lukebitts··on Ask not what the compiler can do for you
What happens? We debug and find the error exactly like we would have to if the tooling was “worse”
lukebitts··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”

Nothing so… social

By adding keywords to the prompt and to the negative prompt

lukebitts··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
No one sugested any policies at all. Maybe my fellow citizen could attend some reading comprehension classes before criticizing other citizens?
lukebitts··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Right, so the only options that exist:

1 - The police is absolute and can do anything they want, and unless you have a magical police force in your pocket you can't complain.

2 - The police doesn't exist and every city is covered in excrement and random stabbings.

There's no gaslight going on, we just don't see everything in black and white like you.

"If you can't personally and instantly fix the problem shut up!"

I wonder how the boot tastes. Probably like crack considering the arguments you are coming up with

lukebitts··on 10 Reasons Why Current Music Sucks So Hard
Imagine not only writing this list but also posting it with your full name attached… that’s courage at least
lukebitts··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
> I also believe they thought it would be more effective at making their point than it was.

I see. I suppose this is where we differ, I'm sure they don't care about making a point at all.

lukebitts··on We can't all use AI. Someone has to generate the training data
Did you really explain the concept of an insult to them? Do you really believe they did it without knowing what they were doing?
lukebitts··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you got on any aspect of life?
When I was a child in school, we had to cut a piece of paper in the shape of a flower with a hole in the middle, to put around an utensil as a gift. When I cut my flower and tried to fit it in the utensil, the hole was a bit smaller than I needed. I was ready to cut a full circle around the hole when a teacher told me “sometimes all you need is just a little bit” and she cut the smallest piece of paper and suddenly the flower fit perfectly. 30 years later I’ve followed her advice too many times to count, more than any advice I got from my parents
lukebitts··on ChatGPT: The Slickest Con Artist of All Time
What have you tried? I personally have used it for writing tests (and ideas for tests), to explain some old convoluted legacy code, to generate easy-concept functions like rect/rect collisions, rect/curve collisions, turning an in memory tree into html text, etc. All things I could do in 5 to 10 minutes, but ChatGPT does it in 5 seconds.

I've also used it to generate the floorplan of several commercial buildings, the jobs needed to keep those buildings operating, people to fill those jobs with varying ages/names/appearances and the relationships between all these people (only here things started breaking down). All this as background for a game I'm developing, this task would have taken significantly more time for me to do manually.

lukebitts··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
My interface with code is definitely not my eyes. My interface with code is the mental structures I keep in my mind while coding. Rust is perfectly legible, even better than legible, because all the structures in my mind can be simpler since the language guarantees so much on its own. Something as superficial as wether the language uses :: or whatever doesn’t even register while I’m programming.

Also, that was a nonsense metaphor for you to use. The grip being slippery is so far removed from “beauty” that not even trying to change the subject to be about “interfacing” can redeem it.

C++ is a slippery hammer, not because it’s ugly, but because it’s easy to hit yourself in the foot using it.

lukebitts··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
I care about how nice my tools are as well, but notice "nice" implies usefulness. Beauty? beauty is irrelevant, and it is irrelevant in many human endeavors where it is not treated as such.
lukebitts··on Rust's Ugly Syntax
I find caring about a language being “ugly” such a weird concept. Like, imagine caring that a hammer is pretty or not… All I care about is how well it can hammer my nails and that’s literally it.
lukebitts··on GPT is all you need for the back end
So the same as my programs then
lukebitts··on Tell HN: I'm scared of sharing my opinion online
Fair enough, though I would argue it’s impossible to have a healthy meaningful debate on “the internet” (by which I mean reddit or any social media)
lukebitts··on Tell HN: I'm scared of sharing my opinion online
I personally don’t get anything out of sharing my opinion on the internet, I do it out of reflex and I actually have been taking measures to stop doing it. So no, not asking in bad faith.
lukebitts··on Tell HN: I'm scared of sharing my opinion online
> Are we seriously questioning why someone wants to share their opinions on a topic? Are we actually clueless as to what they get out of it?

Yes, feel free to explain why that’s insane. It seems absolutely normal to keep things to yourself

lukebitts··on Tell HN: I'm scared of sharing my opinion online
Would simply not posting your opinions online be a solution? I keep my controversial opinions to my close group of friends and from what I gather they do the same
lukebitts··on Men Without Work (2016)
By your own admission you chose work instead of raising your own children. Why is that different?
lukebitts··on The top 1% was the only group to see real wage gains from 2020 to 2021
No, when they ask for 20% raise you tell then that's peanuts and increase it to 100%
lukebitts··on Ink – Inkle's narrative scripting language
I’ve been using Ink for a personal project for the past 6 months, and it’s amazing in what it enables. But there are just so many small things I wish it supported, actual lists for one. Having to use external functions and recursion is annoying, but it also shows there’s not a lot of commitment to Ink being a “normal” programming language. Also classes, there are so many concepts that are better expressed as classes. Maybe even actual scopes instead of just two levels. Also arguments that don’t take up space in the global naming scope. Just a bunch of things we usually take for granted in programming languages.
lukebitts··on WebGL Water
Clearly I’m talking about the technical aspects of the demos. Not a lot to discuss if you think one is prettier than the other
lukebitts··on WebGL Water
What’s more impressive about it? Two static lights and some normals maps, compared to caustics, wave simulation and physics. One of these is much harder than the other, in realtime no less
lukebitts··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
Questioning people's motives is always a boring endeavor. You don't actually know that's the reason, why not respond to the arguments that were made?
lukebitts··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
You don't know what you talking about if you think the mod team is "petulant preteens" and not professionals who have moved the language forward in leaps and bounds.
lukebitts··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
As someone mentioned in another comment, BurntSushi is an amazing engineer who has contributed immensely to the ecosystem, on top of being a moderator. Don't turn this into some dumb "non-technical people stirring up trouble".
lukebitts··on As teens left Facebook, it planned to target 6-year-olds, documents show
