luma··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
I didn't use the word LLM. I'm talking AI capability, you're focused on this or that current approach to AI. I think it's fair to assume that the approach will change as new ideas are learned, new and more hardware will be purchased and applied to the problem, and then capabilities will (for now) continue on their exponential curve, same as it has gone for the past several years.

These things are knocking down Millennium Prize problems while a substantial subset of commenters here are still thinking about stochastic parrots.

luma··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Some version of this claim has been made for the past 4 years. There's a data cliff, there's no more compute to buy, the financials don't make sense and all of these orgs will be out of business by end of quarter.

Not once has any of these predictions come true, the pace of progress has continued on it's exponential trajectory since ChatGPT first came to the public's attention.

So why now? What is special about today that suggests all of this is coming to a screeching halt despite all evidence to the contrary?

luma··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
Any code I didn't write is arbitrary code. At some point I'm left to trust someone or run no software at all.
luma··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
There is a flip side to this - is vim encrypting this data it keeps forever? If I delete something I consider sensitive, I might unwittingly be recording that presumed-deleted piece of data to my user profile somewhere to be deleted never.
luma··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Thank God, a response which addresses none of the content of the parent post which is now flagged for pointing out current facts of the case, along with anything else in the thread which doesn't align with "AI BAD".

HN has fallen far.

luma··on An agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot
Such things would already be known in its training, eg https://duyet.github.io/llm-over-dns
luma··on WaveDigger: Dig into wireless signals to discover their physical locations
Looks like an open version of SkyHook from way back in 2003: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyhook_Wireless

For a while they had a paid program, I had a Windows Mobile app I could run with an external GPS dongle that would record wifi APs and location, upload to skyhook, who would occasionally cut me a check for my trouble. I made tens of dollars!

luma··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
The two reasons the author lists for not sharing their source code now were both true pre-AI. Open sourcing allowed others to review your software for their own nefarious purposes and (as anyone who has ever maintained a reasonably popular repo knows) results in a lot of PRs that may be of low quality.

I contribute to open source because open source is how I learned to do what I do and it only seems fair to give back. AI changes absolutely nothing about this for me.

luma··on Dario, Please
The 80 years thing actually happened. One can argue about MAD and the nuclear threat, but we don't have to guess at what happened.

It worked.

luma··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
Same answer. You could enter 386 protected mode with less than 640kb installed.
luma··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
That isn't true to my knowledge for old DOS applications (including games). 640kb was the upper limit, not the lower bound.
luma··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
The flip side is that the Anthropic researcher is clearly pushing the case against Open AI and one might have reason to suspect their motivation and version of events for the same reasons.

What a mess.

luma··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
We're all out here just scratchin at our own itches brother :D

In case you run across this, here's how it works: https://youtu.be/1wn-YWItuSI

luma··on Ask HN: Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results?
decompiling the apk is where you might trip up against DMCA etc. I've been doing this exact same thing with great success, if there's a mobile app you have the keys to unlock any bluetooth device (and maybe turn it into a Home Assistant component while you're at it).
luma··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
Extending this work: https://github.com/aderusha/dewalt_wtc

MEMS vibration sensor to stick to a sander or saw etc that can control power on an attached dust collector. Most of the work is focused on low power for year+ battery life and a weird idea for end user input that may or may not work out well. Got device on bench but the first time bring up is going to take some time that I'm leaving for tomorrow.

I now have Astra to review 5.6s work, no glaring errors found.

luma··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
Flying home today and got DHL notification that my vibe PCBs are on my porch. Now to try to program, bring up, and see if it works this weekend. $178 for 5 assembled units from PCBway to run this dumb experiment.
luma··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Simply put, batteries are heavy.
luma··on GPT-6 Astra
For whom? That is a fantastically ill-defined test. Everyone here is comfortable throwing around this or that is or isn't AGI which is fun because, at the same time, nobody seems to have a testable definition.

It makes either position pointless to argue.

luma··on GPT-6 Astra
What test do you propose as the actual go/no-go gauge to verify if some model is or is not AGI?
luma··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Hybrid after the first 125 miles, total range 500 miles. Their problem is diversions - an incident at the destination airport may mean an passenger aircraft may need to land at an airport which could be a couple hundred miles away. The hybrid powerplant throws the fuel efficiency numbers off so goal is not to run it unless needed, but they could not get certification without it.
luma··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
Your argument is directed at Windows, not PowerShell. The shell is just a shell, if a certain thing you're looking to configure doesn't have an easy cmdlet, that doesn't mean powershell is bad, just that MS didn't give you the easy button. Similar to many unix tools, some of what you need to interact with has a dedicated CLI, other things have you poking at the configuration database directly (ini or yaml or whatever for unix, registry for windows).

If you don't like the Windows style of configuration, run powershell on linux - it's awesome there too!

luma··on Path to Astra: critical capabilities and frontier safeguards
You're using "ex-AI employee" as an appeal to authority. This same person also made some other predictions recently which turned into the single largest hedge fund loss in history.

Maybe we should consider his other predictions in light of the ones he made later and which had $B consequences attached.

luma··on Open Battery Information
looks neat, read the page and i still have no idea what it does. arduino project with a few resistors, cool. something about reading BMS. which ones, which protocol(s), how does it get wired up?

fed all this to the robot to find that it's targeted at Makita battery packs. the word "makita" never once appears in the front page and it seems like a pretty important detail.

luma··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
One thing I've found - these things are pretty good at troubleshooting desktop problems. If the codex app is running slow, I'll note that it shouldn't be, and also you might get more traction than you'd expect asking the codex app why it's slow.
luma··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
They're also great at powershell, you just need to tell it to do so. sh is neat but it's 55 years old, there are newer and better shell environment concepts out there and the robots can handle them well too, try it some time!
luma··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
That is a preposterous claim, but maybe you're being sincere. If so, can you provide an example?
luma··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
Demand crunch comes from the customer. All HBM and DDR5 wafer capacity is sold out through 2027 and all three vendors are booking 2028 capacity.

This was not created by the manufacturers.

luma··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
There are only 3 manufacturers (about to be 4 soon) total. This is a demand crunch the likes of which the market hasn't seen before, prices are doing the natural thing.
luma··on Findphone: Locate a nearby Bluetooth device by signal strength
