lunchbucket··on PSSA: A non-transformer language model written from scratch in Rust
They aren't using Rust for speed.
lunchbucket··on 1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide are caused by infections, study finds
The risk is compounding, so no, centuries is not on the table without fully swapping bodies.
lunchbucket··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
You'll find similar documentation anytime a language or framework or other systems software ships a new major version. It doesn't seem like the way to prompt Opus has changed all that much. Certainly not enough to require a "totally different prompting technique."
lunchbucket··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Totally true. But the bottom line is that one of these things kills you and the other doesn't. That doesn't mean it's safe but I do think it is important not to imply they are equally harmful or that nicotine products are carcinogenic. Nicotine isn't carcinogenic and they are not in the same ballpark of harm.
lunchbucket··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Nicotine is not carcinogenic and neither are nicotine products like patches or gum. Nicotine products are distinct from tobacco products, and tobacco contains a lot more than nicotine, and that cocktail is both carcinogenic and more addictive. That's why nicotine products are used for nicotine cessation, they are strictly less harmful and easier to quit. (That doesn't make nicotine safe but it's in an entirely different league than tobacco. Nicotine products almost certainly won't be the reason you die, whereas tobacco products often are.)
lunchbucket··on LGBT tolerance slumps in the Netherlands as debate turns vicious
> Interracial marriage has been allowed in many places (if not most places) throughout history, and even female suffrage was a thing in some polities.

You do understand that they were referring to the places it was disallowed? LGTBQ people and same sex marriage have also been tolerated in some times and places (even before the 70s).

lunchbucket··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
I'm sure some people acclimate to it but if you give it a try I think you'll find first your throat will get burned, then you'll start to cough more and more, and eventually you'll throw up. And I think GP was suggesting that, beyond acclimating, there's also other demands on your time and you usually can't smoke through them all.
lunchbucket··on Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)
Obviously, and they deserve no credit for the bare minimum. But if you imagine them doing the opposite and not taking any steps to rectify the error, that would clearly be closer to a "coverup".
lunchbucket··on Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)
And if they had instead chosen to remain silent on the origin of the code, how would you have characterized their actions then?
lunchbucket··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
Not sure what you're talking about. Playing games has been a research topic in AI for much longer than transformer models have existed.

lunchbucket··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
But it's at least plausible the person you're berating is responsible for the error.
lunchbucket··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
That's interesting but raised the same question, why berate a machine? Either the agent is not a person, in which case, anything it does wrong is your fault. Or it is a person, it can be blamed for mistakes, but then we can't in good conscious use it as a tool.

lunchbucket··on Pokémon Go Scans Trained the Navigation Tech for Military Drones
It's bizarre to me that you aren't acknowledging the context these remarks were made in, I don't understand where you're coming from at all. Like, you've seen what article this thread is discussing right...?
lunchbucket··on Claude Fable is relentlessly proactive
They told you what they know. Maybe there's enterprise contracts with different prices, maybe there aren't - but evidently this person either isn't aware or can't disclose what they know, and it seems like it's the first one, so what do you want from them?
lunchbucket··on Pokémon Go Scans Trained the Navigation Tech for Military Drones
It's silly to compare an arbitrary connection to a non-arbitrary connection and as if it makes the former arbitrary. You're doubling down on a category error.
lunchbucket··on Stripe is friendly to “friendly fraud”
The odds that someone meaningfully reflects on their behavior when you tell them they're what's wrong with HN are pretty slim. You can substantially increase those odds by being more neutral about it.

It's entirely possible HN is dying, HN won't last forever and dang has said he is very concerned about the direction he sees the commentary going. But it's also entirely possible that the quality waxes and wanes primarily due to internal factors and that political tensions, AI bots and slop submissions, etc are external factors straining HN that will eventually be resolved.

Either way, the "real HN" I find is still here if you look for it, and I have always seen people on here who complain about the quality of the site but when you go to their comment history (I have not looked at your comment history to be clear) you see they're constantly getting into arguments and architecting a miserable experience for themselves. One's experience on HN is largely what they make it.

At any rate I appreciate you considering.

lunchbucket··on Stripe is friendly to “friendly fraud”
If you care about the quality of the site, consider the guidelines about not responding to a bad comment with a worse one and not griping about how HN has gotten terrible or turned into reddit or what there you. Downvote, flag, and move on to better discussion, and you'll spend a lot more time engaging and contributing to good discussions.

