lunfard000··on $50 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 comes with a lower price and a tweaked, cheaper CPU
S3 is way better than the Pico.
lunfard000··on $50 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 comes with a lower price and a tweaked, cheaper CPU
the ecosystem will catch up eventually, keep building it around a public company is terrible idea. Raspberry is overestimating their value.
lunfard000··on OpenAI Acquires Multi
This one kinda makes sense, buy a multiplayer desktop app and add ChatGPT as a default player. I dont think they care too much about the "human" collaboration. API's are much harder to sell than fancy apps.
lunfard000··on ESP32-S3 has a few SIMD instructions
maybe I am missing something but isn't it barely faster than the offical ESP32_JPG? But fair enough, didn't know than JPEG decoding on MCUs is a widespread thing.
lunfard000··on Apple Joins the SeL4 Foundation
But they keep accepting PR, shouldn't they tag from now and then so people know what is "stable"?
lunfard000··on Apple M4 benchmarks suggest it is the new single-core performance champ
but consumers do? (almost) Nobody will pay apple level prices for something that has less software support and, overall, a worse experience than on macos. TBH, other than gaming, not sure why anyone is paying 1k+ for a Windows laptop.
lunfard000··on Apple Joins the SeL4 Foundation
the project seems active but last (github) release was 3 years ago?
lunfard000··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Prob beacuse they are like super-behind in the cloud space, it is not like they wouldn't like to sell the service. They ignored photos privacy quite a few times in the icloud.
lunfard000··on ESP32-S3 has a few SIMD instructions
And the author is not documenting them either, just announcing his new niche library. It is not like disassembling a few functions to prove that they exist is dark magic. I just don't see any value in the article.
lunfard000··on ESP32-S3 has a few SIMD instructions
Was it a secret? You could have guessed that something advertised [0] for "AI" had some kind of SIMD. Even ChatGPT 3.5 can give relevant code to use "AI" features [1].

lunfard000··on Xmake: A cross-platform build utility based on Lua
You are making it sound like it was a compilation process optimization, but it is just CI thing.
lunfard000··on Xmake: A cross-platform build utility based on Lua
Now if only MS would fix VSCode[0] :'( .Come on, the feature if more than half a decade old and this point.

lunfard000··on Xmake: A cross-platform build utility based on Lua
I mean, if it supports vcpkg (which is also cross-platform) natively then this should be trivial, am I missing something?
lunfard000··on Walmart is migrating the remaining F# code into Java
I dont know their needs, but last time I tried to do a computer-vision project on C#, all libraries in Nugets where shitty wrappers for cloud solutions or just paid libraries (last update to OpenCV is 7 years old).
lunfard000··on Nvidia bans using translation layers for CUDA software to run on other chips
I dont think China cares too much about what NVIDIA thinks considering the ban in place.
lunfard000··on Nvidia bans using translation layers for CUDA software to run on other chips
wouldn't that require breaking the ABI? Many enterprise wont be happy if they do so. Also, there is not way to prevent using old cuda compilers.
lunfard000··on Walmart is migrating the remaining F# code into Java
Wouldn't C# be the most reasonable option if so? Maybe they did the math and the .NET ecosystem is much more expensive than Java? Even ignoring MS cost, most 3rd party libraries on .NET usually require a license.
lunfard000··on YouTube's search function is atrocious now [video]
NewPipe search just works perfectly. I gave up searching anything on youtube.
lunfard000··on So You Want to Ship a Command-Line Tool for macOS (2022)
Personally, it always run fine at the beginning until it isnt and then you have to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what is wrong. For desktop that is it, servers can just run 24/7 without problems (mine just run containers).

Plasma looks pretty good but is not nowhere as good as window's.

I heard that they fixed power management but haven't tried myself.

My last point is that hyper-v got soo good with GPU partitioning and can be fully managed using type-safe Powershell.

lunfard000··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
In my experience, ChatGPT is better at managing corner cases than your normal SO or book example.
lunfard000··on AI rejection letter for being born on the wrong date
Maybe the LLM was prompt to write a rejection letter based on the cv and job description and the model couldn't find anything wrong and made stuff up.
lunfard000··on Programming on Parallel Machines; GPU, Multicore, Clusters and More
I dont expect a new PL to replace a library anytime soon.
lunfard000··on Zen 5's Leaked Slides
I think simpler cpu meant to simplify x86, like the x86-s proposal [0]

lunfard000··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
Hopefully this is the AlexNet of the superconductors :fingers-crossed:
lunfard000··on ASUS to manufacture and sell Intel’s NUC products
Much better as home-servers (450~ euros for a barebone 1340p is a pretty good deal). They have really good IO and linux support.
lunfard000··on MutexProtected: A C++ Pattern for Easier Concurrency
maybe add SerenityOS to the title? Almost sure that lock_guard is the ideomatic way to do this on cpp, not buying the "forget to lock".
lunfard000··on 140 Megapixel Picture of the Sun
Anecdotally, Argentina tried it[0]. The project was sold to Peron as way to create artificial suns.

lunfard000··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
you could argue that this LLM's will benefit more users than the produced value itself lost on sea of SEO garbage. But my point is that the openness wont stop because people will still need to show their craft for better employment opportunities.
lunfard000··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
Let's not pretend that is just altruism why people "open-source" their art or code. Most of them do it to get noticed.
lunfard000··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
in the other hand this will enable developers without art skills to produce their indie games with a professional-looking art on their own.
