lurker14··on Please use git pull --rebase
Is coderwall some sort of troll site, like the the Swedish Lemon Angels recipe in How to Play With Your Food?

I keep seeing bad advice posted there and popping up on HN.

lurker14··on Apple’s Jony Ive said to be bringing flat design to iOS 7
> I've been very hard on Flat UI in the past (and still dislike extreme Flat UI) but I've decided to embrace it after--

--after Apple declared it to be in style.

No, that's not what you meant, but it rings so true in the tech buzzosphere.

lurker14··on Google releases some Glass source code
cue-cat didn't retail for $1500
lurker14··on Why Should I Care That No One’s Reading Dzhokhar Tsarnaev His Miranda Rights?
Wouldn't public safety be better served if the police granted him grand-jury-style immunity from "using his statements as evidence" in exchange for getting information about other bombs?
lurker14··on Why Should I Care That No One’s Reading Dzhokhar Tsarnaev His Miranda Rights?
If they cared so much about public safety, they should be willing to disregard a bit of testimony to get it.

It's insane that confessions are admissible at all really, since they are almost always false.

lurker14··on Why Should I Care That No One’s Reading Dzhokhar Tsarnaev His Miranda Rights?
Indeed. " The commitment to this rule is so strong that the Supreme Court has recognized only one exception to the Miranda rule"

So, not much of a commitment at all. I am so committed to my wife that I only recognize one exception to my marriage vows: if I get a chance with a really attractive woman, then not only can I do it, but I can charge my wife for the cost of dinner.

lurker14··on Yahoo shuts down six products
Yahoo engineers may have verified that none of the users of these products have a vacation scheduled in Yahoo Calendar, which will presumably be the last property to shut down, for this reason.
lurker14··on What Was on the First SAT?
Interesting that it has a Linguistics section, as in the International Linguistics Olympiad, but not seen on a modern SAT or high school classroom. http://www.ioling.org/problems/samples/

I suppose that morphed in to the "logic puzzles" found on the modern LSAT.

lurker14··on Physicist proposes new way to think about intelligence
It would be interesting if someone other than the author submitter had that opinion. Nice astroturf attempt, though, alexwg/alexvr.
lurker14··on Physicist proposes new way to think about intelligence
"Keep your options open" is also called "analysis paralysis" when it is unwise.
lurker14··on Richard Stallman response to Boston Police efforts
Today's effort was actual security.
lurker14··on Richard Stallman response to Boston Police efforts
What's the maximum reasonable spend to catch a bomber, for an efficient force? $1M? $100k?

A large part of the expense was due to the successful effort to apprehend him without killing him or bystanders.

Tweets aren't precisely geolocated, so that's not really relevant.

lurker14··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
Simple experiment. Make a website with 3 buttons, and invite 10K people to visit. Make strong assurances of anonymity: and independent 3rd party will select the participants, logs will be destroyed, etc:

* Bill my credit card $20, donate to a pool to send to http://www.againstmalaria.com or somesuch. * Spend $20 of the researchers' money on fresh vegetables, and throw them in the trash. * Do nothing.

lurker14··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
People who use the terms "champagne socialist" or "bleeding heart liberal" as insults are fellow rich people who feel socially threatened by the people they insult.
lurker14··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
Before when? Maybe a few years ago was better. But 50 years? 100? No way.
lurker14··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
And the rest of us are well within our rights to not tolerate those people.
lurker14··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
No one is immune to everything forever -- not even billionaire Steve Jobs. your friend wasn't poor before his seizure, but the seizure knocked him down.

And of course several countries in the world do provide for the disabled. Even the US provides some support.

lurker14··on Google App Engine – SMS and Voice Integration With Twilio
Google Groups website is broken, so that thread is not readable.

lurker14··on Google was worth 1,838,389 workers in 1998, maybe
Incorrect example. Your $4000 hand-carved peruvian phone was worth that, since you bought it.
lurker14··on Do Masculine Names Help Female Lawyers Become Judges? Evidence from S. Carolina
Changing a boy's name to Sue, however, is known to lead to very positive outcomes. There was even a poem/song written about it.
lurker14··on Why I left Google (2012)
Google Now shows unsolicited restaurant recommendations. They might not be paid (I don't know), but they are certainly ads.
lurker14··on Why I left Google (2012)
My Chromebook and Nexus are full of ads.
lurker14··on Why I left Google (2012)
If they are hearing the same complaints murmured (muted, more anonymized and filtered) inside the company, but saying, "whatevs, they'll stay for the paycheck", and people start walking away from the paycheck and announcing it, it might sink in.

Of course, when leaving Google for Microsoft, it's hard to claim that culture/mission/vision are really the reason for leaving, as opposed to: MSFT offered $X,000, and GOOG managers said "you're not worth that to us"

lurker14··on Run sudo -k, set your clock to 01.01.1970, run sudo su and boom you're root
Why does "sudo -k" still exist, when it has obvious risks and is superseded by "sudo -K".

Why does 'sudo -k' not check to see if a timestamp exists, and avoid creating one if it doesn't yet exist?

lurker14··on The best programmers are the quickest to Google

lurker14··on Disqus bait and switch, now with ads
I am curious if all the "free-then-ads" defenders in this thread are (a) purveyors of "free-then-ads" businesses defending their business. (b) young or jaded people who really have grown accustomed to this tactic

Option (a) is Annoying, unpleasant, and bordering on astroturfing, but understandable

Option (b) is sad.

lurker14··on Amazon joins Walmart in push for online sales tax
Amazon really doesn't have any competitors in the mail order business. Any would-be competitors are partners/clients.
lurker14··on Disqus bait and switch, now with ads
Right, that's what "bait and switch" means.
