luka-birsa··on Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
I sledom access windows based computers, but when I do, I'm always suprised how my perception of windows is skewed by media and internet trolls.

I find the choices they made quite acceptable and the windows 8(.1) as a very good OS for end user.

luka-birsa··on Show HN: Trontium Reactor, the first USB Power Delivery battery
Sure, there was a reason to do a project which: "Because of its high cost and because of his unsatisfactory, short operation he is widely regarded as the greatest technical debacle in post-war Germany." (from the link).

Not saying the engineers are all monkeys, but this specific project was a complete failure and yes, there are countless better ways to develop a Thorium reactor (see LFTR et all).

luka-birsa··on Show HN: Trontium Reactor, the first USB Power Delivery battery
I always find it amusing when links provided by "nay sayers" present contrary evidence or no evidence at all.

From the link: The nuclear power plant THTR-300 ( thorium high-temperature reactor) was a helium-cooled high-temperature reactor of the type pebble bed reactor in North Rhine-Westphalia Hamm with an electrical output of 300 megawatts . Despite its designation as a thorium reactor , it was essentially a normal on uranium fission ( 235 U) based reactor: While there was his nuclear fuel to 90 per cent of thorium, but this was holds less than 30 percent of its energy. Because of its high cost and because of his unsatisfactory, short operation he is widely regarded as the greatest technical debacle in post-war Germany.

The reactor was in fact a URANIUM REACTOR!

I still need to see relevant proof that Thorium technology failed for any other reason than good sales and marketing from the Uranium camp.

luka-birsa··on Ask HN: Will soon have lots of time and little money – how to spend it?
Suggestion to eat cheap carbos is insane. Sure its cheap, but it will also raise your blood sugar, make you feel without energy and make you obese.

Considering that I've been practicing diets without any carbs for a while now, I can say that:

1. They aren't much more expensive if you plan ahead. You need to buy in bulk and refrigirate at home. 2. You do get added benefits of canceling any drinks with carbs, which means no juices and beer and much less carbonated stuff (all you can do needs to be sugar less). 3. You should feel better across the day. I always got super tired after eating rice or pasta (especially the simplest, white stuff, full grain is usually better but not much).

If you need a very good crash course on what to do, read the 4-hour body from Tim Ferriss. That's a nice starter for people trying to change their lifestyle.

BTW: Since I reduced/removed carbs from my diet I lost 10-15% of body weight, am much less tired/sleepy and can perform better mentally. I also eat less without even trying, overeating is very hard + regardless of the fact that I eat at least two eggs daily + insane quantities of fatty foods (ribs, suckling pig, bacon, butter) my bloodwork (including holesterol) improved.

It doesn't run Linux - the devices themsleves run as a thin-clients, that connect to a server. The server converts webpages into data and streams them to the device.

The server is running vanilla Ubuntu with Visionect Packages.

luka-birsa··on Show HN: Node.js, Twitter, Instagram-powered e-paper picture frame
That's exactly how we went about it. We could do a full Instagram integration, but we never used IFTTT and it saved us some coding + kept the example codebase much simpler.

IFTTT does have downsides tho, very slow to push from Instagram to Twitter.

I'd so love to work on nuclear energy, making Thorium approchable for the masses.

Checklist: - find a superstar physics team - get 0.5B in funding.

Seriously, Thorium rocks. Look it up.

luka-birsa··on KitKat giving you battery drain problems? Uninstall Skype, says Google
Test 1. Phone charged at 8AM. KitKat + Skype + other apps (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Evernote, 4SQ) + normal usage = Phone dead at 10PM same day.

Test 2. Phone charged at 8AM. KitKat + other apps (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Evernote, 4SQ) + normal usage = Next day at 8AM, phone at ~ 50%.

Sure, Skype is not causing the issue (it is limited to Android tho).

luka-birsa··on KitKat giving you battery drain problems? Uninstall Skype, says Google
Regardless of what it looks like when Google puts down a IM competitor, but as a KitKat user I can confirm this.

Nexus 5 + Skype (with 0 actual skyping done) = 16hrs autonomy. I almost RMAed the phone.

Nexus 5 sans Skype = after 24hrs I still had 50% battery.

Don't belive me? Try it on your KitKat device!

Similar to what the US is doing in terms of mobile market, thinking that they are somehow representative or "advanced".

We get millions of headlines for Apple launching video chat in the US market while they had that in EU 5 and in JP 7 years back.

At the risk of sounding overly condecending, if there is something that "ze Americans" do great is selling their supremacy (ie. we are the best).

BTW: Thats a good thing as they tend to fake it till they make it.

It's really hard to understand why somebody would over report Apple share. I guess it's some kind of Apple fanship. Anyways, these are the real numbers (World wide):

True, didn't think of that.
luka-birsa··on TrackR
This is much worse than GSM+GPS as:

1. Literally works for years compared to days. 2. Much smaller. 3. Works everywhere where people carry their phones (underground substructures impenetrable by GPS and GSM).

luka-birsa··on Show HN: A home environment sensor from a Raspberry Pi and an e-paper device
Not sure about that. Perhaps not sold at a loss in terms of bill of materials right now (since they have been in production for some time they probably brought the price down), but that doesn't account for the labor costs (developers, support, etc...).

All e-book readers are subsuidized by book sales. Amazon would be mad not to do it that way. They are a goods company not a hardware company.

luka-birsa··on TrackR
This is not like carrying a passport, phone or computer at all.

I can be tracked without my knowledge - somebody just needs to plant a minature tracker in my laptop bag.

Edit: The issue is that everybody tracks everybody, not like with Tile or Chipolo - where you only track your own tags with your own smartphone (ie: you need to be near your tagged items to track them, which makes covert location tracking of persons hard).

luka-birsa··on TrackR
Want to track a human? Just plant a tag in their purse/on their car.

So much abuse. I hope there is some legislation out there that prevents such devices.

I am quite certain that they are not allowed to retroactively change the ToS and access the data legaly.

That doesn't mean that they won't. Perhaps they will just do it behind the curtains, offering better Facebook Friend links.

luka-birsa··on Flexcoin is shutting down
What I find interesting is that BTC market does not care about Flexcoin shutting down - prices continue to soar to USD 700 after the MtGox induced drop to ~ USD 500.

For me this actually shows promise of real market stabillity in the long run. Image what would happen if a real bank failed in a normal country. Or image what would happen to USD if the largest world bank would fail (destroying 12% of worldwide supply of USD) and nobody would bail them out? Would the drop be worse than 10-20%?
