lukevdp··on Open source Kanban desktop app that runs parallel agents on every card
I don't think the same things that help humans help agents. Simplicity helps humans, for agents parsing complexity is a breeze.

Not saying code quality isn't important - it is. But I think what is described as quality code will change.

lukevdp··on LLMs are not a higher level of abstraction
This is really just arguing semantics. The reality is that programmers are working at a higher level than they were before. Call it whatever you want.
lukevdp··on Ask HN: When do you want to know you are dealing with real applicant?
Before even looking at the resume
lukevdp··on How can we take claims of AGI seriously if it can't even order a pizza?
Its getting pretty close. Chatgpt can easily figure out your order and find you a restaurant. It just can't do the last mile bit of placing the order itself.
lukevdp··on Show HN: I built a(nother) house optimized for LAN parties
Love the creativity and dedication to the project. And really cool house.
lukevdp··on How to make Product give a shit about your architecture proposal
"give all the info on your product"

Exactly except:

If you're a CEO, the info you care about is one set of info.

If you're a user, the info you care about is different.

If you're some other influencer, the info you care about is different again.

Everyone wants different sets of info. Good sales is figuring out what that is and giving it to you.

lukevdp··on Show HN: A source-available billing system I've spent 18 months building
Signed up for the trial, I get an empty screen that says "Environments". Can't seem to do anything!
lukevdp··on Show HN: Vapi – Convince our voice AI to give you the secret code
That was really cool.

It gave me a riddle for the first digit, but I repeated the riddle back to her which she took as the correct answer.

Then a 20 questions quiz for the second digit which was cool, then a series of clues for the last digit, the last of which was "the last digit is the sum of X and y".

Really fun conversational flow.

lukevdp··on Show HN: Workout.lol – a web app to easily create a workout routine
Looks great, but I just tried on my mobile and after selecting equipment, there's no way to get to the next step
lukevdp··on Ask HN: Is our product validated? Who's right in this situation
Seems to me you should setup SSO and do whatever compliance you need to do, and get those customers on board.
lukevdp··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
Sorry for your loss. It sounds like you had a very close relationship with him that must make it really hard.

I lost my dad 7 years ago last month, and it's been the hardest thing in my life. If it's any consolation for you, you will never stop missing him. This Reddit post really helped me during the really hard times https://www.reddit.com/r/GriefSupport/comments/d9685e/grief_...

lukevdp··on Meta threatens to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe
Not sure why this is getting downvoted, because it is 100% correct - the statement is a risk disclosure, not a threat
lukevdp··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
Yes it is, it depends on the efficacy of the vaccine and the transmissibility of the virus.
lukevdp··on Some experts suggest Omicron variant may have evolved in an animal host
The flu is seasonal, so the northern hemisphere looks at what flu is in the Southern Hemisphere during their flu season and vice versa.
lukevdp··on An update on our privacy sandbox commitments
I much prefer relevant ads to irrelevant ads
lukevdp··on Australia: 82K tests, 111 cases, 1 death, 900.000 people locked down
It’s way more than 900k locked down - Victoria, NSW and South Australia are locked down. That’s a sizeable chunk of the population.
lukevdp··on Ask HN: Does support and success should be one team?
In a small company they can be the same, but as you get more users, you would be wasting your customer success team because they’ll be spending all their time answering questions like “how do I add a contact”
lukevdp··on Ask HN: Does support and success should be one team?
Yes it should be separate. Support helps with the how, customer success helps with higher level strategic support, uncovering needs, upselling, etc. At a certain level, probably between 1-2m ARR, customer success becomes accretive.
lukevdp··on Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won't Go Away
> There is no such thing as not worshipping

Yes there is

lukevdp··on Pfizer and BioNTech Conclude Phase 3 Study of Covid-19 Vaccine Candidate
The vaccines on the market went through the same trial process as these new ones, just that these new ones did it quicker.
lukevdp··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
I would be surprised if they didn't specifically test all participants in the trial for covid antibodies, symptoms or not. Does anybody know what validation was done?
lukevdp··on Stripe migrates Stripe Subscriptions users to more expensive Stripe Billing
> Is there a cost-based rationale for doing a percentage-based pricing model, or is it really "because they can"?

It’s definitely because they can.

There is no rule that pricing must be cost based.

lukevdp··on Stripe migrates Stripe Subscriptions users to more expensive Stripe Billing
It’s not just dev time, that would be easy. It’s getting every customer to re-enter their credit card details which won’t happen without a significant uptick in arrears, and depending on the type of customer, churn.
lukevdp··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
RCT = randomised controlled trial - a trial where some test subjects are given the vaccine and some are given the vaccine, then you follow the subjects and see which ones get COVID and how bad.

There are already a bunch of vaccines going through this process.

Challenge trials is where you purposefully infect subjects. TheY are highlY controversial but according to Oxford, would speed up the research and they are planning to do one.

lukevdp··on What harm do minimum wages do?
When you’re talking about wage prices, definition 1 is the relevant definition.

Definition 1 includes both supply and demand. You have a worker willing to work for $50/hr and someone willing to pay them $50/hr.

Definition 2 is only taking into account demand. You have a supplier who has set their price, but no buyers at that level.

lukevdp··on What harm do minimum wages do?
I am not talking about the intrinsic worth of a human. I’m talking about the price of their labor. Someone’s labor being worth $50 or $5 is a function of supply and demand.
lukevdp··on What harm do minimum wages do?
Yes but it is wrong to do so because wages are not set only by the worth a worker is to a company. That is only one side of the equation (demand). The labour market also have a supply side component which is the ability for the company to find labour.
lukevdp··on What harm do minimum wages do?
Someone is not worth $50/hr if someone else is willing to do the same job with equal capability for $5/hr.
lukevdp··on Ask HN: Should a Startup in the messy middle change TOS on every turn?
Probably depends on your deal size and risk. If you are selling puppy photo software for $10/month it is a different situation to 200k enterprise deals.

Your contracts and insurance coverage exists to protect yourself from risk. Identify your risk (severity and probability of adverse events) and act appropriately.

lukevdp··on What's the point of a Covid-19 test that takes 19 days for results?
Is that actually a thing that states aren’t allowed to borrow?
