luminary··on Amazon to compete with Zynga, Playfish? (acc. to this job description)
A quick search shows that they are also hiring front-end game developers, designers etc. This could be very interesting.
luminary··on Recycling Capital: The Key To The Startup Economy
This is quite true. My Portland State advisor (ex-Bay Areaite) and his friends and angle investing everywhere but Portland.

On a side note: any Bay Area Portlanders on HN?

luminary··on Balsamiq knows how to win people
3/4ths of the serial key is already blurred.
luminary··on Balsamiq knows how to win people
This was posted on HN earlier: Donating Your Software: A Whole Lot of WIN! http://blogs.balsamiq.com/product/2009/08/13/donating/
luminary··on Ask HN: What do you drink?
Coffee: Stumptown (recently moved to SF from Portland)

Tea: Peet's Assam Extra Fancy

luminary··on Ask HN: Tracking VC-funding and IPOs in real-time?
Sorry, not necessarily in real-time but I believe the ones that were posted here offered near-to-real-time.
luminary··on Ask HN:Who's Looking For a Cofounder? (October 2010 Edition)
Wouldn't it have been great (in terms of equity, leverage etc.) if you were at Google (search) in 2001-03 or Foursquare (location) in 2008?

What we are trying to solve:

- Given relevant experience, find and apply for a job in a field that's soon (within a few months to a year) going to be "hot."

- Given somewhat relevant experience, find and apply for a job in a field that will act as an intermediary to a future "hot" field.

.

LinkedIn, Indeed/SimplyHired etc. haven't concentrated on this problem space yet.

We (one tech, one design co-founder + advisor) are working on solving many such hard problems that involve everything from trending, forecasting to decision analysis. Email me if you're interested in being a tech co-founder: aha.kalopsia@gmail.com

luminary··on The BlackBerry PlayBook Doesn't Exist
The author is wrong. Why so serious? It was nothing more than a tease to excite the platform developers. Proper announcement/demo will happen at an appropriate time.

- Attended the keynote + currently working at RIM as an intern

luminary··on Facebook's phone as obvious as nose on your face
The mobile versions of FB etc. won't cut it if the next 5-10 years are going to be all about mobile. And thus the need for a true mobile-only social app or "social OS" pending already existing vertical data.
luminary··on Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone
If you think about it for a second, we still don't have that great mobile-only social app yet. The mobile versions of FB etc. won't cut it if the next 5-10 years are going to be all about mobile.

IMO, FB is extending its vertical with a mobile-only social app AKA the "FB OS."

luminary··on Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone
I know from a FOAF^n that FB-mail is real and they are planning to launch soon.
luminary··on Ask HN: What do you want to tell Microsoft?
I don't think you have any clue on what you're talking about.

>>There's no way to have a logical public discussion with the teabaggers. The best we can do is to mimic them. Show them a mirror and hopefully some will realize how ridiculous they actually are... Or maybe they won't even realize that they're being mocked, which could be even more awesome.

This brushed generalization (notwithstanding how "funny" it may be) from both sides of the political aisle is what's wrong with this country.

luminary··on Ask HN: Should I put my startup info in the CV while applying at a bigco?
This is a very good alternative.
luminary··on Ask HN: Should I put my startup info in the CV while applying at a bigco?
Absolutely, the bigcos (not Google) I'll be applying at probably won't appreciate my extra-curricular activities..
luminary··on Ask HN: Should I put my startup info in the CV while applying at a bigco?
Very good point and this sums up my mind. Thanks!
luminary··on RIM Must Switch To Android Now, Before It's Too Late
RIM has an R&D location in Redwood City since 2008.
luminary··on Windows Phone 7 in-depth preview
> In contrast Widows7 mobile UI is a confusing mess and very bland to be honest. There no "Wow" factor.

