ludjer··on Dutch watchdog finds Apple App Store payment rules anti-competitive
> Apple is traditionally very pro-Consumer

They are only pro consumer when it makes them more money.

ludjer··on Show HN: We built an end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos
The moms and kids dropping 1000$ on candy crush every month are not going to switch off apple. The big spenders in apples echo system are not the tech literate. The tech literate normally cost way more to maintained from a client perspective. Also they are allot more concerned over costs with regards to space as seen by allot of comments on this page talking about how expensive storage is.
ludjer··on Show HN: We built an end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos
For the privacy centered people Synology has a nas that does all of this and more.
ludjer··on I am often asked if I will “return to cryptocurrency”
This is my biggest problem for crypto. For us power users we are fine but for the average joe and my parents I would never let them hold their own keys. You here every day people getting scammed and hacked now imagine if they could lose all their life savings because they where not 100% tech savvy.
ludjer··on Show HN: Loqbooq – A decision log with Slack integration
I would suggest lower per user pricing but have a higher minimum number of users and have a free tier for single users.
ludjer··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Photos?
Are there any plans to add search and automatic image tagging ?
ludjer··on Slack is down
IRC is easy to migrate from since there is nothing to migrate other then chat history. IRC is also missing so many features that slack provides out the box. And a law like that would not work since you would need to write complicated transformation scripts to transform between services. Also not all services are a 1-1 mapping. I like IRC but it has its limitations. That is why slack succeeded where IRC did not.
ludjer··on Multi-screening may mess with your memory
This sounds like it is talking about people using a phone and watching TV at the same time. Not using multiple monitors at work as the title lead me to think.
ludjer··on Abusing Teams client protocol to bypass Teams security policies
Yip I am struggling to see where the security risk is. If the policies are still applied server side(I am assuming this is the case since they did not demo server side vulnerabilities). Then all you are doing is getting to a part of the UI that has no functionality. The same can be done with many other UI's by editing the local configuration.
ludjer··on Ontario police used Covid-19 database illegally, civil rights groups find
This is not a contact tracing app this was a medical history Database. The Canadian contact tracing app is anonymized and open source.
ludjer··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I originally was also on Godaddy, but now I moved to Porkbun and never look back. Love their website and their name.
ludjer··on AWS CodeArtifact: A fully managed software artifact repository service
Thanks for letting me know, I will reach out to the HN email and ask them why. I suspect it is because of some comments where I got -Karma.
ludjer··on AWS CodeArtifact: A fully managed software artifact repository service
Considering the price of Nexus and Artifactory this is way cheaper for a SAAS offering with SLA's. I imagine Artifactory is really going to have to up their product offering or at least lower their entry prices.
ludjer··on Generating a Java program with 90% less code
That is more integration tests. Unit tests should target logic more then dependencies/integration.
ludjer··on Generating a Java program with 90% less code
You do know you can mock out concrete classes aswell. You do not need a interface.
ludjer··on How Is NordVPN Unblocking Disney+?
IF you are going to try look for open ports they certainly wont be using the standard ports. You will need to do a full scan "nmap -p". But doing that is considered malicious and you can be sued. So I would advise against scanning random hosts that you do not have permission to scan.
ludjer··on How Is NordVPN Unblocking Disney+?
If you only use HTTPS they can track your DNS queries but they cant track anything other then that. When you do a google for something so let us say google.com?search=searchTerm they see a dns lookup for google.com. They will not see ?search=searchTerm or anything else. They will see a connection open between your computer and another IP after that. In the future that will stop becoming a problem because there will be DNS over TLS or DNS over HTTPS which will even hide your DNS lookups. Which means all the ISP will see is you made a TCP connection to X. Theoretically they could just do a reverse lookup for that IP but that is not always easy.
ludjer··on Bayard: a full-text search and indexing server written in Rust
where is Java in the list :D
ludjer··on Ask HN: What reasons do you have for not moving to the cloud?
- High single instance reliability. I have ~1000 EC2 instances; every week I get a notification how an instance has been restarted to move it off failing hardware. I never got these in my DC

- Consistent large scale workloads at low latency. Nothing beats low latency then bare-metal servers. Also, it costs significantly cheaper running large clusters on bare-metal then in the cloud. If you move to the cloud, you need to use the cloud services else your costs are astronomically higher.