Contributing to good discussions is the highest leverage way to promote the quality of the site. Spending time in poor discussions is what makes it feel like HN has gone to crap.

lunchbucket··on Dropbox CEO Drew Houston to step down
They understand, they just don't care and shouldn't care. It is always jarring to encounter someone with a different life experience, but processing that is your business. They don't need to spend the rest of their life crafting their words to avoid making people uncomfortable.

It's the same principle as someone in public when they're disfigured. You just became aware of something traumatic that happened to this person, and it is totally understandable to feel uncomfortable. But they are just existing in public. They have no obligation to present themselves in a way that avoids making you uncomfortable, and doing that everyday of their lives would be exhausting and wasteful.

In that example it is immediately obvious that it would be inappropriate to ask them to cover up. But it's the same principle, either way.

lunchbucket··on Scientists solve 200-year-old puzzle of how tobacco plants make nicotine
Becoming addicted to a substance is harm, so being addictive is a risk.

Nicotine is not harmless. It is a teratogen, it may exacerbate cancers you already have, it can harm brain development in young users, it can cause high blood pressure, etc. And as stated previously - it is not good to be addicted to something! That is a bad health outcome in and of itself!

I occasionally use synthetic nicotine products, I don't judge people for using them, but let's not misrepresent what this is. It is a drug. If you take a look at the risks and decide it's worth it more power to you. But don't tell people it's harmless, that is dangerous misinformation.

lunchbucket··on Scientists solve 200-year-old puzzle of how tobacco plants make nicotine
Smoking/smoke inhalation is not safe, it leads to all the bad outcomes you mention, and I encourage everyone to seek out alternatives like oral nicotine pouches and cannabis gummies. They will almost certainly improve your healthspan and may well improve your lifespan. I personally stopped smoking because my wife told me she wanted me around longer. I am all aboard the "smoking is bad for you" train.

But the role of the smoke itself is overemphasized which leads to a false sense of security. Switching from cigarettes to dip does lead to a significant improvement in mortality. But the real step change is moving to oral nicotine pouches, gum, patches, etc.

I'd also point out the risk from campfires and from cigarettes is not at all comparable. They are several orders of magnitude apart. Even smoking marijuana isn't nearly as dangerous as smoking tobacco. (Smoking marijuana is not safe, that just goes to show how ridiculously dangerous cigarettes are.)

lunchbucket··on Scientists solve 200-year-old puzzle of how tobacco plants make nicotine
It's a serious concern and switching to synthetic nicotine products may prolong your life. All tobacco products are highly carcinogenic. Contrary to what was said earlier it is not really about the smoking (though of course that makes things worse).

Nicotine products aren't safe; they are highly addictive and may exacerbate tumors that are already there. But they're far less addictive than tobacco products and they probably won't kill you.

lunchbucket··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Maybe you should look into where statistics that are "going around" are sourced from. This seems to be something an anti-immigration lobby cooked to in 2014, which was an artifact of their analysis; they considered workers aged 16-65, and the effect disappeared if you considered workers of all ages.

Trump resurrected it in 2024 to claim that all job growth under Biden had gone to immigrants. It wasn't true then either.

Just so you know, I thought your project was cool, I upvoted it, but I had to retract my upvote after seeing your behavior here in the comments.

If you want to get your work in front of people you will need to learn either to ignore these comments or to respond to criticism in a mature and professional manner. The people who will have the most valuable feedback for you will see this kind of behavior and decide engaging with you is a waste of time, and the only people who will stick around are bullies who enjoy upsetting you.

lunchbucket··on AI Self-preferencing in Algorithmic Hiring: Empirical Evidence and Insights
> If I had to revise me opinion, I guess I'd say I now no longer believe you didn't read the paper, but instead that you don't know HOW to read scientific papers.

This is the kind of opinion you ought to keep to yourself, because it's inflammatory and uninteresting. There's no discussion to be had about your views on their competence. Downvote comments you think are bad without centering some other person's alleged failings in the conversation.

No, consent was assumed. He makes it very clear that he doesn't ask for consent. "I don't even wait." "You can do anything." We don't even need to speculate about what he meant; he assaulted E. Jean Carroll. This is open and shut.