And that's the point, Albert Shum, a Nike-alum and now one of the folks behind this UI, is making. It's less about chrome/gloss but more about typography. Personally, I like it a lot. The "WP7 version of" Metro-UI seems to be inspired by direction signs (for travelers) you see at airports, train stations etc. that help people find their way.

I'm waiting for "HN pedagogues" to jump in and say MS is again copying Apple. Oh nevermind. Someone already did. Sigh.

luminary··on Ask HN: Value of a second MS?
I'd go with a PhD program that has a Master's exist. (You will still apply and get admitted as a PhD student with full funding.) This helps if you're bored with the faculty, dept. etc. or a company wouldn't mind converting your internship to a permanent position.
luminary··on Dropbox Startup Lessons Learned
I'm wondering if anyone uses/has used Syncplicity? IMO, it's better than Dropbox.

luminary··on Is Silicon Valley Dead?
I live in MTV. I'll buy you a beer.

We should do a HN meetup (doesn't have to be startup-specific).

luminary··on Ask HN: How to get a U.S. Visa (and work on your own startup)?
Disclaimer: I'm an F1 Intl. student in the US.

USCIS requires H1B petitions filed for an employee to be paid by the petitioner (employer). All those shady sweat shops who used to take poor Joe Schmoes' money for filing got raided big time in NJ and other areas.

luminary··on Hacker News Directory: Meet people from other companies
I think you should allow an option for secondary email address for communication. I don't want to use my corporate or school id for HN-related stuff.
luminary··on Ask HN: How to get a U.S. Visa (and work on your own startup)?
Your other option is to apply for an F1 student visa and enroll as a full-time student. If you have money and decent academic profile then this is one of the last route to extend your stay, take classes in fall and spring, intern in summer (and if possible, in spring too while taking classes if the company/startup is based locally), and try to graduate in 1 or 1.5 years and then apply for OPT and find a job.

If you're applying for a PhD, chances are that you will get a nice RA position and everything will be covered..You can always leave your academics if you get a job after a year -- which might look extremely bad on you but it's you first and then comes the rest of the world. You can always take part-time classes after you get a job to make up to them.

luminary··on Ask HN: How to get a U.S. Visa (and work on your own startup)?
Off-topic: If the OP is a male and gets married to another male (who is a citizen) in Massachusetts, he still won't get a green card because federal law defines marriage as a "legal union exclusively between one man and one woman." Shucks..
luminary··on Ask HN: How to get a U.S. Visa (and work on your own startup)?
> Some companies, esp those "specializing" in visa workers might ask you to bear the cost.

This is highly illegal. Don't do this. Don't go through all these shady "consulting" sweat shops. My suggestion is to look for jobs at non-profit institutions such as national labs, hospitals/medical centers (Mayo Clinic etc.)/university medical centers, universities (all state universities), university owned research labs (like ARUP etc.). They will sponsor your H1B (Non-Profit) which has NO quota. Search for more on this.(There's H1B Profit and H1B Non-Profit)

If you're really that desperate, search for jobs at the above entities that are based in the mid-west and south. They need a lot of smart people but not everyone's willing to move to their shitty place. Your immediate goal is to survive in the States as a legal non-resident so don't be too picky on Alabama and the bible belt.

luminary··on Michael Arrington just moved to Seattle
He should have considered moving to Portland. Entrepreneur Magazine last year ranked PDX as the second best place to start a "small-business." However, that doesn't mean there are more startups (or more VC deals take place) in Portland than Seattle.

luminary··on Apple also fired a Test Engineer for showing Woz an iPad
Woz: "I myself never prod Apple friends into saying things about unreleased Apple products. I'm not in the group where early knowledge equates to value. I don't play the rumor mill game. So I had little interest in seeing this iPad beyond a couple of minutes.

In my opinion, Apple was not hurt by my being shown this iPad. And if the employee who showed it to me believed that he could show it after April 3, then that's another factor.

I did describe this to Steve Jobs the night of the iPad introduction and he said "so it's no big deal." We talked about family things after that for a short while. But that engineer did get fired."