- If you already have datacenters that have been paid off why move to the cloud. Use your own data centers and run a hybrid cloud.

I think there is a reason allot of big tech companies roll their own cloud or do some kind of hybrid approach. Whe nyou running a app that is core to your infrastructure you do not want to rely on another persons hardware you want 100% control of everything. I have had route 53 cause issues, S3 cause issues, EC2 servers get stuck and there is nothing you can do but wait 15 min for the enterprise SLA of AWS. In a business critical system, 15 min is not good enough. You need your operations techie to be sprinting to the rack to hit the reset button. Just my experience.

ludjer··on Google Chrome Incognito Mode Can Still Be Detected
Well the fact that he uses WGET on a remote server means that its a static ip in a DC most probably. Which means its allot easier to track him. Also considering the amount of pages i go through i would rather have no internet then have to wait for a email for ever page i want to use. Then also half the pages wont work because of no JS.
ludjer··on JP Morgan rolls out first US bank-backed cryptocurrency to transform paymentsd
Having worked with existing solutions in a top 4 bank in my country I would rather be a beggar then work with those systems. The banking system needs change and needs it badly, they are so far behind the rest of the industry. Blockchain is still way more decentralized then current solutions which mainly work on a Master/Slave HA mode.
ludjer··on Bitcoin-Rigging Criminal Probe Focused on Tie to Tether
No one said you will get prosecuted, they are saying organisations that facilitated conversions between crypto and USD will be investigated.
ludjer··on Up to Two-Thirds of Bitcoin Transactions Have No Economic Value
Very inaccurate, 95% of the requests would have cached those js files firstly, and secondly that is so mislead-ed its not even funny. they took the average cost of a DC and equipment in and and then added all Known dcs together to get to a magical number and say the only purpose of those DC's are to serve the internet. That paper is so inaccurate. The power cost of delivering 3 MB extra is minuscule on 99% of the networks. Only a hand full of people who use satellite only connectivity would suffer from 3 MB of extra data.
ludjer··on Why Searching Through 500M Pwned Passwords Is So Quick
I pay 30 USD for 16 gig ram 6 TB hdd and high end I7. Its cheaper then buying the hardware and running it at my home. EC would cost me 130$ just for the instance excluding the 6TB space. So far my server has more then 1000 days uptime 0 problems. Also if you have 1 instance in a cloud or 1 instance on a dedi you should still have backup plans in place. Cloud is good for variable load, defenitly not for constant load. Also you get dedi's with san storage if all you care about is storage.
ludjer··on Google Critic Ousted from Think Tank Funded by the Tech Giant
They wont need to add cookies or anything like that. They can track you just by parsing the connection logs on their routers and switches. Also every thing that is billable is logged. So technically they are already tracking and recording every access across their network. It is impossible to verify if they actually do this without anyone leaking information that worked on the system.
ludjer··on The Gender Pay Gap Is Largely Because of Motherhood
Where we work we also have rules about working over time but when deliveries come we can if we want to, and even more then the limit set by HR. We then give it to our boss who writes it down in a book and we can take special work leave later when the stress is down. No one finds out. Always ways around things.
ludjer··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
If you are in public you are being looked at I do not understand your logic. When you go in a public place there are already public accessible web cams that people use to track this kind of thing i remember a thesis that used public accessible cams to try and track people and build up a database. I have always had the opinion you lose privacy when you leave your house since you are in public, and public like is opposite of private/privacy so to me it makes sense.
ludjer··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
It saddens me that people are complaining about this yet people are doing way worse in our profession like extorting business for money through ransom-ware, hacking personal information and bank accounts, creating robots that kill people. But no people are worried that while walking around in public place a picture is taken of them and an add is changed to target them.
ludjer··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
How is this disturbing? its just like some a public webcam that gets used to identify people. If it is in the public you have no privacy. If you want privacy go home as soon as you are out of your house you lose your privacy. I am a big voter for privacy in your home and private but out in the public your are not private anymore and therefore privacy falls away. Privacy and private kinda go hand in hand. you cant have privacy in a public space it is impossible.
ludjer··on Access Now and EFF Condemn the Arrest of Tor Node Operator Dmitry Bogatov
wont change the fact that the originating IP is still the exit node. If you use tor and spam some https website the source IP will still be the exit nodes IP. Secure protocols cant hide the source IP(which is way more complicated, requires compromised router for a man in the middle attack, if TCP)
