lugao··on Airflow – Stream media files directly from macOS to AirPlay devices
Really solid program. I bought a license years ago because it is the only software that correctly remuxes media for direct play in Chromecast, including surround sound and HDR.

I wish Jellyfin could catch-up with the compatibility level AirFlow has to offer.

lugao··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
There seem to be a latch mechanism to keep it attatched. I would be surprised if it was designed to rely solely on magnets.
lugao··on Conversational Game Theory
Exactly! And it was obviouslly written by (or with help of) a LLM. The first definition is even gramatically incorrect! Lets see what gemini thinks of the first paragraph if I force it to criticize it:

lugao··on Hetzner introduces GPU server for AI training
> next gen flagship at around 1k

Have you seen GPU prices lately (last 5 years)? A RTX 4080 super with merely 16 GB of VRAM is at least 1k, there's no way a 32 GB next gen flagship would be released at this price range.

lugao··on Dawarich: Self-hosted alternative to Google Location History
Could not import my 10 year + google history hosting it in my raspberypi 5. The number of pending tasks was over 2 million after one day. I guess it was not optimized for large imports, sadly :(
lugao··on AMA: I'm Dave Greene, an accidental expert on Conway's Game of Life
What's your take on continuous life? SmoothLife, Lenia and Bert Wang-Chak Chan work in general?
lugao··on How I'm able to take notes in mathematics lectures using LaTeX and Vim (2019)
Awesome write-up! I wonder how much simpler and/or unnecessary some of the snippets would be by using typst.app instead of latex. The figure creation pipeline is also great, in this case a custom plugin for typst would need to be added to inkscape.
lugao··on LaTeX3: Programming in LaTeX with Ease (2020)
I've utilized it to craft a number of high-school level mathematics and physics problems and solutions, and the experience was genuinely pleasing. The scripting language brings a fresh perspective to the markup language, while the plugin ecosystem is steadily expanding and improving.

Though I don't have firsthand experience in formatting documents to meet publication standards, the flexibility it offers seems promising for such applications.

My sincere hope is that it garners the recognition it truly deserves, and that significant publications in the future will embrace it, rolling out official templates directly in typst.

lugao··on Polynomial interpolation
I will probably get down voted here, but in my perspective the author bitterness towards mathematics ends up doing the opposite of his supposed objective of "demystifying" the subject. It pushes "hackers" and "maths" even further apart.
lugao··on What does $0=$2 in awk do?
As others here pointed out: this is bad awk.

I think good awk scripts lie somewhere between "This is atrociously overfit to this file" and "this is so general you should have done it in python/perl/etc".

Of course there are legitimate uses for both super-specific and super-general awk scripts, but finding the right compromise is what makes a good awk script. You want your script to be concise yet robust to changes in the input files. Also, readability and maintainability are really important if you plan to add it to an important script.

Short awk != good awk.

lugao··on $34M permanently locked into AkuDreams contract forever due to bad code
You could at the very least model impossible states and check they won't happen. The assumptions are not that hard to model either, there are not that many moving parts.
lugao··on $34M permanently locked into AkuDreams contract forever due to bad code
The academy have developed tools for code verification, state modeling and formal proofs. The choice of using a javascript fork for financial contracts is deliberately dumb and will result in the craziest bugs we could imagine.
