lukebitts··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
It’s a fact that before Covid we didn’t have a crisis for lack of beds (where I live) and after Covid we do. What hospitals like to do is irrelevant, I’m talking about reality
lukebitts··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
No it doesn’t. People have been smoking, drinking and being fat for decades now and we haven’t had a crisis or a lack of beds for the rest of the public.
lukebitts··on 9/11 changed architecture and urban design forever
Oh no, all I did was spread bullshit conspiracy theories, I wonder why I’m being downvoted!!!!
lukebitts··on Modern software development is cancer
Wow what a bunch of nonsense. I know this is a rant but the author gets so many things wrong I can’t respect their opinion at all
lukebitts··on A backlash against gender ideology is starting in universities
Obviously Karens are not subjected to oppression, woman may be oppressed, but Karens are not all woman and are not oppressed as a social class.

Though I supose from their point of view, asking for basic decency is akin to oppression. Fitting, considering the original topic.

lukebitts··on A backlash against gender ideology is starting in universities
Yes, I disagree with that definition of slur, the bar is too low if that's all it takes. In my opinion a history of oppression is what matters and if we go by how twitter uses a word, "Karen" and "Boomer" would be slurs too.
lukebitts··on A backlash against gender ideology is starting in universities
The n-word is a slur, yes, that has no bearing on whether other words are slurs or not. Do you have a point or should I just accept that whatever word you deem a slur, is one?
lukebitts··on A backlash against gender ideology is starting in universities
Is calling someone by their preferred pronouns as onerous as treating them like royalty to you? I see now why so many people make such a fuss about this.
lukebitts··on A backlash against gender ideology is starting in universities
It doesn't sound like that at all to me.

Also, they ARE trans-exclusionary and they ARE radical feminists. I don't buy that a simple description is a slur.

lukebitts··on Rust is not a company
I think that was bad phrasing on GP's part. Rust only allows breaking changes for edition changes, which are opt-in. Libraries in older (or newer) editions can still be used together in your project, no matter which edition you are using. Rust allows for breaking changes in a way that doesn't actually break anything.
lukebitts··on Why Go Is Not Good (2014)
Fair enough!
lukebitts··on Why Go Is Not Good (2014)
Is there something here that hasn't been said before? From skimming it just looks like the usual list of complaints we've seen a thousand times
lukebitts··on Artist says Capcom stole her photos for Resident Evil, Devil May Cry
A good library of references is very much worth the price, even these days where you can find anything on the internet.
lukebitts··on No evidence UFOs are alien craft, unclassified US intelligence report to reveal
I guess beings so strong and powerful that they would destroy us without a second thought, like we do to ants, would fall into the "Evil" category in my comment above.
lukebitts··on No evidence UFOs are alien craft, unclassified US intelligence report to reveal
Here's a fun answer: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/HowToInvad...

Just the "Motivation and Planning" category will reveal several reasons. My favorite is that there is almost no reason to go through the trouble of colonizing our planet, if you need any of our resources you can mine asteroids and no one will fight back. Unless of course the aliens are Evil.

lukebitts··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
I am able to define what those mean, yes. A family means “family” and a mermaid means “mermaid”. Same answer for the rest, none of your emoji examples are complicated to interpret unless you add text to accompany them, and even then, at most you are going to misinterpret their tone, not the specific emoji.

Wether we should devote time making sure they are the correct skin tone is orthogonal to my original comment.

lukebitts··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
You make it sound like interpreting emoji is nuclear physics. Most emoji have clear meanings, who is replacing language for emoji and what does that look like?
lukebitts··on Red and blue functions are a good thing
So are you arguing that the rust community shares one consciousness? Cause otherwise I don’t see your point
lukebitts··on Reddit’s most popular subreddits go private in protest against ‘censorship’
I shouldn't be shocked people are trying to rewrite such recent history, but it still feels weird when most people here were there watching it happen. Reddit not only bent over backwards to try and keep TD up, they went to lengths they definitely don't go to when they ban other subs. TD stayed up past numerous warnings. They even tried direct intervention to get the mods to do their work.

"It is well known the admins wanted TD banned" is a direct lie. I doubt you have better insight than anyone else about what was going on inside Reddit.

lukebitts··on The pandemic has changed the shape of global happiness
How is saying hospitals are full extraordinary? My country is going through it right now, we just had our first death from someone who could not find a hospital bed. Im sure a google search on this subject would be very easy.
lukebitts··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
> The right are not the ones cancelling people

The right is the one failling at cancelling people, but they try just as much as the left

lukebitts··on Rust's async isn't F# king colored
I feel like the core argument of the original "what color is your function" article is that you can't abstract over sync/async. You can't write `array.filter` to receive a sync or async parameter, it is either one or the other.

Has this been solved anywhere?

lukebitts··on Why asynchronous Rust doesn't work
The Rust community regards the JS community with contempt? Where does that opinion come from?
lukebitts··on Amazon Game Studios struggles to find a hit
Is it impossible for a game to be racist? If not, how do you know this instance wasn’t racist? Do you know the game better than the people working on it?

This is not people on twitter complaining, these were actual professionals who were a part of the project, I see nothing ridiculous about it.

lukebitts··on Grindr to be fined almost €10M over GDPR complaint
Why is the country relevant? The app is used globally
lukebitts··on How would websites look like if they had motion blur on scroll
Scrolling by dragging the bar seems to apply the max amount of blur even if you only move it by a pixel, but other than that I could see myself using it as a browser extension. This was a pleasant scrolling experience
lukebitts··on Raytracing won't simplify AAA real-time rendering
I think nobody is mentioning that because raytracing is already a proven technology, we just need the hardware to match. RTX (nvidia's support) is pretty gimmicky so far, since most devs are only using it for reflections, but even global reflections are a nice step forward.
lukebitts··on A Worsening Culture War
This isn't a good argument. If there is blame to be assigned it is not unthinkable that some groups are not to blame and another is.
lukebitts··on French fathers will now get 28 days of paternity leave
The first few weeks can be really difficult for parents, having both of them free of work can be beneficial for the couple and the child.
lukebitts··on An Introduction to Data Oriented Design with Rust
> I think you're getting at the idea that instead of having objects differ in their behavior by overriding methods, you have them differ by having fields bound to objects that implement different behavior.

I guess I'm more getting at the idea of changing the game design at any point by adding or removing components, a way to make it easier for devs to cope with changing requirements (and they are always changing ofc), but you are right about favoring composition over inheritance, that by itself is pretty good.

I can't really talk about "things that are often claimed" and from the way you talk about this it seems like you have come across different opinions from mine on what ECS is or its value. Sad to see such a useful pattern get "corrupted", but I suppose that is inevitable.
