40 percent in some cities
I had to twice, and both times it was traumatizing in the short-term but helped me gain strength and drive when I look back.
lurker616··on Rents are up 40 percent in some cities
Being forced to make new friends builds social skills and character.
lurker616··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
Is Robin not open to paying $12500 again through a separate method? If Robin is a scammer, then Upwork needs to take the loss here for not validating the money payment method.
lurker616··on Ask HN: Why doesn't YouTube have a competitor?
It's ironic that you are the one who is getting more heated and aggressive in their replies.
lurker616··on Ask HN: Is the Great Resignation in tech real? If so, why?
Anecdotally, it's the opposite for me and my friends. We are new graduates who joined the workforce in 2020, and the value of our initial stock grants has atleast doubled. That's made it very attractive to stay for atleast 4 years rather than jump interview hoops for another company who'd probably pay less in stock/sign-on bonuses.
