luminouslow··on Will workers hired as Remote all be laid off in next wave?
>not only can't do anything about it, but you'll never know.

And what would you do if you are there in person? Challenge them to a duel?

This whole scenario sounds very paranoid to me. In my experience if you treat people decently and perform OK most co-workers won't talk negatively about you behind your back. Or maybe I just never noticed... it did have 0 impact on me though if it happened.

luminouslow··on Will workers hired as Remote all be laid off in next wave?
> remote work, overall, is inefficient

I dont see how one anonymous poll at a FAANG company proves that. Just because you are doing busywork doesn't mean it's efficient. FWIW I agree with your other points.

>the number of ways of earning a living shrinks

Is this true? it seems there are new ways cropping up all the time

luminouslow··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
you are reading something into my comment that is not there - I was saying immortal life would be a meaningless existence and no panacea to the human condition. Trying to escape death is not only futile, it is a waste of life. You are right of course, we should all touch grass more (I.e. really live) instead of trying to "solve" the human condition.
luminouslow··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
Death is the beginning and end of everything. There is more to existence than your ego.

More time is fine but don't waste it by trying to avoid death (protip: you can't)

luminouslow··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
I have no problem with prolonging life but trying to become immortal is dumb (and you will fail)

I will spend my time living instead of trying to avoid death.

luminouslow··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
Death is not bad - without it life makes no sense. Being 30 forever and immortal would be my definition of hell. Death is doing a great job, leave it alone.

Chugging 300 pills per day - you will still die.

It is inevitable.

I didn't know the details of the case or am a lawyer; it just seemed this was what op was talking about. but looking into it the case seems pretty clear cut.

the death sentence is still a barbaric practice.

luminouslow··on Gene-Engineered Mouth Bacteria
I just cant take this seriously. Why are Americans so afraid of death?

You missed the second part:

luminouslow··on Ask HN: Why isn't remote work advertised as a pro environment initiative?
I don't know about you but we still use the internet/zoom etc. in the office so you still need datacenters

>lack of commuting incentivizes un-environmental and inefficient suburban sprawl

I dont understand this point, IMO commuting leads to more suburban sprawl? Also i think this is a very USA-centric problem.

luminouslow··on Ask HN: Why isn't remote work advertised as a pro environment initiative?
>heating an office space with 500+ people is much more efficient than heating 500 individual houses

Citation needed. I would argue its very hard to make any general statement about this. In my case the office is much more wasteful than the space I use for remote work for a multitude of reasons.

luminouslow··on Ask HN: Is NPM Down?
Nope works for me (in Turkey)

Status all green too: https://status.npmjs.org/

luminouslow··on Ask HN: Is there editors and IDE crisis?
Maybe im smoothbrained but VSCode works great for me and I mainly write Go. Lots of co-workers use GoLand and are very happy with it. A few are using vim and among those three I wonder what you are looking for? What bugs did you enounter with Vscode that made it unusable for you?
luminouslow··on Foreign Dispatch: Ideas from code editors applied to foreign language writing
Love the idea! Are you planning to keep the core tool stack OSS? Would love to contribute to growing the project in the long term. I imagine there could be avenues for monetization while keeping it OSS (e.g. Licence for business use)

>it’s ok for a business to let’s it’s competitors take its clients and market share?

I wonder when businesses are OK with that? Seems like something you would like to avoid always, not just when "at war" (whatever that means - did someone declare war on you?)

luminouslow··on Peacetime CEO / Wartime CEO (2011)
Im not saying we should ban any phrases, just using war talk when the worst that happens to you is you got to find another job is silly IMO. Feel free to use any ohrases you like, this is just my personal opinion, not here to police anyones speech.
luminouslow··on Peacetime CEO / Wartime CEO (2011)
Companies often seem to employ terms related to armed conflict to heighten the sense of urgency and action.

In reality noone working at a software company is "getting their asses shot off" or even "goes to war".

Stop using silly terms like that in business. We are not here to murder people or commit genocide, using this vernacular diminishes and marginalizes the immense suffering of humans caught in an actual war for any reason.

I get it, war seems "cool" from far away and action movies/games, but I can assure you it is not.

luminouslow··on Growing a home apothecary
Agreed! In a lot of areas that knowledge is still alive and well, not least in cooking. I think food can still have a lot of healing properties.

Often modern medicine is based on these plants. And of course there are modern treatments that go way beyond what we were able to achieve with just plant-based medicine.

luminouslow··on Growing a home apothecary
Wow I did not know that list was on wikipedia - thanks for sharing
luminouslow··on Growing a home apothecary
Yes, what do you think they make modern medicine out of? Most of the time a plant is the base for it.

I would say it depends who you are, what you look like and where you come from.

But as a super privileged white German the US border control (around 2009) was definitely the harshest I have experienced.

I travelled to many places in Africa, Asia and South America as well, never had been questioned and probed like i was in the USA. Ofc i cant speak to the experience in EU.

Edit: added date

luminouslow··on Homeland security reaches the anus (2007)
I mean what else can you do except never travelling again to places like the US
luminouslow··on Homeland security reaches the anus (2007)
Good luck trying to enter the USA again after being denied entry for something like this.

As you rightly pointed out our reords will be forgotten much more quickly because clay tablets and animal hides can last for centuries. None of our currently employed methods would last nearly as long.
luminouslow··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
Also consider my situation which is even better:

- no deliveries (i only order to a dropoff or buy in person)

- no pets

- able to exercise and clear my mind during small breaks

- able to have a homecooked meal or go to my favourite places for lunch

- __not__ talking about work on breaks is actually a huge plus for me

luminouslow··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
Another anecdote: I love WFH but i still want to spend about 20% of the time in the office, just to see and talk to people face2face.
luminouslow··on Growing a home apothecary
In medieval Europa monasteries were required since Pope Gregor to grow a number of medicinal plants to ensure that the population has access to medicine. While i am not an opponent of modern medicine, it is kind of sad how little modern humans use the remedies nature provides.

Search for monastery medicine for more info.
